The article examines the scientific and poetic creativity of the outstanding Russian philologist Mikhail Viktorovich Panov. The author analyses Panov’s ideas formulated in the course of lectures on the language of Russian poetry, emphasizing that, for Panov, the development of the Russian poetic language relies on the movement of poetic forms embodied at the level of phonetics, verbal and figurative series of literary works. The dynamics of poetic form is determined by poets’ desire to search for new and unexpected forms of poetic language; however, this search frequently follows the path of repeating familiar poetic formulas or their conscious displacement (shift). Panov-the researcher finds a scheme or matrix for describing a wide variety of poetic trends and styles, offering a scientific classification of poetic techniques. However, having a poetic talent, Panov was able to discover poetry in science, which he adored. The author of the article analyses several of Panov’s poems about life and war (of which he was a participant), about science and scientists. Linguistics and scientific ideas formulated by linguists became heroes of Panov’s poetry. Therefore, Panov’s work intertwined the approach of both a scientist and a poet: he finds science in poetry and poetry in science.

The quality and content of information in the article media text is based on scientific classification of linguistic features. The study of functional styles of speech, the identification of their linguistic signs, the discovery of the functional properties of linguistic units and their separation on the basis of linguistic facts is one of thetasks that modern linguistics is waiting for a solution. Text Linguistics, which deals with the creation, modeling of its structure and the study of the process of such activity, is of interest to journalists today as a science.

Robson in 1983 and 1988 in his reconsideration of the poetics of kakawin epics and Javanese philology drew readers’ attention to the importance of genre for the history of ancient Javanese literature. Aoyama in his study of the kakawin Sutasoma in 1992, making judicious use of Hans Jauss’s concept of “horizon of expectation”, offered the first systematic discussion of the genre of Old Javanese literary works. The present essay offers a commentary on the terms which mpu Monaguna and mpu Prapañca, authors of the thirteenth century epic kakawin Sumanasāntaka and the fourteenth century Deśawarṇana, themselves, employ to refer to the generic characteristics of their poems. Mpu Monaguna referred to his epic poem as a narrative work (kathā), written in a prakṛt, Old Javanese, and rendered in the poetic form of a kakawin and finally as a ritual act intended to enable the poet to achieve apotheosis with his tutelary deity and his poem to be the means of transforming the world, in particular to ensure the wellbeing of the readers, listeners, copyists and those who possessed copies of his poetic work. Mpu Prapañca described his Deśawarṇana differently. Also written in Old Javanese and in the poetic form of a kakawin—he refers to his work variously as a narrative work (kathā), a chronicle (śakakāla or śakābda), a praise poem (kastawan) and also as a ritual act designed to enable the author in an ecstatic state of rapture (alangö), and filled with the power and omniscience of his tutelary deity, to ensure the continued prosperity of the realm of Majapahit and to secure the rule of his king Rājasanagara. The essay considers each of these literary categories.

The aim of the study is to describe the titles of Latvian metal music albums, from the perspective of content, by identifying the common and distinctive character of the metallic music tradition, and perhaps even the local one. Of 241 album titles (data on Dec. 31, 2019), most are in English, some in French, Latin, Russian, some consisting of digits, and 69 titles in Latvian. These titles are the subject of the research. The main source is Encyclopaedia Metallum (www.metal-archives.com), which still does not reflect the current situation concerning Latvian metal music. Album titles in this study are viewed separately from album designs and song titles and are analysed from the perspective of content. The album title is an important part of the work that has been issued because it is an element that makes the audience/buyer pay attention to the album because it must not be forgotten that today the album is also an item that you want to sell. In general, it can be concluded that Latvian metal musicians, with their album titles in Latvian, are mostly following world trends, as evidenced by the integration in the researcher Deena Weinstein’s classification of Dionysian discourse and discourse on chaos. Most titles are more relevant to the discourse on chaos because the thematic circle of chaos is wider. Latvian mythology, along with history, is an up-to-date source for the creative work of bands that is responsible for the local feeling of the titles. A large enough number are titles that are difficult to fit in the Weinstein’s division and form the third group with philosophical titles and simply all sorts of titles. If the philosophical titles follow the world’s trends, the simple titles include the names of the events, tributes, and the titles of literary works, which give them a local character.

The article presents reflections on the book Roman Osipovich Yakobson [Avtonomova, Baran, Shchedrina (eds.) 2017], published in the series Philosophy of Russia of the First Half of the 20th Century, which contains critical analytical works on the theoretical heritage of the outstanding linguist and humanities of 20th century. The problems of the articles are considered in the current contexts of the humanities and in the prospects of contemporary philosophical discussions. Particular attention is paid to such topics as poetic, language, structure, local development, structuralism, creativity, subjectivity. The creative presence of Jacobson’s ideas in the humanitarian knowledge of the 20th–21th centuries shown in the interaction of scientific ideas and in the dialogues of scientific and national and cultural traditions. This confirms the universal responsiveness of the ideas of an outstanding scientist, which most of all testifies to the demand for his views in the interdisciplinary space of philosophical and humanitarian reflection: the holistic coverage of the material and the desire for theoretical integrity from the very beginning were in the center of attention of Jacobson. The publication of the collection carefully studied the basic constants of the theoretical heritage of Jacobson – shows interdisciplinarity in action. The methodological gesture inherent in Jacobson’s research outlines and substantiates the most important trend in the formation and transformation of knowledge of the 20th and 21st centuries – the growing importance of conceptual interactions and topological aspirations of thought. These qualities of reflection contain a path to the existential, anthropological, aesthetic and ethical aspects of life: freedom of co-creation and freedom of existence can only be determined against the background of symbolic determinations – the human language, first of all.

This research aims to classify and describe the material culture elements contained in Okky Madasari’s novel Entrok. The research problem includes the classification of material culture elements which only exist in Indonesia, and most of them are related to Javanese culture. This research was a qualitative descriptive research. The data were in the form of words and phrases obtained from Okky Madasari’s Entrok. The result showed that there were six elements of material culture. The most commonly found material culture element was food, the second was house, the third was clothes, and the least found were vehicle, daily equipment, and art tool. The use of material culture elements in literary works, such as novel, not only improves the aesthetic value of the work, but also can be used as a media of education, so that the literary work enthusiasts can recognize better and are able to preserve the cultures in Indonesia.

The article is devoted to the study of terminological inconsistencies in the classification of literary works. The research materials are literary dictionaries and encyclopedias, as well as a number of works on the theory of literature. The purpose of the work is to consider various classifications and categorizations, as well as the problems of terminological definitions of a novel as a type of a genre. In the course of the analysis, a terminological discrepancy was identified in the classification for the genus, types and genres at the level of translation. Accuracy and clarity of terminological definitions is not always possible, however, the systematization of terminology is important for science.

This chapter looks at Hans Blumenberg's “Speech Situation and Immanent Poetics” (1966), which focuses on poetic language. The three basic ideas of the relationship between language and thought should help one gain a certain orientation to determine the function of poetic language. After all, an immanent poetics will by necessity depend on examining the function of a work's language. The explication of the immanent poetics of a work will therefore depend on asking the “right” questions with regard to this work's language. Of course, hints can be derived from the author's exogenous poetics, from his self-testimony and self-observation, if this is indeed what they are and not simply the “offshoot” of a normative theory of art. This methodical preliminary question deserves not to be passed over. Already the classification of a text by its author as “self-observation” during the process of aesthetic production expresses a certain aesthetic position. This position permits experience to provide relevant information about the process of a work's emergence.

A complex network as an abstraction of a language system has attracted much attention during the last decade. Linguistic typological research using quantitative measures is a current research topic based on the complex network approach. This research aims at showing the node degree, betweenness, shortest path length, clustering coefficient, and nearest neighbourhoods’ degree, as well as more complex measures such as: the fractal dimension, the complexity of a given network, the Area Under Box-covering, and the Area Under the Robustness Curve. The literary works of Mexican writers were classify according to their genre. Precisely 87% of the full word co-occurrence networks were classified as a fractal. Also, empirical evidence is presented that supports the conjecture that lemmatisation of the original text is a renormalisation process of the networks that preserve their fractal property and reveal stylistic attributes by genre.

AbstractShakespeare’s works have been translated many times throughout different historical eras, and these translations vary considerably both in their poetic form and in their cognitive underpinnings. This paper investigates the cognitive and poetic differences between three translations of Shakespeare’s sonnet XC: a 19th-century translation by F. A. Gelbcke (Gelbcke 1867), a translation by Paul Celan (Celan 1967) and a translation by A. Thalmayr (Thalmayr 1985). In particular, the use of conceptual metaphor across all versions is compared, and it is established that primary conceptual metaphors tend to remain intact across translations whereas complex conceptual metaphors tend to be replaced by different complex metaphors specific to the era and cultural background of the respective translators. This observation has broader implications for metaphor theory in general: Cross-linguistic studies of literary translations may be useable as a metric for the basic-ness or universality of metaphors. The poetic form variation found in the translations reflects the variation in metaphor material, and the mechanisms of foregrounding and parallelism postulated for poetic language by formalist poetics are shown to be useful for investigating the phenomenon of translation.
