Electrically responsive biomaterials are an important and emerging technology in the fields of biomedical and material sciences. A great deal of research explores the integral role of electrical conduction in normal and diseased cell biology, and material scientists are focusing an even greater amount of attention on natural and hybrid materials as sources of biomaterials which can mimic the properties of cells. This review establishes a summary of those efforts for the latter group, detailing the current materials, theories, methods, and applications of electrically conductive biomaterials fabricated from protein polymers and polysaccharides. These materials can be used to improve human life through novel drug delivery, tissue regeneration, and biosensing technologies. The immediate goal of this review is to establish fabrication methods for protein and polysaccharide-based materials that are biocompatible and feature modular electrical properties. Ideally, these materials will be inexpensive to make with salable production strategies, in addition to being both renewable and biocompatible.

Abstract The appearance of a complex between tyrosine-phosphorylated insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1) and PI3K in a high-speed pellet fraction (HSP) is thought to be a key event in insulin action. Conversely, the disappearance of the IRS-1/PI3K complex from this fraction has been linked to insulin desensitization. The present study examines the role of 14-3-3, a specific phospho-serine binding protein, in mediating the disappearance of IRS-1 from the HSP after insulin treatment. An in vitro pull-down assay using recombinant 14-3-3 revealed that insulin enhances the association of 14-3-3 with IRS-1 in cultured adipocytes and that this is completely inhibited by wortmannin. An association of IRS-1 and 14-3-3 was also observed and was maximal after stimulation by insulin, when endogenous proteins were immunoprecipitated. Epidermal growth factor (EGF), 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate, and okadaic acid, other agents that cause serine/threonine phosphorylation of IRS-1, also stimulated IRS binding to 14-3-3. The enhancement of IRS-1 binding to 14-3-3 by insulin was accompanied by movement of IRS-1 and the p85 subunit of PI3K from the HSP to the cytosol. In keeping with a key role of 14-3-3 in mediating this redistribution of IRS-1, the complexes of IRS-1 and 14-3-3 were found in the cytosol but not in the HSP of insulin-treated cells. In addition, colocalization of IRS-1 and 14-3-3 was observed in the cytoplasm after insulin treatment by confocal microscopy. Finally, the addition of a phosphorylated 14-3-3 binding peptide to an adipocyte homogenate (to remove 14-3-3 from IRS-1) increased the abundance of IRS-1/PI3K complexes in the HSP and decreased their abundance in the cytosol. These findings strongly suggest that 14-3-3 participates in the intracellular trafficking of IRS-1 by promoting the displacement of serine-phosphorylated IRS-1 from particular structures. They also suggest that 14-3-3 proteins could play an integral role in the process of insulin desensitization.

Purpose: A company’s capital structure is a blend of its equity and debt financing and is considered a significant factor in the valuation of any firm. The decisions related to capital structure formation play an integral role for the firms, therefore; this research tends to explore the factors of capital structure and their impact on firm performance. For this purpose, financial data for different listed companies in PSX has been gathered, and dividends and taxes are used as firm external factors.  Design/Methodology/Approach: To examine the impact, the panel data has been used for the period 2016-2020 and panel least square has been applied. Findings: The findings suggest that among the variables current ratio, dividends, taxation, total debt to total equity ratio, and the firm size are statistically significant to profitability. The study also concludes that dividends and tax have a greater impact on capital structure and firm performance.   Implications/Originality/Value: Managers and owners of the firms must make sure that their profits are used for future investments rather than payment of debts to avoid bankruptcy.

ABSTRACT Patient and family–centred care (PFCC) is an approach to health care that recognizes the integral role of the family and encourages mutually beneficial collaboration between the patient, family and health care professionals. Specific to the pediatric population, the literature indicates that the majority of families wish to be present for all aspects of their child's care and be involved in medical decision-making. Families who are provided with PFCC are more satisfied with their care. Integration of these processes is an essential component of quality care. This article reviews the principles of PFCC and their applicability to the pediatric patient in the emergency department; and it discusses a model for integrating PFCC that is modifiable based on existing resources.

The journalistic profession has long since entered an age where technology and audience participation are two of its most defining factors. Changes that were brought about by the advent of WEB 2.0 transformed journalism – among other professions – fundamentally, and opened the gates to a more connected future, one in which the lines between content producer and content consumer are far less defined than they used to be. One of the more promising technologies of this new era is that of chatbots and conversational agents. These multifaceted programs have proven to be extremely useful in many aspects of modern journalism, with some of them getting used in scenarios that go as far as trying to replace the traditional role of the journalist as we know it. As such, the influence of these programs has also spread to the field of audience interaction and participatory journalism. This article aims to underline the integral role that chatbots play within the confines of the journalistic profession, while at the same time explore the significant effects they have in the field of audience participation and communication between the journalist and the public in general. To achieve this goal a model chatbot was created in order to demonstrate the benefits of automating the process of filing and transferring a report on account of the public to the news organization.

This chapter focuses on three specific factors pivotal to the emergence of sexology in Germany during this time: the vaunted status and increasingly important political role of science and medicine; the growth of a discourse on modernity and its effects, above all on health and morality; and the expansion of variegated reform movements and their increasing reliance on science to support their demands and visions for change. It then illuminates the integral role sex reform groups played in creating, collecting, curating, and circulating sexual scientific knowledge, and especially highlights the roles women played in building sexology as a field of knowledge—as well as the opposition their involvement increasingly provoked.

This chapter discusses the ways in which the U.S. government created an alternative archive when it recorded Mexicanas/os' voices in the "official" record during land grant adjudication proceedings in the mid- to late nineteenth century. The testimonio of landowner María Cleofas Bóne de López serves as a prime focus in the chapter to emphasize the ways in which marriage to Mexican women was one way that both Anglo and Mexican men gained access to and amassed material property. Through this and other key cases, the chapter emphasizes that males' land ownership was often predicated on relationships to and with Mexican women and the ways Mexican men were effeminized within the U.S. legal system. The depositions serve as testimonials to the integral role of gender in the history of property ownership and dispossession.
