The characteristic of varieties of oilseeds (sunflower, oilseed flax, spring rapeseed, spring surepitsa, Sarepta mustard, white mustard) created in the Siberian experimental station of VNIIMK for a sixty-year period is given. The main directions and stages of selection work are described and a new selection material is presented, which is transferred to the State variety testing based on the results of three years of competitive testing. The scheme of improving seed production for oilseeds used for at the Siberian experimental station is presented.

In the 90s of the last century, the existing seed production system was headed by the Kaliningrad Agricultural Experimental Station (now the Kaliningrad Research Institute of Agriculture) and about 50 specialized seed farms. In the course of the agrarian reform being carried out at that time and as the state and collective farms were reorganized into LLPs, JSCs, etc. the destruction of the existing seed production system took place. The author conducts a systematic analysis of the current situation and proposes import substitution of fodder seeds using the example of the Kaliningrad region.

A retrospective analysis of the state of sugar beet seed production in the Krasnodar Territory has been carried out. The problems are reflected and the factors of intensification of the seed-growing process are named as a necessary condition for the restoration of domestic seedgrowing and an increase in the proportion of seeds of the Kuban selection in the crops of sugar beet in the North-Caucasian region. The results of production testing of sugar beet hybrids selected by the FSBSI “Pervomaysky Selection und Experimental Station of Sugar Beets” in 2019-2020 are presented.

In the laboratory of All-Russian research institute of irrigated vegetable and melon growing of breeding melons there was cultivated a new form of melon with a gynomoecious form and a marker sign - split leaves. A ginomoecious form was genetically controlled and had female flowers with higher saturation than other varieties. It was necessary to solve the problem of evaluating the maternal form by the combining ability with other varieties in order to make a conclusion about its suitability in hybrid seed production. The article presents comparative data on the large-fruited gynomoecious form and its hybrids; it also evaluates the combinational ability of the maternal form against the standard. According to the results of the research, the maternal form of the melon "Gino" and its best hybrid "Ladushka" were transferred to the state variety testing

The accomplishments of the plant breeders of the West Siberian Vegetable Experimental Station, the Branch of the Federal Scientific Centre of Vegetable Crop Production, regarding Altai onion cultivation are discussed. Eighteen candidate varieties were examined, promising ones were selected, and the candidate variety No. 11 was selected in 2008. Further clone selection made it possible to select the candidate variety No. 61/98 which exceeded the released variety in terms of a number of indices. In 2017, this candidate variety was submitted for State Variety Testing as Viktor variety.

In a competitive variety trial, promising selection lines of sugar sorghum were studied in the Lower Volga region. Based on a set of signs, the best lines were identified, which are recommended for transfer to the State Variety Testing. Breeding lines, which are distinguished by high values of commercially valuable traits, can be used in planned crosses to create highly productive varieties and hybrids of sugar sorghum.

The main direction of breeding in melon farming is the creation of varieties with high potential for productivity. The research was conducted at the Bykovskaya experimental station in the Volgograd region. The aim of the research was to create a new competitive watermelon variety malachite, which has a complex of useful and economic characteristics, resistant to biotic and abiotic environmental factors. The characteristic of the initial forms used for hybridization is given. The data of evaluation of the hybrid combination in all stages of the breeding process. According to the results of the 3-year competitive variety testing, the excess of the yield of watermelon malachite over the Sinchevsky standard averaged 1.5 t/ha. The dry matter content for all years of research was at the level of the standard and ranged from 11.4 to 12.4%. The final result of breeding work is the creation of mediumgrade watermelon malachite, which is in the state variety testing.

The article is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the head institution of the Federal Scientific Vegetable Center - the oldest and leading breeding organization for vegetable crops, better known in the scientific and socio-economic spheres of the Russian Federation by its historical name - VNIISSOK. The center's activity dates back to the creation in 1920 of the Gribovskaya Vegetable Breeding Experimental Station, where, under the leadership of Professor Sergei Ivanovich Zhegalov, a theoretical and practical basis for the development of domestic breeding was laid. In 1970, the experimental station was transformed into the AllUnion Research Institute of Selection and Seed Production of Vegetable Crops, and in 1992 into the All-Russian Research Institute of Selection and Seed Production of Vegetable Crops. Over the years, breeding methods have been developed and improved, including modern biotechnological methods, using molecular marking and interspecies hybridization. The results obtained during this period reflect the traditions of scientific schools and approaches laid down by scientists-breeders, seed growers, vegetable growers, flower growers, both in the field of basic research, and in the creation of varieties and hybrids of vegetable crops. The organizational and structural reform of breeding institutions carried out in 2017 contributed to the formation of the Federal scientific vegetable center (FSBSI FSVC), which includes VNIISSOK as the parent organization and 8 branches located in various ecological and geographical zones. At a new stage of development, the FSBSI FSVC continues its glorious traditions. Scientists have obtained world-class results in basic research and competitive selection achievements in priority applied research. The scientific results and structural changes that have occurred over the hundred-year period of the breeding establishment are the foundation for the further development of the vegetable science in the country.
