This study seeks an understanding of how tutors perceived the online part of a blended learning course in the context of teaching English as a foreign language at a German university. To gain knowledge about the ways in which the tutors experienced the phenomenon, a phenomenographic methodological framework was employed. Identified were four different ways of conceiving the online course as: A) a one-way street of communication: to provide students with extra materials to practice individually and for asynchronous communication, B) an add-on to on-campus classes; C) a distant relationship between students and online tutors; and D) an opportunity for tutor's professional development and team communication. The phenomenographic approach allowed to reveal variations of tutors' perceptions of teaching online with a view of enhancing the university curriculum. The findings may have implications for university teachers and educational designers.

Theatre workshop as a foreign language teaching tool: advantages of “trivial literature” in the dramatic-theatrical approach The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of dramatic-theatrical approach to foreign language teaching as exemplified by the use of popular culture, namely an adapted television format (soap opera). In order to achieve this aim, the paper presents the characteristics of the genre that render it useful in foreign language education. The genre’s usability in practical work is exemplified by two successfully implemented theatre workshops. The first one was organized in the Croaticum Centre for Croatian as a Second Language at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Studies, University of Zagreb, in 2006, for students of Croatian as a foreign language. The second workshop was held in 2010 at the Institute of Western and Southern Slavic Studies at the University of Warsaw for students of Bulgarian as a foreign language. Both workshops achieved excellent results in raising language competencies of foreign language speakers. Considering the continued presence of the mentioned genre in popular culture, its use in teaching does not lose its relevance.

The conditions are investigated in which Spanish university teachers carry out their teaching and research functions. 655 teachers from the University of Oviedo took part in this study by completing the Academic Setting Evaluation Questionnaire (ASEQ). Of the three dimensions assessed in the ASEQ, Satisfaction received the lowest ratings, Social Climate was rated higher, and Relations with students was rated the highest. These results are similar to those found in two studies carried out in the academic years 1986/87 and 1989/90. Their relevance for higher education is twofold because these data can be used as a complement of those obtained by means of students' opinions, and the crossing of both types of data can facilitate decision making in order to improve the quality of the work (teaching and research) of the university institutions.

AbstractThe main lines ofthe program designed for the interpretation of ECGs, developed in Padova by LADSEB-CNR with the cooperation of the Medical School of the University of Padova are described. In particular, the strategies used for (i) morphology recognition, (ii) measurement evaluation, and (iii) linguistic decision making are illustrated. The main aspect which discerns this program in comparison with other approaches to computerized electrocardiography is its ability of managing the imprecision in both the measurements and the medical knowledge through the use of fuzzy-set methodologies. So-called possibility distributions are used to represent ill-defined parameters as well as threshold limits for diagnostic criteria. In this way, smooth conclusions are derived when the evidence does not support a crisp decision. The influence of the CSE project on the evolution of the Padova program is illustrated.
