The goal of this research is to improve the mechanical properties such as strength, hardness and wear resistance for automotive application such as brake shoe and bearings due to high cycle, load and impact during their usage. Therefore, another alloying element or reinforcement addition is necessary. In this work, the composites are made by ADC 12 (Al-Si aluminum alloy) as the matrix and reinforced with micro SiC through stir casting process and TiB is added various from (0.04, 0.06, 0.15, 0.3 and 0.5) wt.% that act as grain refiners and 5 wt.% of Mg is added to improve the wettability of the composites. The addition of TiB improves the mechanical properties because the grain becomes finer and uniform, and the addition of Mg makes the matrix and reinforce have better adhesion. The results obtained that the optimum composition was found by adding 0.15 wt.% of TiB with tensile strength improve from 98 MPa to 136.3 MPa, hardness from 35 to 53 HRB and wear rate reduced from 0.006 2 mm3 s−1 to 0.002 3 mm3 s−1 respectively.

This work deals with the examination of the mechanical properties of Aluminium (LM6) reinforced with iron oxide (Fe2O3). Stir casting process is used to formulate the composite sampling by varying iron oxide in 5% and 10% by weight. Three different heat treatment process of hardening, annealing and normalizing is carried out on samples of aluminium (LM6), aluminium (LM6) + 5% Fe2O3 and aluminium (LM6) + 10% Fe2O3. Composite specimens are tested to analyze the mechanical properties such as hardness, yield stress, tensile strength and elongation. Present reinforcement specks enabled the alloy to preserve higher hardness during the heat treatment. Results have shown substantial improvements in properties of the specimens with various compositions of reinforcement.

Nd, Y and Ca containing Mg-Zn-Zr alloys are produced by electromagnetic direct-chilling casting process, and extruded at a temperature of 643K with two extrusion ratios of 38:1 and 22:1, respectively. The grain size is markedly reduced from 80µm in as-cast alloy to 2~5µm in as-extruded alloy due to dynamic recrystallization, and lamellar eutectics at grain boundaries in as-cast alloy are broken up and fine precipitates in the matrix come forth during hot extrusions. Mechanical properties of the alloys are measured by tensile test from room temperature to 523K. Nd, Y and Ca are favorable to the strength of the hot-extruded alloy, especially the elevated-temperature strength, which is above 200MPa in ultimate tensile strength at 523K.

The effect of AlN addition in Al-Si alloy composites on the mechanical properties and dry wear behaviour were studied using pre-selected parameter conditions. In this work, high purity of AlN powders with different weight percentage of 5, 7 and 10 were used as reinforced materials for the composites. Morphology of the reinforced composite indicated that both silicon grains and inter-metallic compounds were surrounded by the AlN particles. The presence of AlN in the Al-Si alloy showed a significant improvement in tensile properties in which 7wt% of AlN addition increased up to 25% compared to those of without any reinforcements. Fracture morphologies with small dimples, tear ridges and necking features indicated that ductile fractures had occurred on the Al-Si composites. At 25N load, alloys with 5wt% of AlN exhibited high wear resistances whereas at 70N, alloys with 10wt% of AlN showed a great improvement in wear resistance. SEM investigation also revealed that the presence of wear was also marked with prominent grooves, craters and scoring marks. Overall, alloys with 7wt% AlN addition possessed great improvement in hardness, tensile and wear resistance properties.

High lead–tin bronze is widely used in the selection of wear-resistant parts such as bearings, bearing bushes, aerospace pump rotors, turbines, and guide plates because of its excellent wear resistance, thermal conductivity, fatigue resistance, and strong load-bearing capacity. At present, high lead–tin bronze is used as a material for bimetal cylinders, which cannot meet the requirements of high-strength, anti-wear in actual working conditions under high temperature, high speed, and heavy load conditions, and is prone to de-cylinder, cylinder holding, copper sticking, etc. The reason for the failure of cylinder body parts is that the strength of copper alloy materials is insufficient, the proportion of lead in the structure is serious, and the wear resistance of the material is reduced. Therefore, it has important theoretical significance and application value to carry out research on the comprehensive properties of high-performance lead–tin bronze materials and reveal the strengthening and toughening mechanism. In this paper, The ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy is taken as the main research object, and the particle size, microstructure, mechanical properties, and friction of lead particles in ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy are systematically studied after single addition of B in ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy liquid. This paper takes ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy as the research object to study the effect of adding B on the morphology, microstructure, mechanical properties, and friction and wear properties of ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy lead particles, and discusses the strengthening and toughening mechanism of ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy under the action of B, and prepares a double high-performance lead–tin bronze alloy for metal cylinders. The main research results are as follows: The addition of B elements has an obvious refining effect on the α (Cu) equiaxed grains and lead particles in ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy. The average size of lead particles decreases from 30.0 µm to 24.8 µm as the B content increases from 0 wt.% to 0.1 wt.%. The reason for grain refinement is that B is easily concentrated at the grain boundary during the ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy solidification process, which affects the diffusion of solute atoms at the solidification interface, inhibits the grain growth, refines the grain, and hinders the sinking and homogenizes distribution between dendrites of lead; the tensile strength of the ZCuPb20Sn5 alloy improves. Relatively without B, when the addition of P is 0.1 wt.%, the tensile strength is the largest at 244.04 MPa, which enhances 13%; the maximum hardness gets 75.0 HB, which enhances 13.6%, as well as elongation get the maximum value at 17.2%. The main mechanism is that the addition of B forms a high melting point submicron Ni4B3 phase in the lead–tin bronze alloy. The Ni4B3 phase is dispersed in the matrix and strengthens the matrix. With the increase in B content (more than 0.1 wt.%), the Ni4B3 phase changes from sub-micron degree granular to micron degree block-like, and some defects such as shrinkage and porosity appear in the structure, resulting in a decrease in mechanical properties.

In this investigation, aluminium-silicon-based alloy (LM6) with the addition of (0, 2.5, 5, and 10%) copper-coated short steel fiber and 5% boron carbide (B4C) element-strengthened composites was fabricated by the stir casting method. Mechanical properties and tribological behaviors of LM6-based hybrid composites were investigated, and microstructures of different castings were examined by an image analyzer. The test was conducted at different loads (10, 20, 30, and 40 N) and different sliding spaces (500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 m), respectively. The results revealed that the sample loaded with 10% of reinforcement recorded the highest tensile strength of 231 MPa. On the other hand, the hardness value increased from 71 to 144 BHN, when 15% of reinforcement was added to the sample. It was also noted that 10% copper-coated steel fiber improved wear resistance up to 50% when compared to LM6. A field emission scanning electron microscope was employed to observe the morphology of the worn surfaces of composites at different sliding distances and load conditions. The hybrid composite revealed that the combination of both short steel fibers and reinforcement of ceramic particles enhanced the mechanical properties, obtaining superior wear resistance.

Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) particulates were fabricated using the stir casting process. The as-cast specimens were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results indicated that flake-like silicon particles and HEA particles were distributed uniformly in the aluminum matrix. TEM micrographs revealed the presence of both the matrix and reinforcement phases, and no intermetallic phases were formed at the interface of the matrix and reinforcement phases. The mechanical properties of hardness and tensile strength increased with an increase in the HEA content. The Al 6063–5 wt.% HEA composite had a ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of approximately 197 MPa with a reasonable ductility (around 4.05%). The LM25–5 wt.% HEA composite had a UTS of approximately 195 Mpa. However, the percent elongation decreased to roughly 3.80%. When the reinforcement content increased to 10 wt.% in the LM25 composite, the UTS reached 210 MPpa, and the elongation was confined to roughly 3.40%. The fracture morphology changed from dimple structures to cleavage planes on the fracture surface with HEA weight percentage enhancement. The LM25 alloy reinforced with HEA particles showed enhanced mechanical strength without a significant loss of ductility; this composite may find application in marine and ship building industries.

Aluminum alloys are used low density good mechanical properties, better wear resistance as compared to predictable metals and their alloys. The industries are continuing in demand to develop light weight material, inexpensive and strong material which has led to the growth of aluminum alloy metal matrix composites. The aluminum based metal matrix composites have been moulded using TiO2 as reinforcement materials using the stir casting process. The hardness and tensile strength have been calculated addition to the TiO2 in Aluminium matrix improves the hardness of the material. The tensile strength and hardness increases above 4% of titanium oxide particles in the matrix.

Aluminium 6061 composites have been succesfully produced by stirr casting method. The process involved melting aluminium at 800°C and mixed with AlSr, TiB and Mg to produce master alloy of matrix phase, then degassing to remove all of gas entrapped in molten aluminium by argon. There are two types of particles reinforced added into aluminium to produce aluminium composite such as SiC and Al2O3. The particles reinforced addition for both SiC and Al2O3 are started from 2vf-% to 10vf-% to obtain the optimum compostion which have good mechanial propperties. The addition of 10wt-% Mg is to promote wetting between matrix and reinforced while the addition of AlSr and TiB are to improve mechanical properties by modifying the eutectic structure as well as grain refinement of the matrix phases. The two composites are compaired both mechanical properties and microstructure analysis. The mechanical properties of Al/SiC composites such as tensile strength, elongation, and hardness have a maximum value at addition of 10 Vf-% SiC with the value up to 230 MPa, 6.5%, and 62 HRB respectively. While for Al/Al2O3 composites have the highest tensile strength and elongation at 6 Vf-% Al2O3 with the value of 224 MPa and 7% respectively, but the highest hardness is obtained at addition of 10 Vf-% Al2O3 reaches to 55 HRB. The percentages of porosity were increased for both composites along with the increase of particles reinforced. The microstrutures for both composites are similar since they have the same matrix and Sr clearly changed primary Mg2Si become finer chinese scripts, while TiB as grain refiner worked efficiently for higher reinforced particles addition because the grain size reduced for both composites.

In this article, Al7075 matrix with SiC as reinforcement particle was developed and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness, and impact strength was investigated. Aluminum is preferred as a matrix phase because Al alloys have low density and good ductility. Silicon carbide is chosen as a reinforcement phase due to its brittle and hard properties to enhance the wear properties. Mechanical properties of aluminum metal matrix have been tested at different temperatures and holding time. It shows an ultimate tensile strength of 121 N/mm2 at 800°C processing temperature and 20 mins of holding time. At a processing temperature of 850°C, it shows maximum hardness and impact strength. Among all the fabrication processes, stir casting is chosen because stir casting process is the simplest and cheapest for fabricating metal matrix composites (MMCs). Microelectronic and aerospace packaging industry requires a material with optimum hardness and impact strength to prevent the material from wear and impact during material handling. These MMCs will be a replacement for traditionally used materials such as W-Cu, BeO, and Kovar in packaging application.

The investigation of mechanical properties of silicon carbide (SiC) powders reinforced with aluminum alloy composites are recorded in this paper. SiC powders of approximately 35µm size were added in an aluminum alloy matrix to manufacture the samples of ratios 1, 2, 3 and 4 by weight % using the stir casting technique. The specimens were fabricated and several tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness and impact strength and then the values are compared with the base alloy. It has been observed from the results that the hardness, impact energy and tensile strength increases with the increase in % of SiC particles until 2% and drops on further increase in the SiC particles.
