Abstract: The recent historical-cultural process of globalization brings new challenges to societies, States and their institutions. The innovation and expansion of the techno-science, of information, communication and international trade transcend the borders of countries and cultures to assume planetary dimensions. The impact of this transformation has consequences for the productive sector, for the environment, health and education and also for churches and universities. In this article the author defends the thesis that in order to assess both the negative and the positive effects of this process on the population’s lives, a critical analysis must precede any conclusive affirmation. Will a globalized culture absorb the cultural identity of the various peoples? To what extent the populations worldwide will be able to take part in the new achievements? The Catholic universities must not fail toparticipate inthis task, sincethey, too, areaffected byglobalization.

New media has been the main force accelerating the development of globalizing society in the last two decades. With its digital, convergent, interactive, hypertextual, and virtual nature, new media has brought human interaction and society to a highly interconnected and complex level. The rapid transformation of human society due to the impact of the convergence of new media and globalization directly influences the construction and development of cultural identity. The emergence of new media and globalization not only breaks through the limit of the traditional time and space, but also may challenge the meaning of cultural identity. The purpose of this chapter is to unravel the intricate relationships between new media, globalization, and cultural identity through the process of definition, interpretation, and critical analysis.

This paper examines whether FDI generates productivity spillovers in Sri Lanka, using the annual data over the period from 1978 to 2015. The autoregressive distributed lag model has been estimated to investigate the effects of FDI, research and development, human capital, international trade, technological gap, rate of inflation, population growth and civil war on total factor productivity (TFP). The results reveal that FDI positively influences TFP. The results also confirm that research and development, human capital and international trade have positive effects. The findings suggest that Sri Lanka needs to increase investment in human capital and in research and development and needs to introduce policies to attract FDI inflows.

PurposeThis paper seeks to analyze empirically the net effect of trade openness on “economic culture”, measured by indicators of trust, respect, level of self‐determination, and obedience. Openness to international trade means that societies are more likely to be exposed to alternative attitudes, beliefs, ideas, and values leading to a Schumpeterian process of creative destruction whereby culture is destroyed on some margins and enhanced on others.Design/methodology/approachUsing data on trade openness from Quinn and Sachs and Warner, the paper empirically evaluates the impact of trade openness on economic culture. The paper's measure of culture is taken from Tabellini and Williamson and Kerekes, where data from the World Values Survey is aggregated to create a culture variable. The paper isolates the impact of trade policies on economic culture through a variety of empirical strategies including both panel and cross sectional analysis.FindingsThe central finding of the study is that a society's openness to international trade generates, on net, positive effects on economic culture. The more open a country is to trade, the more likely it is to possess culture conducive to economic interaction and entrepreneurship.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the existing literature by studying the impact of trade openness on culture. While previous studies have asked “Does culture affect economic outcomes?”, this paper explores the answer to the related question, “How does openness to trade affect culture?”.

International trade is characterized as highly dynamic: multiplechanges manifested in trade rapidly, constantly requiring responseto new challenges. This paper analyzes international trade-relatedchanges in three different ways. First, the paper discloses thetheories of economic growth. Second, it provides insights howtrade-related changes in some countries affect economics in othercountries through the transfer mechanism. Third, named a specificpotency of international trade to economy. To reveal the effectseconometric model is used. This model is applied to the workof twenty-four countries around the world. Based on the resultsof the regression analysis for the different 24 world countries, the period is defined during which the impact of internationaltrade is the strongest. Tarptautinė prekyba – sudėtingas dinamiškas socialinės ekonominės raidos reiškinys, jam būdingi daugialypiaipokyčiai. Trimis skirtingais aspektais analizuojami su tarptautinės prekybos pokyčiais susiję klausimai. Pirma, pristatomosžinomos ekonomikos augimo teorijos. Antra, pateikiamos įžvalgos dėl vienų šalių tarptautinės prekybos pokyčių perdavimokitoms šalims mechanizmo. Trečia, apibrėžtas konkretus tarptautinės prekybos poveikis ekonomikai. Remtasi ekonometriniumodeliu. Šis modelis darbe taikytas dvidešimt keturioms pasaulio šalims. Pagal skirtingų pasaulio šalių regresinės analizėsrezultatus nustatytas laiko periodas, per kurį tarptautinės prekybos poveikis ekonomikai buvo stipriausias.

The paper provides a critical analysis of the idea of technological unemployment. The overview of the existing literature on the employment effects of technological change shows that on the micro-level there exists strong and positive relationship between innovations and employment growth in firms; on the sectoral level this correlation becomes ambiguous; on the macro-level the impact of new technologies seems to be positive or neutral. This implies that fears of explosive growth of technological unemployment in the foreseeable future are exaggerated. Our analysis further suggests that new technologies affect mostly the structure of employment rather than its level. Additionally we argue that automation and digitalisation would change mostly task sets within particular occupations rather than distribution of workers by occupations.

The article assesses the impact of various factors on the growth rate of international trade. Many experts interpreted the cross-border flows of goods decline against the backdrop of a growing global economy as an alarming sign that indicates a slowdown in the processes of globalization. To determine the reasons for the dynamics of international trade, the decompositions of its growth rate were carried out and allowed to single out the effect of the dollar exchange rate, the commodities prices and global value chains on the change in the volume of trade. As a result, it was discovered that the most part of the dynamics of international trade is due to fluctuations in the exchange rate of the dollar and prices for basic commodity groups. The negative contribution of trade within global value chains in 2014 was also revealed. During the investigated period (2000—2014), such a picture was observed only in the crisis periods, which may indicate the beginning of structural changes in the world trade.

This study uses the DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) method to estimate the technical efficiency index of 34 Vietnamese commercial banks in the period 2007-2015, and then it analyzes the impact of income diversification on the operational efficiency of Vietnamese commercial banks through a censored regression model - the Tobit regression model. Research results indicate that income diversification has positive effects on the operational efficiency of Vietnamese commercial banks in the research period. Based on study results, in this research some recommendations forpolicy are given to enhance the operational efficiency of Vietnam’s commercial banking system.

Digitalization is a megatrend, but there is relatively little knowledge about its consequences for service work in general and specifically in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS). We studied the impact of digitalization on psychological consequences for employees in tax consultancies as a special case of KIBS. We compare two tax consulting jobs with very different job demands, those of tax consultants (TCs) and assistant tax consultants (ATCs). The results show that the extent of digitalization at the workplace level for ATCs correlates significantly positively with their job satisfaction. For TCs, the same variable correlates positively with their work engagement. These positive effects of digitalization are mediated in the case of ATCs by the impact on important job characteristics. In the case of TCs, which already have very good working conditions, the impact is mediated by the positive effect on self-efficacy. Theoretical and practical consequences of these results are discussed.

In today’s world of swiftly increasing global economy and continuously changing international trade laws and technology exchange rate plays a pivotal role in the production, price formation, export and import of agricultural products. For many years exchange rate as an integral part of agricultural economics has been ignored. The present study was intended to investigate exchange rate as an impacting factor on the agricultural production. It also considers the researches that have been carried about the impact of the exchange rate on prices and export of agricultural products, theirs analyses and how much impact it has in the situation of Uzbekistan.
