Pre-service teachers’ limited understanding toward learner autonomy affects how they develop their own and their students’ autonomy. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal: (1) the pre-service teachers’ perception on the role of the teachers and students in learner autonomy; (2) the pre-service teachers’ activity on their own learner autonomy as a learner in teacher training school. 25 respondents were surveyed to acquire their perception. It was found that the pre-service teachers assumed that the teachers should hold the dominant role and be responsible to the learning results. Not only to that, the pre-service teachers still focused on exam-oriented activity; learning only from material given by the teacher in order to pass the exam. Due to that perception, their autonomous learning did not properly develop, as they prefer teacher-centered method. To deal with these findings, the pre-service teachers should not orientate on passing the exam, but rather on the progress as learning is a process not only the result.

Keywords: Learner Autonomy, Pre-Service Teachers, Perception

SummaryInitial teacher training in England and Wales is radically reformed since the 2010 year. Many new ways of training were introduced, namely: School-Centered Initial Teacher Training, School Direct, apprenticeship, Teach First, Troops to Teachers and others. The role of universities in teacher training is severe diminished with many implications for the quality of teachers and teaching as well as for the identity of academic teachers, their role and the lack of stability. Of course those changes have a lot of implications for universities, especially for their Schools of Education. Some of them disappeared.

The global language teaching community has largely spotlighted students’ autonomous learning for the last few decades. Through the thorough review of the existing literature on learner autonomy, this article aims to theoretically investigate this concept as well as clearly specify the roles played by teachers and students in an autonomy-oriented classroom. Autonomous learning is not at all synonymous with the absolute elimination of teacher’s role and learner-learner relationships. In fact, language instructors need to comprehend their roles in a multidimensional way, and students are supposed to be responsibly active for their own learning process as well as positively interdependent for academic cooperation.

This study explores the perceptions and practices of the English language teachers to create autonomous learning environment in the context of Nepalese secondary EFL classroom. The study further unpacks the role of the teachers in creating better learning opportunities for learners so as to promote learner autonomy. The research is based on interpretive paradigm to look into kaleidoscopic view of variety of perspectives, classroom practices and emerging dilemmas of the teachers. Based on the findings, the research showcases the deep rooted social practices and myths to bring tensions in the relation between teachers and students. The school environment has to be homely and autonomy supportive. It seems pertinent to think over the concept of learner autonomy globally and act locally adapting the global trends and issues of teaching and learning, and at the same time, there is a dire need to remain mindful of the translated concept of learner autonomy thinking contextually and pragmatically.

ABSTRACTThis study aims at investigating: (1) levels of autonomous learning from three groups of students with different periods of study, (2) EFL students’ beliefs towards learner autonomy and their lecturers’ roles in promoting learner autonomy. The participants of this study were three groups of EFL students at English Department in their second, fourth, and sixth semesters. The data were obtained through questionnaire surveying Autonomous Learning Scale to find out the students’ levels of autonomy and interview to figure out their beliefs about learner autonomy and the roles of lecturers to promote autonomous learning. This study revealed that all group of students were classified as being in the mediate level of autonomy. From the interviews conducted to nine participants representing each group, it was found that to become autonomous, learners need to develop the ability to evaluate their own learning. Moreover, out-of-class activities were believed to enhance learner autonomy since the activities will provide students with self-responsibility to manage the tasks. Last, in terms of the lecturers’ roles in the classroom, most participants perceived that the lecturers still had a dominant role in controlling teaching and learning, particularly in the classroom context. How to Cite: Hermagustiana, I., Anggriyani, D. (2019). The overall development of technology has also contributed to the development of multimedia technology and its greater application in education. The curriculum cannot be viewed separately in relation to the changes taking place in modern society and in relation to its technological progress. Teaching methods, techniques and tools are constantly changing and in modern pedagogy they are more efficient and stimulating for the acquisition of knowledge. In traditional teaching, the role of teachers and students differs significantly, the teacher has a dominant role of lecturer, while students have a passive role in the process of acquiring knowledge. Teaching conceived in this way changed with the development of technology, because the teacher is no longer the only source of knowledge and information, and students are not passive objects that absorb that knowledge. Our goal is to review the importance and efficiency of multimedia education by reviewing the relevant literature. As first, we will try to define the concept of multimedia and analyze the theoretical basis of multimedia education, as well as its application in teaching. We start from the assumption that since technology simplifies functioning in general, it contributes to simplifying and improving the education process.

This article discusses how to shift the role of teachers and how Islamic education shapes the character of students in the midst of the current 4.0 industrial revolution. The shift in the role of teachers from previously being teacher centered and then becoming facilitators causes a change in the learning orientation paradigm to become student centered. The process of attracting teachers and students in shaping student character is not optimal as in the teacher centered position, it could be because the teachers are no longer free or have more space. Therefore, this shift has implications for the creation of a character crisis for students. The student character crisis has recently become a problem that is busy being discussed and faced by the world of education. It could be because the existence of Islamic education which is thick with a traditional approach (teacher oriented) is no longer considered a solution in the new student-oriented paradigm to shape the character of religious students. Even though the research results explain that the success in shaping the character of students through Islamic religious education has been created through various extra-curricular activities. Because of that, the teacher's ability to insert character values in the learning process, both in intra-curricular and extra-curricular activities is a solution as well as an affirmation that Islamic education is one way of building the character of religious students

In recent years there has been an increased appreciation of the interrelationship between learner autonomy and teacher autonomy, both in the classroom and in the self-access centre. One obvious impact on learners’ autonomy is their teachers’ understanding of what autonomy means, and their ability to implement it in the classroom. Especially for beginning teachers, knowledge of learner autonomy is likely to be shaped in large part by the professional training they receive and the amount of attention given to the topic during their teacher education. It is therefore important to ask to what extent teacher training courses prepare teachers for fostering autonomy, including those teachers working in self-access centres. This study attempts to answer that question by critically investigating a range of popular teacher training course materials widely used in professional programmes worldwide. We apply an evaluative framework to identify 1) what information teachers are given about learner autonomy, and 2) the extent to which the materials cover the teaching of different skills for independent learning. Perhaps surprisingly, despite the growing interest in autonomy, it was found that the selected books included almost no information about learner autonomy at all and did not, with one or two minor exceptions, focus on the development of skills for supporting autonomous learning.

This study investigates the overall use of project-based work in enhancing Moroccan high school students’ autonomous learning and attenuating their being over-reliant on teachers. It was observed, in two Moroccan high schools, -where the study was carried out-, as is the case in many other English foreign language contexts, that students were generally unable to learn by themselves, and that teachers were the solemn imparters of knowledge and learners were merely passive receivers of that knowledge. The study involved a sample of 30 students from science stream belonging to two adjacent high schools, which are located in a big city in Morocco. In the absence of a standard framework on how to implement project-based work properly, effective ways on how project work can improve independent learning proved useful in this study. In order to collect data for the study, three major instruments were employed, involving students and teachers, namely observation, interviews, and survey questionnaires. The data analysis highlighted the importance of project-based strategy in boosting students’ autonomous learning, through analyzing interview excerpts of teachers’ and students’ experience with the concept The research findings revealed that teachers assigned projects for students but did not identify each student’s role within a group, which deepened students’ disorientation, and reinforced sheer dependence on the teachers. The interviews showed as well the difficulties teachers encountered when assigning projects. This study is but a roadmap to teachers who are willing to increase students’ autonomy and improve the quality of the teaching-learning situation. The study also identifies the role of the teacher and the stages that should be followed to a better achievement of results.
