The article presented is a qualitative analysis of the early education Freinet and Montessori teachers in relation to their educational practices in the scope of educational constructivism. Understanding constructivism as a metaphor describing process of learning, the authors outline similarities and differences in the conceptions attributed to the processes of learning between the two researched groups of teachers. The results of the analysis show the opposite “direction” of the thematizations. Freinet teachers concentrate on the techniques and then – in their narratives – outline the values related to education whereas Montessori teachers’ narratives are oriented at values and only illustrated with some technological examples. The outcomes of the analysis can be formulated in a form of provisional synthesis: The realization of constructivism in education is not connected so much with so called “active learning techniques” but rather with values, individual and shared axio-educational orientations and the quality of relations between various subjects involved in education. Such a hypothesis leads to the questioning of the tendency according to which teachers’ education should be practical. On the contrary, we claim that such a conception on teachers’ education might be an obstacle to the wide implementation of constructivism in educational practices.

This paper shares a summary of the self-reported concerns of 134 first-year engineering students around engagement in online active learning environments during COVID-19. The students had volunteered to participate in remote weekly problem-solving workshops for four weeks that utilized Active Learning techniques. In this paper, we specifically analyze samples from the students who participated in only one workshop and responded to the following question: What concerns do you have that might limit your ability to engage in online active learning environments? Twenty of the participants reported no concerns. The tone of each student's response and personal feelings reported were also analyzed. Then, a thematic analysis of each student response was made, with the transcription and coding agreement being performed by two coders. As expected, most of the students expressed their concerns in a negative or neutral tone, and only a few expressed an affinity for current educational settings. Word mining of feeling terms shows that more students had verbalized being disengaged, followed by distracted and uncomfortable and none communicated a positive feeling. Our thematic analysis showed that learning socially (72/114, or 63%) is the most pressing concern for the students, followed by more personal regulating factors such as attitude and motivation (44%), quality of physical and virtual study environment (40%), as well as the guidance received from the course administrators (24%). Findings suggest the need for developing a global understanding of what active learning in an online environment entails in the context of engineering education, and to develop and adjust tools and practices to help students learn in this new context.

Abstract The Diverse Elders Coalition, in partnership with its six member organizations and the Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging, completed a national survey of 840 family and friend caregivers from diverse racial, ethnic, and sexual orientation communities to understand their unique caregiving issues and challenges. Data from a subsample of 369 caregivers identifying as Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Southeast Asian or multiple ethnicities were analyzed to understand similarities and differences between caregivers born in the US and who immigrated to the US. The Stress Process Conceptual Model guided selection of characteristics used for comparative analysis. Results of logistic regression revealed that caregivers born in the US were younger (B=-.08, p<.001), had higher educational degrees (B=.42, p<.001), and higher incomes (B=.34, p=.002). They assisted care receivers with more health-related tasks (B=.27, p=.013), but fewer culture-related tasks (B=-.51, p=.002); reported higher levels of strain in their relationship with care receivers (B=.66, p=.038); and were less satisfied with the quality of care receivers’ healthcare (B=-.62, p=.042). In terms of reasons for being a caregiver, there were no significant differences in cultural commitment to caring for older family members, however those born in the US were more likely to report providing care because it was more convenient for them than for other family and friends (B=.99, p=.002). Understanding the needs of diverse caregivers has implications for healthcare and service providers, such as providing training on diverse needs. Additionally, the differences between US born and immigrant caregivers highlights implications on the dynamic between caregivers and their care receiver.

It is in such areas that the active learning methodologies come to light. These methodologies can be used to ensure the quality of teaching of Administration. The active methodology is based on the fact that the student has the ability to solve problems resulted from essential activities in the context where it is inserted when they use “real or simulated experiences”. In this paper we report two strategies that can be used by teachers in higher education for the promotion of activities in active learning environments, both in the classrooms and outside them. This study has a qualitative approach and its objectives can be characterized as exploratory-descriptive; the technical procedures are classified as bibliographic and documentary and the results interpretation is described as an interpretative discourse analysis. It is hoped that it will be an opportunity for discussion of new directions to be given to higher education in Brazil, which has accordingly to studies been increasingly forced to ensure full quality of education. Keywords: Active learning methodologies. This study covers the main concepts of international marketing and relationship marketing to understand the role played by culture and the quality of cooperation relations between Portuguese exporting companies and their distributors in Angola. The aim of this research is to understand how the culture and the quality of the relations affect the established cooperation between companies, in the context of the internationalization of the business. It should be emphasized that relationships characterized by trust and commitment in international contexts have been sparsely studied, as well as the impact of cultural similarities and differences in relationship structures. In methodological terms, we opted for a qualitative analysis: five case studies of Portuguese exporting companies and five case studies of Angolan distributors were analyzed. Interviews were conducted with the managers of the Portuguese exporting companies and with the collaborators responsible for export activities, as well as with the Angolan distributors, to obtain answers to the research questions. The selection of Portuguese companies was based on a list of the fifty largest Portuguese exporting companies to Angola, made available by the Portuguese Investment and Foreign Trade Agency, EPE (AICEP), in August 2011. The results show that culture, trust and commitment have an impact on the cooperation of commercial relations between Portuguese exporting companies and their Angolan distributors.

The research is conducted on the material of phraseological expressions of communicative nature - proverbs and sayings of Kyrgyz, Turkish and Russian languages, which will be subjected to comparative analysis in order to identify similarities and differences in the perception of the world, the definition of national character, national and cultural values of these ethnic groups. Proverbs and sayings are extremely brief, they do not give a detailed image of life. But only one statement or phrase built n well-aimed figurative forms, expresses a general opinion about this or that phenomenon of life. Comparative analysis of phraseological units in different languages revealed similarities and differences in the perception of the world by their representatives: Kyrgyz, Turks and Russians. The number and quality of phraseological expressions, reflecting a positive or negative assessment of the concepts presented for analysis, can be considered as an indicator of accepted in society ethical norms of behavior, the rules of social life, the attitude of the ethnic group through its culture and language to the world.

Academic libraries have experienced growing demand for 24/7 access to resources and services. Despite the challenges and costs of chat reference service and consortia, many libraries are finding the demand for these services worth the cost. One key challenge is providing and measuring quality of service, particularly in a consortia setting. This study explores the quality of service provided in one academic library participating in a 24/7 chat reference consortium, by assessing transcripts of chat sessions using in-house reference quality standards. Findings point to both similarities and differences between chat interactions of local librarians versus consortia staff.

The dialogue around preschool educators has increased as concerns about the quality of early education have been raised across the world. This paper contributes to a novel historical and contemporary understanding of the professionalisation of Russian preschool educators. This history bears similarities and differences to those of other nations, making this project of interest to cross-cultural comparisons. A particular emphasis is laid on the challenges of, and opportunities for, professionalisation by discussing the issue of professional knowledge and expertise, autonomy, and authority. Data for the study comes from two sources: (1) the historical analysis of preschool educators in Russia; (2) semi-structured interviews undertaken with 25 preschool educators from the major organisations representing them. The research showed the central role played by the state in all historical phases of the professionalisation of Russian early education. It was found that Russian preschool educators are discontented with their current professional standing, and look to the state to enhance it.
