This paper explores the diversity, extraction, consumption and livelihood contribution of forest fruits among tribes in Bundu block of Ranchi district, Jharkhand. A multi-stage random sampling technique was employed to draw a sample of 164 households from 9 selected villages for field surveys. Data were collected through a structured interview, non-participant observation, key informant interview, focus group discussion, and market assessment. Simple descriptive statistics viz., frequency (f), percentage (%), mean (x), and range were applied to analyze the data. Results of the study revealed that 31 forest fruits harvested from 26 trees and 5 shrubs belonging to 28 genera and 21 families and consumed as ripe fruit (24) followed by pickle (9), vegetable (4), oilseed (3), roasted/boiled seed (3), drink (2), dehydrated unripe slices (1), fruit aril (1), fruit leather (1), kernel (1), sauce (1), soar product (1) and vinegar (1). Total extraction of forest fruits was 19312.60 kg/year, of which 70.37% was sold for cash income and the rest 29.63% were consumed for subsistence. Sale of forest fruits accrued an annual income of ₹ 246685.00 which contributed 3.90% of the total household annual income. Forest fruits constitute a key source of food, nutrition, subsistence, cash income and safety nets. Overharvesting of forest fruits to mitigate livelihood stress is likely to deplete their availability which would greatly affect the tribal welfare and food security. To promote forest fruit’s conservation, forest management should be harmonized with tribal development, poverty alleviation, food security, and livelihood sustainability strategies and thus, some additional policies will be required.

Abstract Since the plan of marble mining activity initiated which potentially exploiting the Rammang-Rammang karst and its contained biodiversity, the Salenrang local community draws an act of rejection and initiates to protect its local area through establishing Rammang- Rammang karst as a tourism object. After such an area became the main tourist destination, the district government began trying to be the dominating actor on the management of the area by planning to withdraw retribution which draws attention since such policy does not involve the local community participation as the main actor of the tourism site. This article aims to encourage the implementation of legal certainty for local communities as the main actor for community-based tourism (CBT) that will be given right to manage its own local resources which based from the participatory rights guaranteed in Law No. 32 Year 2009, to fulfill the right to live and to get benefit from its natural resources guaranteed in the constitution of Indonesia. This research utilizes normative legal research by obtaining data from literature study and case study from Rammang-Rammang karst area and its local community. The result shows that there is an absence of legal protection on the recognition of Salenrang local community as the primary manager of the Rammang-Rammang karst area which is essential to be enforced in order to implement the effort of community empowerment for sustainable tourism.

The Apatani, non-nomadic tribe, have evolved an ecologically sustainable system of rural forestry in Ziro Valley, a proposed heritage site of UNESCO. They have been using non-timber forest products (NTFPs) grown in homestead and nearby forests for a very long period. The present study was aimed at identification of priority NTFPs and uses, their availability status and availability trend, conservation need, and sustainability interventions. Qualitative methods of research like, exploratory survey, questionnaire survey, focus group discussion, semi-structured interview of key informants, etc. were employed for data collection. The Apatani used 112 priority NTFPs for food supplement, herbal medicine, house building material and other purposes. However, on the basis of ecological importance such NTFPs were categorized as very low, low, moderate, high, and very high vulnerable species. Twenty vulnerable species like Antiitari ayi (Actinidia callosa), Biiling (Choerospondias axillaris), Henchi (Rubus niveus), Jojuru ayi (Coccinia grandis), Ngiilyang Khiiko (Centella asiatica) etc. should be conserved and seventeen not vulnerable species at this stage like, Padii hamang (Cardamine hirsute), Sankhe (Quercus griffithii), Bije (Phyllostachys manii), Hiigu hamang (Oenanthe javanica), Kiira (Quercus dealbata ), etc. could be commercialized. However, a balance needed to be struck between commercialization and conservation by adopting a comprehensive policy based on scientific and traditional Apatani knowledge for harvesting and regeneration of NTFPs. Homegardening or community farming is recommended for sustainable supply of commercially important species to be domasticated.

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Plus (REDD+)  in Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP) East Java – Indonesia, is considered an essential collaborative program between the Indonesian government, International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), and surrounding local communities to mitigate climate change and global warming. In its implementation, community participation plays a significant role because they are impacted directly by REDD+, as stated in the Cancun Agreement and Anchorage Declaration of Indigenous Peoples on Climate Change. Therefore, this research focuses on the participation level and how it contributes to the program. This research used the community participation theory from Choguill and benefited from using mixed methods with a single case strategy. Data were gathered through a questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, and a literature study. The results uncovered that the participation level reached conciliation with the least support of three rungs as a degree of participation. At this stage, the local community and government started to realize their interests by supporting each other. Even so, the government had control in enforcing the decision-making process that involved the community in REDD+. In the end, government and stakeholders at the local and national scales should accelerate community participation through law enforcement and full community involvement in implementing REDD+.
