The recommended model of teaching Englishfor students of non-English department is collaborativeteaching which provides subject lecturer‘s involvementin the curriculum design. This paper reported theprocess of designing a syllabus of collaborative teachingfor ESP teaching in Indonesian context. As a part ofcurriculum design, this ESP syllabus focuses on contentarea reading in the area of physics. Several text typescommonly used in physics department and vocabularybuilding of academic word lists and the ones related tophysics area study were elaborated as well. This study was aimed to identify the informality of request as politeness strategies used by the students of English Education study Program (English department) of Unrika Batam.The data was obtained from request spoken by the student of English department students. The data taken based on cluster sampling due the homogeneous data. The data was students of morning class of semester seven. This study concluded that The usage of bu, ma, mah (means mother)  five data and yah, pak, and pa (means father or daddy), the speaker respects to the hearer’s face by addressing her as mom. This considered her position is upper position; this does not threaten her face. This is used informally to her mother in relaxed situation. The usage of imperative sentences are four data when the hearer asks her young sister  to take the glass, then the subject asks her big sister to buy her dress, when she asks her young sister to take chilly and when the subject ask the money to pay rental house. This sentences forces her face’s hearer. This shows negative face. The last is speaker states “adek” young sister to her father means to soften request to her father due to the father will usually fulfill the young child.

This article provides information about a research aiming to identify causes of secondary school students’ failure to acquire English effectively and provide recommendations to relevant ministries to better deal with these problems.  A qualitative design involving a number of students as well as teachers from lower and upper secondary schools and pre-service teachers from a training college was used. Findings of this research revealed that issues of English teacher quality, English study program graduates’ quality, lack of English learning hours at school, the absence of extra-curricular activities for English exposure and English speaking environment, English national exam, the underuse and inexistence of facilities and ineffective monitoring system were found to be the major contributors of students’ English learning ineffectiveness. This study, therefore, recommends the relevant ministries to cope with these issues urgently or else this unfavorable situation will remain unchanged in future years.     Keywords: English, teaching, learning, quality, policy, change

The main objective of this study is to identify students' perceptions of the implementation of socrative learning grammar. The second-year students of the English Department of FKIP UIR in the academic year 2018/2019 were the objects of this research. Questionnaires and interviews as a tool to collect data for this study. The questionnaire was adapted from the TAM theory (David, Bagozzi & Warshaw, 1989) which included 20 closed questions relating to the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of using socrative in learning grammar. The data in this study was analyzed using quantitative and qualitative analysis. While data from the interview were transcribed. The results of this study indicated that students have positive perceptions about the use of socrative. The results of this study also proved that students have a positive view of the use of socrative in learning grammar. This means that they accept the use of socrative in the learning process

This study aims at comparing the TOEFL scores of the English Department students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Cenderawasih University. The questions that need to be answered are first, whether there are any differences of TOEFL scores amongst English department students from different semesters. Secondly, whether there are any different scores between male and female students, third between the students with different learning backgrounds, and forth between students with different levels of interest in English. The participants are the students of semester 2, semester 4, semester 6, and semester 8, commencing in the academic year 2017/2018. TOEFL prediction test was given to the participants to get the scores. The scores of each variable were then compared by the application of ANOVA and t-test.  The result of this study can give a picture of how English teaching can be improved.

This study aims to measure the correlation between vocabulary achievements and speaking achievement at second semester students of English study program in Halu Oleo University. The design of the study was research deign or correlational design; the type of the study was quantitative approach. The problem of the study was, is there any correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English study program in Halu Oleo University? The population of this research was the second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University in the academic year of 2018/2019 with a total number of 120 students. It was divided into two class they are A and B. There are 105 students taken as sample in this study by using purposive sampling technique.  The instruments of this research are mid test score of vocabulary examination and basic speaking Examination. The result of calculation using SPSS 20 program found that, (r (105) = 0.459, p = 0.000) was also higher than r at 5% and 1% significant level. It could be concluded that alternative hypothesis (H1 table) stating that there is a significant positive correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University and null hypothesis rejected. Based on the research findings, it is shown that there is positive correlation between vocabulary achievement and speaking achievement at second semester students of English Department in Halu Oleo University. It means that students’ who had much vocabulary performed speaking better than the student who had lack of vocabulary.

<p>The study is intended to develop Writing III Course materials using graphic organizers for the fourth-semester students of English Education Study Program of IAIN Palangka Raya. The Research and Development (R &amp; D) design was employed in this study. It included the stages:  need analysis, description of the purpose, selection and development of material type, production of proto-material, production of pedagogical material, expert validation, field testing (trying-out), evaluation and revision (evaluation from try-out and the expert, and final product. The final product of this study was the instructional materials (six units for nine meetings) covering introduction to the essay (unit 1 for meetings 1-4), the illustration essay (unit 2 for meeting 5), the classification essay (unit 3 for meeting 6), the process essay (unit 4 for meeting 7), the comparison contrast essay (unit 5 for meeting 8), and the cause and effect (unit 6 for meeting 9). Each unit consisted of learning objective, topic, sub-topic, description, relevancy, and keywords. The materials serve for appropriate topics, clear models, stimulating learning, relevant activities, clear example, graphic organizers, and providing strategies.</p><em></em>

The needs analysis cannot be separated from the development of materials and curriculum design for language learning, especially ESP. The research about ESP, especially the topic of need analysis still needs to be explored. Thus, this research aims to identify language skills needed and develop English teaching materials at Politeknik Gihon. The subjects of this study were 45 ongoing students and six former students. The result of the study revealed the perceptions of the students’ needs for their current studies and future career and how the English material should be designed in this institution. This study contributes in developing the teaching material and proposed a redesigned of ESP course.

This study was conducted to identify the kinds of errors in surface strategy taxonomy and to know the dominant type of errors made by the fifth semester students of English Department of one State University in Malang-Indonesia in producing their travel writing. The type of research of this study is document analysis since it analyses written materials, in this case travel writing texts. The analysis finds that the grammatical errors made by the students based on surface strategy taxonomy theory consist of four types. They are (1) omission, (2) addition, (3) misformation and (4) misordering. The most frequent errors occuring in misformation are in the use of tense form. Secondly, the errors are in omission of noun/verb inflection. The next error, there are many clauses that contain unnecessary phrase added there.Keywords: Error, Error Analysis, Surface Strategy Taxonomy, Travel Writing

The study aims at knowing the use of technology in teaching learning process of pre-service teachers of English Study Program of Universitas PGRI Semarang. The subjects of the study are the eight semester students which are Pre-service teachers of the English Study Program of Universitas PGRI Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019. The instrument used in the study is questionnaire. The techniques used in the study are sharing the questionnaire to the eight semester students through WhatsApp to know what kinds of technology used by them are and interview to know how their perception of the use of technology in teaching learning process is. The qualitative data are analyzed by reducing the data, classifying the data and drawing conclusion. The result of the study shows that Pre-service teachers tend to use same kinds of technology in teaching learning process, and they have an opinion that technology is really important for the teachers and for students.

This research discusses about English for specific purposes in particular integration of the methods and learning design in aircraft maintenance engineering subject for cadets in Aviation Polytechnic of Surabaya. Aviation Polytechnic of Surabaya has some specific curricullum of each study programs. The curriculum depends on the major of each study programs. The researchers concern for aircraft maintenance engineering study program in aviation english subject to be researched. The researchers interested to explain the vocabulary subject in Aviation English by deviding into 4 groups, this research offers an example passage of how this can be done and evaluated the passage. Requirements analysis is made and the curriculum is presented on the teaching of vocabulary subject in Aviation English using observation and comparison methods, so the cadets can get and learn the aircraft engineering subject in theory and practice effectively in the classroom and apply it in the world of work. The results of this research is to analyze the progress of the cadets skill using these designs or methods by practicing and exploring their knowledge, we can see the table result of each group in this paper. The cadets can learn many vocabularies and understand the curriculum design of aircraft maintenance engineering subject in Aviation English and organize the material for learning that is appropriate to current conditions.
