Nursery of juvenile lobsters in the coastal area was attempted but survival was very low with unknown causes of mortality. The study determined whether communal or individualized houses affect the growth and survival of small and big juvenile lobsters after 60 days nursery culture in the laboratory. Four (4) treatments with four (4) replicates were identified in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and these were small juvenile lobsters in communal tank (T1), small juvenile lobsters in individualized tank (T2), big juvenile lobsters in communal tank (T3) and big juvenile lobsters in individualized tank (T4). Results showed that communal tank for big juveniles attained significantly (P<0.05) highest weight increment of 5.31±1.66 g compared to individualized house for both sizes of lobsters (2.15±1.45 g and 0.68±0.49 g) and communal tank for small lobsters of 1.26±0.97 g. However, survival rate was very low in all treatments with communal tank obtained the highest survival of 45.75±8.50% with no significant difference among individualized tanks for both sizes of lobsters (29.00±20.93% and 20.75±15.76%) and communal tank for small lobsters (20.92±15.93%). Thus, communal tank is better than individualized tank in the nursery, particularly, for big juvenile lobsters but some aspects of the nursery may be improved to increase higher survival rate.

ABSTRACT Ivy gourd is an underutilized vegetables found in the North of Minas Gerais State-Brazil. It is mainly consumed raw as salad. Pickling fruits can enhance the commercial exploitation of this species. However, no information on the processing techniques of the ivy gourd fruits in Brazil is found in literature. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality parameters in the production of pickled ivy gourd. The treatments consisted of three bleaching times (3, 6 and 9 minutes), using a completely randomized design, with seven replicates. We evaluated the traits: instrumental analyzes of pH, color, total titratable acidity, soluble solids, texture and sensorial affective tests. The pH is within the indicated range (below 4.5) and the bleaching time influenced the color and texture alteration since the sample under 3-minute bleaching presented a greater tendency for green and greater firmness. For the sensory analysis, no significant difference related to sensory scoring was noticed; in relation to mode value, we concluded that the 6-minute sample was more preferable, though. For titratable total acidity and soluble solids analyses, no significant differences between the samples was noticed, considering that both parameters were within the standard when compared to other literature. We concluded that heat treatment influenced only the texture and color intensity and the preserved product showed good acceptability.

AbstractTwo sequential indoor rearing trials each of 21 days duration were conducted to investigate the effect of light intensity and photoperiod respectively on the growth and survival of Ompok bimaculatus larvae. In first trial, five different light intensities viz. 0, 300, 500, 900, 1200 lx were applied randomly to 800 larvae (0.003 g; 0.51 cm) stocked in triplicate following a completely randomized design into aquarium (30.0 x 15.0 x 15.0 cm) tanks. Sequentially, in second trial, five photoperiod cycles (light: dark, L: D) namely, 24L: 0D, 16L: 8D, 12L: 12D, 8L: 16D and 0L: 24D in combination with the best performing light intensity (300 lx) as observed from the first trial were employed in triplicates in similar set up. From the first trial, significantly higher survival was observed in 0 and 300 lx, whereas growth was highest in 900 lx (P < 0.05). In the second trial, survival was higher in continuous darkness (0L: 24D), whereas, maximum growth was recorded in 24L: 0D and 16L: 8D groups (P < 0.05). Performance index (PI) showed no significant difference (P > 0.05) among 0 and 300 lx light intensities, but were reduced at higher light intensities. The lowest PI was found in 12L: 12D and 8L: 16D condition but did not have any effect in other photoperiod cycles. Overall, from the present study it can be concluded that growth of the larvae is found to be higher in higher light intensity (900lx) and longer photoperiodic cycles (24L: 0D and 16L: 8D), however, better survival was recorded in total dark conditions suggesting that continuous dark condition is recommended for better hatchery performance of the larvae.
