Outing Biology: Finding a Place for the Natural Sciences in Queer Discourses

This paper critically responds to Stacy Alaimo’s “Eluding Capture: The Science, Culture and Pleasure of Queer Animals” (2010), from Queer Ecologies by Bruce Erickson and Catrina Mortimer-Sandilands. Here, I focus on how the author addresses the relationship between social sciences and natural sciences, how social structures impact the ways in which we understand and interpret scientific data, and how she suggests we embrace the concept of “Naturecultures” in order to move forward in recognizing that heteronormative accounts of life, while dominant, are not the only possible lenses through which nature and sex can/should be seen. I explore Alaimo’s arguments against various different accounts of “same-sex” sexual activity in nature, whilst also reiterating that she does not wish to use animal sex as a form of validation for the LGBTQ+ community, reducing its mere existance to that of biological essentialism and erasing any possible discussions of gender/sexual fluidity by doing so. Instead, she cleverly uses rhetoric regarding animal sex and their perceived sexuality to expose the intrinsic heteronormativity that permeates even the supposedly “empirical” biological sciences, whilst bringing forward what I perceive as a very valuable discussion regarding how social life influences biological life, as opposed to the other way around.  Keywords: naturecultures, biopolitics, sexuality, queer

Abstract The interconnectivity paradigm, axiologically, wants to offer a new, more open, dialogue and dialogue view of the world of human beings and scientists, able to open dialogue and cooperation, be transparent, accountable to the public and forward-looking. While ontologically, the relationship between the various disciplines of science becomes more open and dialogue of scholarship derived from the texts (Hadlarah al-Nash), and the factual-historical-empirical scholarly culture, social sciences and the natural sciences (Hadlarah al-Ilm ) as well as ethical-philosophical science culture (Hadlarah al-Falsafah). This paper argues that the thought of M. Amin Abdullah contributed greatly to scholarship related to contemporary humanisties approaches, such as hermeneutics, contemporary linguistics, the natural sciences, by revealing the scientific treasures of Bayani, Burhani and Irfani in the Islamic cultural tradition. Both traditions are attempted to compare in matrices and then deliver on a choice of scientific formats that are integrative and interconnective and able to disperse the tensions of religious social conflict in multicultural societies. Keywords: M. Tulisan ini berpendapat bahwa pemikiran M. Amin Abdullah berkontribusi besar bagi keilmuan terkait pendekatan humanisties-kontemporer, seperti hermeneutik, linguistis kontemporer, ilmu-ilmu kealaman, dengan mengungkap kembali kekuatan khazanah  keilmuan Bayani, Burhani dan Irfani dalam tradisi budaya Islam. Kedua tradisi tersebut dicoba dibandingkan dalam matrik dan kemudian mengantarkan pada suatu pilihan format keilmuan yang bersifat integratif dan interkonektif dan mampu meredahkan ketegangan konflik sosial keagamaan dalam masyarakat multikulturalisme. Keywords: M. Resumen: Se analiza el tratamiento de la idea de río y sus relaciones con la ciudad en los libros de texto de Educación Secundaria, con el fin de valorar su influencia en la comprensión de los fenómenos fluviales en entornos urbanos por los escolares. Se han revisado textos de ciencias naturales y ciencias sociales de uso frecuente en España y se han sometido a análisis de contenido mediante selección y tratamiento de unidades de información, siguiendo un sistema de categorías relacionadas con el concepto de río y su interacción con la ciudad. Se concluye que la relación ciudad-río tiene escasa presencia en los libros de texto, está marcada por el valor económico del agua, el río como amenaza y en el ahorro doméstico como único compromiso. Esta visión mercantilista, antropocéntrica y superficial no facilita el aprendizaje crítico de la realidad ni ayuda al cambio necesario en las relaciones de las ciudades con sus ríos.Abstract: The treatment of the idea of river and its relations with the city is analyzed in Secondary Education textbooks, in order to assess its influence on the understanding of fluvial phenomena in urban environments by schoolchildren. Texts of natural sciences and social sciences of frequent use in Spain have been reviewed and have been subjected to content analysis by selection and treatment of information units, following a system of categories related to the river concept and its interaction with the city. It is concluded that the relationship city-river has little presence in textbooks, is marked by the economic value of water, the river as a threat and in domestic savings as the only commitment. This mercantilist, anthropocentric and superficial vision does not facilitate the critical learning of reality or help the necessary change in the relationships between cities and their rivers.

An integrated science and technology policy is both complex and urgent. We have gradually come to understand that the relationship between science and technology is not neat and linear: it is not a case of first some basic science; thereafter some design and development; and then products, profits and the end to unemployment! A comprehensive science and technology policy is not a matter which is internal to science and technology, it also lies within the domain of several of the social sciences. This article reflects, in some generality, upon the relationship between the social and natural sciences, and examines some of the differences and similarities in methods and models as used by the social and natural sciences.

AbstractCharacteristic to the Anthropocene is global ecological crisis that humans have created without knowing any effective solution. Beyond the division of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, there thus emerged a series of serious attempts to figure out an adequate theoretical framework for comprehending the formation, development and future of the Anthropocene. Ecological Marxists also actively participate in this discussion to problematize the relationship between the Anthropocene and capitalism, which results in a new debate. While second-stage ecosocialists such as John Bellamy Foster and Paul Burkett are trying to connect the general issues of the Anthropocene to the concept of the ‘metabolic rift’, Jason W. Moore not only replaces the concept of the Anthropocene with the ‘Capitalocene’ and rejects the metabolic rift approach as falling into the ‘Cartesian division’, which cannot aptly theorize the nature of today’s crisis. Critically analyzing Moore’s ‘monist’ understanding of the history of capitalist development, this paper examines why Marx used apparently ‘dualist’ terminologies in his analysis. Moore claims that his post-Cartesian approach is the correct interpretation of Marx’s political economy, but a closer examination of Marx’s method reveals his non-Cartesian dualism, which functions as a basis for a radical critique of today’s ecological crisis. Furthermore, this paper argues that Marx’s theory of metabolism must be understood in relation to his intensive research on natural sciences and non-Western societies to envision possibilities of the revolutionary subjectivity.

This chapter explores the debates on what race is. For some time, the dominant social constructionist approach in the social sciences has insisted that the only proper way to regard race is by refuting any connection with biology. Attention to the many ways in which race is socially constructed has been important; but, while a construction is not ‘unreal’, there is a common further step in which race is thereby deemed to be not valid. The rejection of race tends to treat race as something that would be ‘real’ if it were located in science and biology. The chapter then shows how recent developments in the natural sciences and changing views on the relationship between the natural and social sciences problematise that view. Yet in opposition to post-race views, critical scholars can then be seen to draw on conventional categories of race to show that racialised inequality still matters.

This paper discusses methods to model the concept of synergy at the level of manifest categorical variables. First, a classification of concepts of synergy is presented. A dditive and nonadditive concepts of synergy are distinguished. Most prominent among the nonadditive concepts is superadditive synergy. Examples are given from the natural sciences and the social sciences. M delling focuses on the relationship between the agents involved in a synergetic process. These relationships are expressed in form of contrasts, expressed in effect coding vectors in design matrices for nonstandard log-linear models. A method by Schuster is used to transform design matrices such that parameters reflect the proposed relationships. A n example reanalyses data presented by Bishop, Fienberg, and Holland (1975) that describe the development of thromboembolisms in women who differ in their patterns of contraceptive use and smoking. Alternative methods of analysis are com pared. Implications for developmental research are discussed.

Symbol systems and social structures are prominent concepts with long historical legacies in the social sciences. This chapter traces how symbol systems and social structures have been theorized independently of each other in the social sciences during the 20th century, before elaborating the ways in which sociologists have theorized the relationship between the two. Marx, Weber, and Simmel offered important ideas about this relationship, but Durkheim’s account of the social origins of mental structures provides the most direct and elaborated theory about the relationship between mental and social structures within the classical sociological period. Subsequently, we trace Durkheim’s legacy through three contemporary perspectives: field theory, neo-institutionalism, and culture and cognition. While maintaining analytical continuity with the Durkheimian tradition, these perspectives also represent new theoretical, analytical, and methodological advances in locating and specifying correspondences between symbol systems and social structures. Nevertheless, we find that pressing questions remain pertaining to how symbol systems and social structures interrelate, and how exactly this relationship shapes both cognition and action.

How did cultural factors participate in the event of October in Chile? How were these factors related to each other? What implications did they have for collective action and social life? The purpose of the article is to carry out a cultural reading of the October event. To do this, a dialogue is proposed between cultural sociology and cultural studies, applied to the October protest movement, resorting to interpretive research tools. The appropriation of Plaza Italia, in Santiago, by the protesters, is used in an illustrative way to highlight the cultural elements and their interactions. Among the findings, the production of meaning based on motifs and frames stands out, the production of its own symbolism and iconography and the deployment of performances that allow defining the Plaza itself as an artifact of protest. Then certain scopes of the above for civil society are discussed. It concludes with a projection of the work and a brief reflection on the relationship between social sciences and humanities to deploy an interpretive strategy of empirical research.

Abstract Purpose This paper studies the relationship between the impact factor (IF) and the number of journal papers in Chinese publishing system. Design/methodology/approach The method proposed by Huang (2016) is used whereas to analysis the data of Chinese journals in this study. Findings Based on the analysis, we find the following. (1) The average impact factor (AIF) of journals in all disciplines maintained a growth trend from 2007 to 2017. Whether before or after removing outlier journals that may garner publication fees, the IF and its growth rate for most social sciences disciplines are larger than those of most natural sciences disciplines, and the number of journal papers on social sciences disciplines decreased while that of natural sciences disciplines increased from 2007 to 2017. (2) The removal of outlier journals has a greater impact on the relationship between the IF and the number of journal papers in some disciplines such as Geosciences because there may be journals that publish many papers to garner publication fees. (3) The success-breeds-success (SBS) principle is applicable in Chinese journals on natural sciences disciplines but not in Chinese journals on social sciences disciplines, and the relationship is the reverse of the SBS principle in Economics and Education & Educational Research. (4) Based on interviews and surveys, the difference in the relationship between the IF and the number of journal papers for Chinese natural sciences disciplines and Chinese social sciences disciplines may be due to the influence of the international publishing system. Chinese natural sciences journals are losing their academic power while Chinese social sciences journals that are less influenced by the international publishing system are in fierce competition. Research limitation More implications could be found if long-term tracking and comparing the international publishing system with Chinese publishing system are taken. Practical implications It is suggested that researchers from different countries study natural science and social sciences journals in their languages and observe the influence of the international publishing system. Originality/value This paper presents an overview of the relationship between IF and the number of journal papers in Chinese publishing system from 2007 to 2017, provides insights into the relationship in different disciplines in Chinese publishing system, and points out the similarities and differences between Chinese publishing system and international publishing system.

Abstract. This study investigates the relationship between scholastic achievement (teacher-assigned grades) and cognitive abilities while explicitly modeling the multilevel structure of a large data set from an educational context. A multivariate analysis of composite scores in three subject domains (math and natural sciences, languages, and social sciences) was conducted using as predictors reasoning capacity, creativity, memory, and speed as well as student gender and type of school attended. The results showed meaningful differences in the relationships between the different abilities and school grades, and also significant contributions from student gender and school type. Specifically, reasoning capacity had the largest impact on achievement in math and natural sciences, whereas creativity explained more variability in performance for social sciences. Furthermore, girls outperformed boys. There was significant random variation in the intercepts at the between-classroom level, indicating that students sharing a common educational and ecological background tend to have more similar teacher-assigned grades when compared to students in other classrooms. Yet, there was no significant slope variation between the classrooms, which points to stable relationships between cognitive abilities and scholastic achievement.
