PSYCHOEMOTIONAL STATUS AND HEART RATE VARIABILITY IN ADOLESCENTS IN THE NORTH

Specific extreme climatic conditions of the North can cause long-term psychoemotional stress, causing violations of the state of adaptive mechanisms of the body and the formation of psychosomatic diseases. Adolescence, due to specific changes in the body, is most susceptible to various stressful factors. The purpose of this work was to study the psychoemotional state and features of the regulatory mechanisms of the body of adolescents living in the North, depending on gender. A study of the level of neuroticism (H) according to G. Eysenck, situational (ST) and personal anxiety (LT) according to Spielberger, analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) using the hardware and software complex "VNS-Spectrum" (LLC "Neuro-Soft", Russia, Ivanovo) in adolescents (n = 58; 30 girls, 28 boys), permanently residing in the city of Yakutsk. Statistical data processing was performed using the program Statistica 13 for Windows. The differences were considered statistically significant at p<0.05. The results show that more than 40% of adolescents (40% - girls, 43% - boys) permanently residing in Yakutsk have a high level of neuroticism, which is significantly higher than in adolescents in Central Russia. Gender differences were revealed in the study of CT and LT. In girls, a high level of CT is detected in 31% of individuals, and a high level of LT is detected in 44%. The values of CT and LT in girls correspond to the average values (40.31±1.85 and 44.06±1.37 points, respectively). Boys have a higher number of individuals with high levels of CT (43%) and LT (54%) than girls. The average CT values are 41.42±1.95 points. Average LT values in boys (45.42±1.56 points), which corresponds to a high level of anxiety. The high level of LT in boys strongly correlates (r = 0.81) with the tension of the mechanisms of regulation of heart activity with the involvement of the suprasegmental Central loop of regulation, which indicates a high level of psychoemotional tension in more than 50% of adolescent boys living in Yakutia.

Mechanisms of regulation of cardiac rhythm have many individual features, which are conditioned by age, sex, training of the organism, strength and nature of external influence, constitutional features of the organism. The purpose of the work is to determine the relationship between cardiointervalographic indices and parameters of the external structure of the body in highly skilled wrestlers of the mesomorphic somatotype. The study involved 24 wrestlers between the ages of 17 and 21 with a high level of sportsmanship and more than 3 years of experience. All of the wrestlers were of medium weight and engaged in free and Greco-Roman wrestling. We conducted a study of heart rate variability on the cardiac computer diagnostic complex “OPTW” following the recommendations of the European and North American Cardiac Association (1996). The indices of vegetative homeostasis according to Bayevsky, variational heart rate, statistical and spectral cardiointervalographic indicators were determined. Anthropometry was performed according to the method of V.V. Bunak (1941), somatotypological study – by the calculated modification of the Heath-Carter method (1990), determination of the component composition of body weight by the method of Matejko (1992). In the package “STATISTICA 5.5” correlation analysis was performed using the nonparametric Spearman statistical method. It was found that in the wrestlers of the mesomorphic somatotype, the variations of the pulsometry had the highest number and strength of reliable correlations with constitutional parameters, most of which were inverse of the mean force. All statistical indicators of heart rate variability with indicators of the external structure of the body had only inverse significant correlations. The least significant correlations were found for spectral indices and parameters of vegetative homeostasis. According to the results of the correlation analysis in the wrestlers of the mesomorphic somatotype, we can assume that with the increase of total, longitudinal, circumferential, transverse body sizes and muscle and bone mass, the variability of the heart rhythm of the sympathetic department of the autonomic nervous system will be more pronounced.

The topic of sports, physical fitness and adaptive abilities of a person to the influence of physical activity of different intensity has become highly relevant in recent years. The aim of the work is to establish correlations between the indicators of heart rate variability and parameters of the external structure of the body in young athletes of mesomorphic somatotype. The study involved 29 athletes between the ages of 17 and 21 with a high level of sportsmanship and more than 3 years of experience. All athletes had a track and field athletic load with maximum (100 m, 200 m and 110 m hurdles) and submaximal (running on 400 m and 800 m) work intensity. We conducted a study of heart rate variability on the cardiac computer diagnostic complex “OPTW” following the recommendations of the European and North American Cardiac Association (1996). Variable heart rate, statistical and spectral cardiointervalographic indices were determined. Anthropometry was performed by the Bunak method (1941), somatotypological study – by the calculated modification of the Heath-Carter method (1990), determination of the component composition of body weight by the method of Matejko (1921). In the package “STATISTICA 5.5” correlation analysis was performed using the nonparametric Spearman statistical method. Cardiointervalographic findings were found to be statistically significantly correlated with a small number of body sizes and somatotype components and body weights in adolescent athletes belonging to the mesomorphic somatotype. Indicators of variational heart rate did not have numerous reliable and unreliable relationships of average strength with somatic parameters. The data of correlation analysis of indices of variational pulsometry showed that in athletes with increase in width and thickness of the torso and decrease in the circumference of the shin and chest was more pronounced sympathicotonia, and with the reduction of fat component increased the influence on the heart of the parasympathetic system. Statistical indicators of heart rate variability with constitutional parameters had significant inverse correlations of mean power. Among all statistical indicators of heart rate variability, the PNN50 had the strongest and most significant correlations with anthropometric dimensions. The least significant correlations with constitutional characteristics in mesomorphic athletes had spectral indices related to skin-fat thickness, trunk diameters, and lower limb segment circumferences.

AbstractThe vagus nerve is the largest autonomic nerve, innervating nearly every organ in the body. “Vagal tone” is a clinical measure believed to indicate overall levels of vagal activity, but is measured indirectly through the heart rate variability (HRV). Abnormal HRV has been associated with many severe conditions such as diabetes, heart failure, and hypertension. However, vagal tone has never been directly measured, leading to disagreements in its interpretation and influencing the effectiveness of vagal therapies. Using custom carbon nanotube yarn electrodes, we were able to chronically record neural activity from the left cervical vagus in both anesthetized and non-anesthetized rats. Here we show that tonic vagal activity does not correlate with common HRV metrics with or without anesthesia. Although we found that average vagal activity is increased during inspiration compared to expiration, this respiratory-linked signal was not correlated with HRV either. These results represent a clear advance in neural recording technology but also point to the need for a re-interpretation of the link between HRV and “vagal tone”.

Natural and climatic conditions of the environment of Northeast Russia and particularly Magadan region are the very factor mostly influencing adaptive responses by individuals inhabiting the region. Compensatory and adaptive responses in indigenes and newcomers of the region can be assumed to have their specific features. In 2009 there was executed the examination of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and gas exchange in 392 cases aged of 17-19 years, including Europeans (Caucasians) born in the North in the 1st-2nd generation and indigenes. The methodologically similar study was carried out in 2014 in 265 persons, referred to the same cohorts of North-born Caucasians and Indigenes from the Magadan region. The results of the study executed in 2009 testified to a small number of physiological parameters that were reliably different in Caucasians vs. Indigene subjects. In 2014 no difference was found between the two examined cohorts throughout the observed parameters. The revealed changes in gas exchange, external respiration and cardiovascular systems demonstrated by modern young Indigenes of Northeast Russia testified to the fall in the effectiveness of their breathing. All that makes them farther from the classic “polar metabolic type” and their morphofunctional status becomes closer to European male subjects of Northeast Russia. Thus, we can observe a clear tendency towards “convergence in programs” of the adaptive changes between populations of the North residents undergoing similar natural, environmental and social factors.

An indicators analysis of the first-graders functional state and vegetative homeostasis obtained in the initial period of adaptation to the educational environment revealed gender differences in the rates of the adaptation process to new learning conditions. It has been established that girls’ adaptation mechanisms turn on earlier than boys’, with their similar orientation. The article provides an experimental justification of the indicators use legitimacy for heart rate variability to assess the functional state of the body in the acute period of adaptation to the educational environment. The importance of teacher physiological literacy for the optimization of the educational process is substantiated. The results of the study are convincing evidence of the knowledge importance for the physiological foundations of the occurrence and course of physiological and mental processes, stable individual psycho-physiological characteristics for the organization of the learning environment, corresponding to the functional capabilities of the body. This argument is also confirmed by many years of experience among master students key competencies development, which allow using such an objective criterion as the current functional state of the body to ensure, through the joint efforts of parents, teachers, psychologists, and doctors, the correction of the educational environment and psycho-physiological resistance of individual to it. The established differences in the dynamics of heart rate variability indicators for girls and boys can be used to form a health-saving program in school settings.

Modern games consists of digital gaming consoles that involves interaction with a user and has an interface to generate visual feedback through 2D/3D monitor. These games have several psychological side effects like loss of spatial awareness, back pains, insomnia, addiction, aggression, stress, and hypertension. Virtual reality (VR) Gaming is one of the most emerging and novel technologies in the field of entertainment. Evaluation of this new technology has become important in order to analyze the effects of its predecessors (2D and 3D gaming). The main focus of this paper is on detection of stress levels in individuals due to VR gaming and classify them depending on their sympathetic and parasympathetic dominance. In this paper we obtain the response of an individual during VR gaming and correlate them with the HRV/PTT parameters. The game chosen for the data acquisition was ‘VR city view rope crossing-360 android VR,’ during which data recording is done. It was found that there was a quantitative increase in physiological stress when individuals were exposed to virtual high heights in comparison with time relative to unaltered viewing. Mean Heart rate showed a significant increase during gaming for both boys and girls which indicates that the body is under the influence of a sympathetic activity like a physical exercise.

Background. The specificity of acupuncture points (acupoints) is one of the key concepts in traditional acupuncture theory, but the question of whether there is adequate scientific evidence to prove or disprove specificity has been vigorously debated in recent years. Acupoint laterality is an important aspect of acupoint specificity. Data is particularly scarce regarding the laterality of the same channel, namesake acupoint located on opposite sides of the body. Our previous study results suggest that Neiguan acupoint (PC6) has the laterality. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Hegu (LI4) also has laterality from the perspective of heart rate variability.Methods. A total of twenty-eight healthy female volunteers were recruited for this study and were randomly separated into the group I (n=14) and the group II (n=14) according to the register order. In the group I, left LI4 was stimulated in the first epoch and the right LI4 was stimulated in the second epoch. In the group II, right LI4 was stimulated in the first epoch and left LI4 was stimulated in the second epoch. Electrocardiogram was recorded and heart rate variability was analyzed.Results. The results show that there were no significant differences of heart rate variablity between the group I and the group II in the time domain and in the frequency domain.Conclusions. Bilateral Hegu acupoints have the same effect on the heart rate variability of the healthy subjects.

Physicians in traditional Chinese medicine have found that acupoints and meridians have effects on specific parts of the body. The aim of this study was to see how acupressure at distal acupuncture points of a specific meridian affects heart rate variability (HRV) and oxygenation of the trapezius muscle. Forty-one female participants were randomly allocated to three groups. Subjects in the Stomach Meridian acupuncture point (ST) group received acupressure at ST 34, ST 36, and ST 41, subjects in the Large Intestinal Meridian acupuncture point (LI) group received acupressure at LI 4, LI 10, and LI 11, and subjects in the control group did not receive any stimuli. HRV and oxygenation of the trapezius muscles were measured. The high frequency components of HRV in the control and LI groups tended to be higher than those in the ST group. Total hemoglobin in the control and LI groups eventually reached significantly higher levels than in the ST group. While oxyhemoglobin (ΔO2Hb) in the control and LI groups did not change, ΔO2Hb in the ST significantly decreased temporarily.
