The density of mangrove cover is one of the factors that influence changes in shoreline both accretion and abrasion. This study aims to determine the effect of changes in density of mangrove cover on shoreline changes in 1989-2018 in the Coastal Province of Jambi. The method used is the interpretation of Landsat satellite images in 1989, 2000 and 2018 using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and overlaying images to see shoreline changes and DSAS (Digital Shoreline Analysis System) to calculate the area of change. The results showed that there had been a change in shoreline both accretion and abrasion in several locations that had different mangrove densities in the period 1989-2018. The results showed that accretion occured in 6 locations with an average change of Kota Sebrang 771 m, Tungkal Ilir 240.65 m, Kuala Betara 153.73 m, Mendahara 167.78 m, Kuala Jambi 169.35 m and Nipah 57.3 m, while abrasion occurs at 2 locations with an average change in Sabak Timur -41.8 m and Sadu -36.55 m. Where in the 6 locations that had accretion, mangrove density dominantly was in a close-densed and moderate state and only a few are in a low-densed condition. Meanwhile, the 2 locations that had abrasion were in a moderate state and have a low density mangrove forest.

The solid form of oil heavy metal waste is known as acid sludge. The aim of this research is to exercise the correlation between acid sludge concentration in soil and NDVI value, and further studying the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) anomaly by multi-temporal Landsat satellite images. The implemented method is NDVI. In this research, NDVI is analyzed using the remote sensing data on dry season and wet season. Between 1997 to 2012, NDVI value in dry season is around – 0.007 (July 2001) to 0.386 (May 1997), meanwhile in wet season NDVI value is around – 0.005 (November 2006) to 0.381 (December 1995). The high NDVI value shows the leaf health or thickness, where the low NDVI indicates the vegetation stress and rareness which can be concluded as the evidence of contamination. The rehabilitation has been executed in the acid sludge contaminated location, where the high value of NDVI indicates the successfull land rehabilitation effort.

Separation of different vegetation types in satellite images is a critical issue in remote sensing. This is because of the close reflectance between different vegetation types that it makes difficult segregation of them in satellite images. In this study, to facilitate this problem, different satellite derived vegetation indices including: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and Enhanced Vegetation Index 2 (EVI2) were derived from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and Landsat-5 TM data. The obtained NDVI, EVI, and EVI2 images were then analyzed and interpreted in order to evaluate their effectiveness to discriminate rice and citrus fields from ASTER and Landsat data. In doing so, the Density Slicing (DS) classification technique followed by the trial and error method was implemented. The results indicated that the accuracies of ASTER NDVI and ASTER EVI2 for citrus mapping are about 75% and 65%, while the accuracies of Landsat NDVI and Landsat EVI for rice mapping are about 60% and 65%, respectively. The achieved results demonstrated higher performance of ASTER NDVI for citrus mapping and Landsat EVI for rice mapping. The study concluded that it is difficult to detect and map rice fields from satellite images using satellite-derived indices with high accuracy. However, the citrus fields can be mapped with the higher accuracy using satellite-derived indices.

For agricultural development, water is the most important thing, so today farmers are looking for crops that have some degree of resistance to drought and high economic value such as pomegranate, however, there is poor literature on its production. The Crop Coefficient (Kc) helps us determine the water requirement during plant development, which is critical for reducing production costs and saving water. The objective of this study was to know the Kc during the phenological development of the pomegranate, in an orchard located in the municipality of Gómez Palacio, Durango, Mexico, using 8 Landsat satellite images and geographic information systems. The estimation of Kc based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), was performed as proposed by Calera (2016). The KC values obtained range from 0.33 to 0.65. Its evolution with satellite images is consistent according to the development stages of the crop. The relationship between the NDVI and KC may be a promising tool for farmers to estimate water use of pomegranate trees on a regional scale based on satellite imagery.

In Mediterranean mountain regions, traditional irrigation systems still persist in areas where the modernization approaches do not succeed in being operational. It is common that these systems alter the soil uses, vegetation distribution and hydrological natural regime.

This is the case of the extensive network of irrigation ditches in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range in southeastern Spain (an UNESCO Reserve of the Biosphere, with areas as Natural and National Park), which originated in Muslim times, and is still operational in some areas. These ditches have contributed to maintaining local agricultural systems and populations in basins dominated by snow conditions, and they constitute a traditional regulation of water resources in the area. The network is made up of two types of irrigation ditches: “careo” and irrigation ditches. The first, the "careo", collects the meltwater and infiltrates it along its course, maintaining a high level of soil moisture and favouring deep percolation volumes that can be later consumed by the population through springs and natural fountains. The second, the irrigation ones, are used to transport water from the natural sources to the agricultural plots downstream the mountain area. In 2014, several irrigation ditches were restored in the Natural Park. This is a chance to further explore and quantify the role of this network in the hydrological budget on a local basis.

The aim of this work is to evaluate to what extent the existence of these intermittent water networks affects the evolution of the surrounding vegetation. For this, one of the restored systems, the Barjas Ditch in the village of Cañar, with a successful water circulation along its way, was selected from the increase of the soil water content in the ditch influence area and, indirectly a differential development of vegetation. Two analyses are performed using remote sensing information. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI, which is a spectral index used to estimate the quantity, quality and development of vegetation that can therefore be used indirectly as an indicator of the state of soil moisture, was used as the indicator of evolution. For this purpose, a historical set of LandSat satellite images (TM, ETM+ and OLI) has been used. On the one hand, a global analysis on the whole mountainous range was carried out, comparing NDVI patterns in areas affected and non-affected by the ditches. On the other hand, the restored Barjas ditch is used to assess vegetation changes before and after the restoration.

ABSTRACT The use of satellite images as a complement in irrigation management constitutes a primordial basis in the decision-making process for irrigated agriculture. In this context, the present study aimed to monitor through Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) an irrigated sugarcane field belonging to the Mafambisse company, located at the District of Nhamatanda/Sofala, Republic of Mozambique, and establish its relationship with the crop coefficient established by FAO (kcFAO) and fit a regression model to estimate crop coefficient (kc) from the relationship between NDVI and kcFAO. The study was conducted using a series of Sentinel-2A/MSI images, relative to the period from October 2016 to October 2017. Based on the NDVI images generated, it was possible to monitor the sugarcane crop in the field and analyse the sensitivity of the index to its vegetative vigor. A similar pattern was observed between kcFAO profiles and NDVI values, which allowed the adjustment to be performed, demonstrating that this index is an alternative to obtain the crop coefficient.

Mapping and Quantification of Vegetation Cover from Central Agreste Region of Pernambuco State Using NDVI Technique ABSTRACTIn recent decades, advanced techniques for mapping and monitoring vegetation cover have been developed with the advent of remote sensing. New tools for digital processing, the generation of new sensors and their orbital distribution more accessible have facilitated the acquisition and use of satellite images, making them one of the products of remote sensing more used for analysis of the vegetation cover. The aim of this study was to assess the vegetation cover from Central Agreste region of Pernambuco State, using satellite images TM / LANDSAT-5. The images were processed using the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) technique, generating indexes used for classification of vegetation in dense, sparse and scattered. There was a proportion of 39.7% of dense vegetation, 13.6% of sparse vegetation, 14.3% of scattered vegetation and 10.5% of exposed soil. NDVI technique has been used as a useful tool in the classification of vegetation on a regional scale, however, needs improvement to a more precise differentiation among levels of clouds, shadow, exposed soils and vegetation. Abstract. Missaoui K, Gharzouli R, Djellouli Y, Messner F. 2020. Phenological behavior of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) forest to snow and precipitation variability in Boutaleb and Babors Mountains, Algeria. Biodiversitas 21: 239-245. Understanding the changes in snow and precipitation variability and how forest vegetation response to such changes is very important to maintain the long-term sustainability of the forest. However, relatively few studies have investigated this phenomenon in Algeria. This study was aimed to find out the response of Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica (Endl.) G.Manetti ex Carrière) forest in two areas (i.e Boutaleb and Babors Mountains) and their response to the precipitation and snow variability. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) generated from satellite images of MODIS time series was used to survey the changes of the Atlas cedar throughout the study area well as dataset of monthly precipitation and snow of the province of Setif (northeast of Algeria) from 2000 to 2018. Descriptive analysis using Standarized Precipitation Index (SPI) showed the wetter years were more frequent in the past than in the last two decades. The NDVI values changes in both areas with high values were detected in Babors Mountains with statistically significant differences. Our findings showed important difference in Atlas cedar phenology from Boutaleb mountains to Babors Mountains which likely related to snow factor.

Palavras-Chave: Assimetria flutuante, herbivoria, NDVI Taxa de Herbivoria em Espécies Arbóreas da Caatinga e o Uso do Índice de Vegetação por Diferença Normalizada (NDVI) como Indicador de Estresse em Planta ABSTRACT Plant species distributed on a landscape are submitted to a mosaic of abiotic conditions that may have a negative effect on development (generating stress) and expose them to predation by herbivores. This stress can cause additionally leaf asymmetry and a reduction on primary production. The photosynthetic rate, related to plant productivity, can be measured by spectral indexes, such as the NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), calculated from satellite images. In the present work, we test the hypothesis that environments with low primary productivity (low NDVI) will possess larger leaf asymmetry and higher herbivory rates. Our results show that in the Caatinga semi-arid region of Pernambuco, Brazil, the leaf asymmetry reduces with higher NDVI values, indicating a close relationship between this plant measure and the spectral index. On the other side, the correlation between herbivory and primary production or leaf asymmetry was not significant, suggesting that herbivores go beyond just selecting more stressed individuals. Keywords: Leaf asymmetry, NDVI, herbivory
