The microstructure of cast Al-4Si-Mg reinforcedwith fly ash particles at various particlecontents has been studied. The composites were fabricated by stir casting process andcharacterized by optical microscopy, image analyzer, scanning electron microscopy and hardness measurements. The results showed that particle contents affected to the presence oforosities and hardness of the composites. It was observed that increasing the fly ash contentincrease the porosity in the composites, with the matrix alloy reinforced with 15 wt.% of fly ash particles having the highest porosity and lowest hardness.

In the stir casting process, homogeneous dispersion of reinforcing particles within the matrix material is one such major problem, which influences on the properties of composites. In this research, an attempt has been made to study the influence of fly ash wt.% (10 ,15 and 20), ratio of the impeller outer dia to crucible inner dia (0.7,0.5 and 0.3) and processing method (liquid state stirring, two step stirring and modified two step stirring) on the mechanical properties and the distribution of fly ash particles in the Al matrix.Optimum parameters were identified for attaining the maximum mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength of composites by the application of Taguchi method, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the results were validated by confirmation test.The present work could provide a guide for the industrial preparation of composites.

Aluminum based metal matrix composites offer greater potential for light weight, wear resistant and high temperature applications. Secondary processing like extrusion results in the improvement of strength and ductility of the as-cast composites. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of reinforcement type and extrusion process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot extruded Al2014 aluminum alloy. Two different composites were made by reinforcing the alloy with 10 wt.% SiC and 10 wt.% Si3N4 particles using stir casting method. The particles were electroless Ni coated to improve the wettability of reinforcement by the matrix alloy. The composite ingots were further extruded at 475 °C with an extrusion ratio of 8:1. The microstructures and the mechanical properties of the base alloy and the composites were examined systematically. The extruded composites show more homogenous microstructure with uniform distribution of particles in the matrix alloy. Both the Al/SiC and Al/Si3N4 composites exhibited improved hardness compared to the base alloy in both as-cast and extruded conditions. It was also found from tension tests that the both the composites show higher yield strength, ductility and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) than the base alloy in the extruded condition. The reason for improvement in strength in the extruded conditions is explained in detail. Fracture surface analysis revealed the transition from brittle fracture mode in the as cast composites to the ductile fracture in the extruded condition.

The present work aims to preparation and investigation of the corrosion behavior of  recycling Al alloy based metal matrix composite reinforced with nano SiC with weight percentage (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%) and particle size 52 nm were evaluated. The composites were fabricated using liquid metallurgy (stir casting process). The corrosion rates of composites were calculated using potentiostatic  measurements in 3.5% NaCl solution.. The results showed that Al/SiC nanocomposites have higher corrosion resistance than aluminum matrix.The corrosion resistance was found to be increased by increasing of the weight percentage of the nanoparticles The Al/8% nano (SiC)P composites exhibited the highest corrosion resistance among all the investigated nanocomposites. The microstructure  indicate that the strong interfacial bonding between the matrix alloy and reinforcement.

AZ91D alloy composites reinforced by CNTs/SiCp were fabricated using stir casting process. The mechanical properties of the composites were tested, observed and analyzed the microstructure, the fractographs were observed and analyzed via scanning electron microscope. The results showed that CNTs/SiCp could not only refine the grains of the composites, but also bear the load of resistance to deformation. Compared with the matrix alloy, the tensile strength, the elastic modulus, the micro-hardness and the elongation rate of the composites had been enhanced significantly. But the mechanical properties would be fell down with the more addition of CNTs/SiCp.

Purpose This paper aims to improve the tribological properties of aluminum alloys and reduce their wear rate. Design/methodology/approach Carbon is placed in the model at room temperature, pour 680°C of molten aluminum into the pressure chamber, and then pressed it into the mold containing carbon felt through a die casting machine, and waited for it to cool, which used an injection pressure of 52.8 MPa and held the same pressure for 15 s. Findings The result indicated that the mechanical properties of matrix and composite are similar, and the compressive strength of the composite is only 95% of the matrix alloy. However, the composite showed a low friction coefficient, the friction coefficient of Gr/Al composite is only 0.15, which just is two-third than that of the matrix alloy. Similarly, the wear rate of the composite is less than 4% of the matrix. In addition, the composite can avoid severe wear before 200°C, but the matrix alloy only 100°C. Originality/value This material has excellent friction properties and is able to maintain this excellent performance at high temperatures. Novel hemp fiber reinforced geopolymer composites were fabricated. The matrix was a new geopolymer based on a mixture of red mud and fly ash. Chopped, randomly oriented hemp fibers were used as reinforcement. The mechanical properties of the geopolymer composite, such as diametral tensile (DTS) (or Brazilian tensile) strength and compressive strength (CS), were measured. The geopolymer composites reinforced with 9 vol.% and 3 vol.% hemp fiber yielded average DTS values of 5.5 MPa and average CS values of 40 MPa. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies were carried out to evaluate the microstructure and fracture surfaces of the composites. The results indicated that the addition of hemp fiber is a promising approach to improve the mechanical strength as well as to modify the failure mechanism of the geopolymer, which changed from brittle to “pseudo-ductile”.

Aluminium composites are in predominant use due to their lower weight and high strength among the MMC’s. Aluminium 6061 is selected as matrix and E-glass fiber is selected as reinforcement. Fabrication of composite is done by stir casting method. Each fabrication carries the E-glass reinforcement content varied from 2% to 10%. The present article attempts to evaluate the mechanical properties of E-glass fibre reinforced composite and study the effect of reinforcement on the matrix alloy through mechanical properties. When compared to ascast mechanical properties the UTS has increased from 74.28 N/sq mm to 146.8 N/sq mm for a composite at 6% E-glass. The hardness of as-cast has also increased from 22 RHB to 43 RHB at 6% E-glass and the wear of composite has exhibited a decreasing tend with increase in reinforcement content along the sliding distance. The results are analyzed in certain depth in the current paper. The mechanical properties of composites have improved with the increase in the weigh percentage of glass fiber in the aluminium matrix.

This paper presents the characterization of A356 composite reinforced with fly ash and basalt ash produced by stir casting method. Aluminium metal matrix composites (AMC) are used in wide variety of applications such as structural, aerospace, marine, automotive etc. Stir casting is cost effective manufacturing process and it is useful to enhance the attractive properties of AMCs. Three sets of hybrid AMC are prepared by varying the weight fraction of the reinforcements (3% basalt + 7% fly ash, 5% basalt + 5% fly, 7% basalt + 3% fly ash). The effect of reinforcements on the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites such as hardness, tensile, compressive and impact strength were studied. The obtained results reveal that tensile, compressive and impact strength was increased when weight fraction of fly ash increased, whereas the hardness increases when weight fraction of the basalt ash increased. Microscopic study reveals the dispersion of the reinforcements in the matrix.

The goal of this research is to improve the mechanical properties such as strength, hardness and wear resistance for automotive application such as brake shoe and bearings due to high cycle, load and impact during their usage. Therefore, another alloying element or reinforcement addition is necessary. In this work, the composites are made by ADC 12 (Al-Si aluminum alloy) as the matrix and reinforced with micro SiC through stir casting process and TiB is added various from (0.04, 0.06, 0.15, 0.3 and 0.5) wt.% that act as grain refiners and 5 wt.% of Mg is added to improve the wettability of the composites. The addition of TiB improves the mechanical properties because the grain becomes finer and uniform, and the addition of Mg makes the matrix and reinforce have better adhesion. The results obtained that the optimum composition was found by adding 0.15 wt.% of TiB with tensile strength improve from 98 MPa to 136.3 MPa, hardness from 35 to 53 HRB and wear rate reduced from 0.006 2 mm3 s−1 to 0.002 3 mm3 s−1 respectively.

The mechanical properties and the fracture mechanism of composites consisting of ZA-27 alloy reinforced with titanium dioxide particles were investigated with the primary objective of understanding the influence of the particulate reinforcement on the mechanical behaviour of the ZA-27 alloy. The titanium dioxide particle content in the composites ranged from 0 to 6 per cent, in steps of 2 wt %. The composites were fabricated by the stir casting technique in which the reinforcement particles were dispersed in the vortex created in the molten matrix alloy. The study revealed improvements in Young's modulus, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), compressive strength, yield strength and hardness of the composites as the titanium dioxide content was increased, but at the expense of ductility and impact strength. The fracture behaviour of the composite was also significantly influenced by the presence of titanium dioxide particles. Eventual fracture was a result of crack propagation through the matrix as well as through the reinforcing particles. Scanning electron microscopy and fractography analyses were carried out to provide suitable explanations for the observed phenomena.
