Objective: To determine the prevalence and causes of anemia in high school girls in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in high school girls aged 15-18 years old. Blood samples were collected for hematological parameters, iron profiles and blood smear examination. The recall 24-hour dietary data were collected using a questionnaire to determine and calculate daily iron intake. For purposes of the study, anemia was defined as hemoglobin (Hb) of <12 g/dL and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was defined as Hb of <12 g/dL with serum ferritin (SF) of <15 µg/L. Results: The results show that in 19 of a total of 227 subjects (8.3%) anemia was present. Iron deficiency was the main cause of anemia (13 of 19 cases) with a prevalence of 5.7%, while the prevalence of anemia due to other causes was 3.6% (6 of 19 cases). Iron deficiency without anemia was found in 36 cases (15.9%). Participants’ daily iron intake was less than the recommended 15 mg per day. Conclusion: The present study indicates that iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia in adolescent girls in Thailand. Health care programs in the schools should consider dietary behavior in order to reduce the prevalence of IDA in young women.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a serious significant public health problem, since it’s negative impact on physicaland psycological development, behavior and work capacity. There are many risk factors influencing the development of IDA.A cross-sectional study has been conducted in 301 Junior High School students at East Jakarta in January-February 2000.A structural questionnaire, physical, cell blood count (CBC) and Serum Iron ( SI ) examinations were performed. We foundsome of the many variables were connected with IDA by using bivariat analysis. Anemia was found in 41 out of 301 students(13,6%) and only 25 children (8.3%) suffered from IDA. Among 179 female students, only 33 children (18.5%) were anemicand 20 out of 33 (12.0%) have IDA. Bivariat analysis revealed a significant association between IDA with sex, parent’seducation, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) scores, and menstruation. It is concluded that the prevalence of IDA in thisstudy was lower than found in some previous studies in Indonesia. Gender, menstruation, low educated parents, and low FFQscores were risk factors for IDA.

Introduction: Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia among adolescent girls. The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women increased from 2013 to 2018, and females age 15-24 years had the highest prevalence of anemia. Therefore, knowing the baseline status of protein and iron intake —particularly animal-sourced protein as the main source of heme iron—is important to design future intervention program. Thus, this study was aimed to assess the protein and iron intake adequacy of High School girls in Depok, Indonesia. Methods: 211 girls from Senior High School in Depok, Indonesia participated in this study. Subjects were selected using a multi-stage random sampling method. A questionnaire was administered to obtain general characteristics.  Dietary intake data were obtained using a 3-day non-consecutive 24hr recall 1 weekend 2 weekdays interview. Anthropometric status was measured and calculated. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 20. Spearman’s correlation (significance p<0.05) was used to determine the factors related to protein and iron intake. Results: This population had inadequate intake of energy (97.2%), protein (59.7%), and iron (98.6%). However, intake of fat was higher than recommended in 59.2% of participants. Protein and iron intake were not correlated with age, father’s education, mother’s education, and the number of household member.

Anemia is commonly found in Indonesia especially in infants, children and adolescents. Adolescent  suffering a double burden of anemia including iron deficiency anemia and carriers of thalassemia. Iron deficiency anemia can affect brain function, growth and development process , and  weaken  the immune system. Thalassemia is a chronic disease passed down from parents to their children. The symptoms of these two diseases are very difficult to distinguish, namely  mild anemia and sometimes asymptomatic. The incidence of new cases needs to be controlled, one of them is by using screening tests and education to the community. This program was carried out in the form of increasing the knowledge of health workers, junior high school teachers and students regarding thalassemia and iron deficiency anemia regarding talasemia screening policy from the Health Ministry. The method used is survey, observation and socialization lecture. The results of this study showed an increase in knowledge of Tempuran Middle School students, teachers, and health workers after socialization of thalassemia. The voluntary level of students to join the anemia screening program was 81.89% in Combat 1 Junior High School, and 66.67% in Combat Middle School 2. The percentage of anemia in adolescent girls was 11.68%, while in boys it was 25.53%.

Background : Nutritional problems frequently experienced by adolescents is anemia. Anemia is a condition with blood hemoglobin levels were lower than normal as a result of the inability of tissues forming red blood cells in its production in order to maintain hemoglobin levels at normal levels. The prevalence of anemia in women age 15 and older, according to Riset Kesehatan Dasar in 2013 by 22.7%. Objective : The purpose of this study analyze the relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of iron deficiency anemia among high school students in Pakem. Method : This observational study using cross sectional approach, implemented in four high schools in the District of Pakem. The population in this study were students of class X and XI in four high school in Pakem. The independent variables were the nutritional status. The dependent variable is the iron anemia. Hemoglobin levels were measured by the method cyanmethemoglobin, weight was measured with a digital bathroom scales, height measured by microtoise. Data analysis used chi-square statistic. Conclusion : Based on the analysis proves that there is a relationship of nutritional status according to BMI / U with the incidence of iron deficiency anemia in high school in Pakem with p = 0.017.   Keywords: nutritional status , anemia , High School students
