scholarly journals Integrative and Complementary Practices: the Therapeutic Benefits of Aromatherapy and Chromotherapy

Author(s):

Objective: To understand the availability and use of integrative and complementary practices by the SUS; as well as to evaluate two of the various therapy options, chromotherapy and aromatherapy, in relation to their effectiveness and benefits for patients. Method: This is an integrative review of the literature available in the PUBMED and SciELO database, using the descriptors: “Aromatherapy”, “Chromotherapy” and “Alternative Therapy”, duly registered in MeSH/DeCS, using the boolean operator AND. Twenty-nine articles were found, 25 evaluated and, at the end, 11 selected to compose this review. The inclusion criteria were: complete articles, available free of charge, published in English, from 2012 to 2020. Results: The inclusion of integrative and complementary practices (ICPs) in the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) was through the Política Nacional de Práticas Integrativas e Complementares (PNPIC), supported through the Portaria GM/ MS no 971, on May 3, 2006. Brazil is the country characterized as a world reference in the field of ICPs in basic attention. Conclusion: However, several cases of use of chromotherapy and aromatherapy as alternative therapies to promote patient’s health, relieve pain and, among other unique symptoms in each case, were evaluated, and the therapies used proved their efficacy and safety for patients, as well as improved the quality of life of these people.

Background: Hypoparathyroidism is one of the most frequent complications of thyroid surgery, especially when associated with lymph node dissection in cases of thyroid cancer. Fluorescence-guided surgery is an emerging tool that appears to help reduce the rate of this complication. The present review aims to highlight the utility of fluorescence imaging in preserving parathyroid glands during thyroid cancer surgery. Methods: We performed a systematic review of the literature according to PRISMA guidelines to identify published studies on fluorescence-guided thyroid surgery with a particular focus on thyroid cancer. Articles were selected and analyzed per indication and type of surgery, autofluorescence or exogenous dye usage, and outcomes. The Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) was used to assess the methodological quality of the included articles. Results: Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria, with three studies exclusively assessing patients with thyroid cancer. The remaining studies assessed mixed cohorts with thyroid cancer and other thyroid or parathyroid diseases. The majority of the papers support the potential benefit of fluorescence imaging in preserving parathyroid glands in thyroid surgery. Conclusions: Fluorescence-guided surgery is useful in the prevention of post-thyroidectomy hypoparathyroidism via enhanced early identification, visualization, and preservation of the parathyroid glands. These aspects are notably beneficial in cases of associated lymphadenectomy for thyroid cancer.

Pharmacists have a valuable role in the management of allergic rhinitis (AR) at the community pharmacy level. This role has been reported extensively in numerous papers. However, a systematic review of the available literature and a comprehensive analysis of the outcomes has not been published. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the impact of interventions developed by pharmacists on clinical AR outcomes. A thorough search was performed in three electronic databases, including studies published between January 2000 and June 2019. After the selection process, only three articles met the inclusion criteria and were further analysed. Despite the scarcity of the available studies, in all of them was clear that the pharmacist plays a pivotal role in the management of AR, significantly improving the patients’ quality of life and symptom control. This systematic review also stresses the utmost importance to investigate and report practices and interventions developed by pharmacists using measurable outcomes.

This paper presents the discussion about the viability of alternative therapies, as well as the possibilities of its application. It is emphasized that some researchers refer warily to alternative therapies, but most publications are in solidarity with regards to its positive aspects and expediency of application. The authors have studied the scientific literature, and based on its own information, concluded that the alternative therapy doesn´t opposed to the official medicine, moreover, the alternative therapy contributes as an additional strategy, to improving the effectiveness of the influence on the patient treated by means of the standard methods of prevention and treatment of acute and chronic pathology, of human cancers. Alternative therapy gives hope, the patients live psychologically motivated expectation of arrival of the long-awaited, if not health in the biological sense of this word, at least positive clinical effect, long-term remission, improved quality of life. Based on the study of the scientific literature and own data, devoted to the clinical, pathophysiological and experimental studies with the use of the sulfide mineral water, chronophototherapy by the Siberian ginseng, the phy-toveta, the adaptogenic phytococtails "Biorhythm-PC" as a means of alternative therapy, the positive results were received, showing their high efficiency. From the viewpoint of the authors, alternative medicine as part of regenerative medicine should still be regarded as an effective structural and functional element of reparative biogenesis.

<p>Optimism is a moderating psychological factor in sports performance. The aim of this study is to review the current evidence regarding optimism and sports performance. To this end, a systematic review of the literature was conducted, taking in consideration only those that followed PRISMA guidelines (Urrútia &amp; Bonfill, 2013). The following databases were used with the predefined inclusion criteria (optimism and sports performance): PubMed, WOS, Scopus, Psycinfo and SportDiscus. The study was assessed using the Critical Reading and Evaluation of Epidemiological Studies (Berra, Elorza-Ricart, Estrada &amp; Sanchez, 2008). Interrater reliability was verified withCohen’s Kappacoefficient(2 judges). The majority of the studies performed correlational analyses between LOT scale results and athletic performance (<em>n </em>= 7). As a result, a positive correlation was observed between optimism and athletic performance. In general, the quality of the studies was considered average. Future studies should take in consideration the use of additional, higher quality and more rigorous experimental procedures.</p>

A  stage  considered  essential  to  the  implementation  of  the  practice informed  by  evidence  is  called  the  synthesis  of  evidence.  However,  its design  and implementation  is  still  far  from  researchers,  educational  institutions  and  research professionals,  etc.  In  order  to  facilitate  the  understanding  of  readers  on  the  subject, concatenating concepts and practice, are detailed below as the spring and summer OBJN editorials.  One  of  the  most  accepted  ways  to  develop  the  synthesis of  science  is  the systematic  review  of  the  literature  (SLR).  The  explicit,  systematic  and  reproducible methods  used  in  the  SLR  aim  to  minimize  different  types  of  bias,  including  critical evaluation of the quality of the studies that meet the inclusion criteria of the review in question.  When  the  evidence  produced  generates  recommendations  for  practice  and policy, the inclusion of low-quality evidence at high risk of bias is problematic.

The comments by Spada et al. (which are similar in style and content to the ones already made by the authors on the Italian Ministry of Health Web site) are based on misunderstandings and manipulations. The essence of systematic reviews is to sum up available knowledge and minimize bias. The latter is done by a priori stating study inclusion criteria both in the protocol and in the full HTA report (see Fig. 1, p. 299) and assessing methodological quality of included studies using an instrument which was specified in the protocol text and never changed (the Quality Assessment Diagnostic Accuracy Studies checklist or QUADAS). The purpose of inclusion criteria and bias minimization efforts is to ensure that what is included in a review is both relevant and contributes evidence weighted by its reliability to answer the study question (in our case the diagnostic performance of WCE in the small bowel). The high number of excluded studies is thus irrelevant, although it is a common feature of systematic reviews. What matters is what the included studies tell us.

Vasomotor symptoms are most common signs of the menopausal syndrome. Frequent episodes of flushes and hyperhidrosis affect sleep, mood, and quality of life. Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) remains the «gold standard» of treatment. However, some women have contraindications to MHT, and others refuse to take hormones due to personal reasons. In such cases, alternative therapy may become an option. This article presents a review of the literature regarding the role of alternative therapy in the treatment of vasomotor symptoms. We searched Russian and international data bases for pharmacological products (natural and synthetic) used to relieve menopausal flushes. The review presents medication registered in the Russian Federation as well as products used abroad.

Introduction: Endoscopic staple-assisted diverticulostomy (ESD) is generally accepted as the preferred treatment option for patients with Zenker’s diverticulum (ZD). However, anatomical factors may preclude the use of ESD in certain patients. In recent years, the harmonicscalpel has been introduced as an alternative device for endoscopic management of ZD, which may be useful in certain cases where diverticulum anatomy prevents the use of ESD. This review aims to assess the efficacy and safety of endoscopic ZD-repair using the harmonic-scalpel, including comparative analysis of the harmonic and staple assisted approaches in terms of their surgical outcomes. Conclusion: Most studies support the use of the harmonic-scalpel as a safe and effective treatment option for ZD. Although the harmonic-assisted technique may not replace ESD as the initial treatment of choice for ZD, it may serve as a useful adjunct to treatment in selected cases. However, given the low quality of evidence and concerns regarding treatment complications, large prospective randomised trials comparing the harmonic and staple-assisted techniques are necessary in order to determine whether the harmonic-scalpel is truly a viable option for endoscopic ZD-management.

Abstract. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global social concern: many women are affected by this phenomenon and by the difficulty of putting an end to it. This review of the literature aims to identify help-seeking facilitating and inhibiting factors in response to IPV. It was carried out on the PsycINFO and Medline databases using the following keywords: “intimate partner violence,” “domestic violence,” “help-seeking,” and “help-seeking barrier.” Ninety out of 771 eligible publications were included on the basis of inclusion criteria. The results highlight that (1) research on this phenomenon is very recent and underdeveloped in Europe, (2) theoretical and conceptual frameworks are poorly developed and extended, (3) there is a significant impact of violence characteristics (e.g., severity, type) on help-seeking, and (4) help-seeking is a complex and multifactorial process influenced by a wide range of factors simultaneously individual and social. To conclude, these findings lead us to propose a psychosocial conceptualization of the help-seeking process by indicating how the levels of explanation approach in social psychology can be applied to this field of research in order to increase our understanding of this phenomenon.
