scholarly journals A Correlational Study on Mindset, Grit, and Adversity Quotient of Pre-Service Teachers: Evidence in Philippines and Hongkong

Understanding pre-service teachers' mindset, grit, and adversity quotient boosts their morale, confidence, and self-esteem as future educators. This descriptive-correlational research determined the relationship between the aforementioned constructs of pre-service teachers in the Philippines and Hong Kong. The respondents of the study were 155 pre-service teachers from two Asian countries. The data were gathered through answering an online questionnaire generated through Google forms and disseminated through e-Mail and messenger on social networking sites. The responses from the respondents were automatically stored at the Google drive application. The standardized questionnaires were used in the study. The respondent's mindset was assessed using Dweck's Mindset Instrument (DMI). In terms of grit, it was measured using Duckworth's Grit-Short Scale, and the respondent's adversity quotient was examined using The Adversity Quotient Profile® 9.1 by Dr. Paul G. Stoltz. The majority of the pre-service teachers in the two Asian countries are dominated by female students with an ideal age bracket suited as university students possessing a growth mindset. Students with a growth mindset have displayed a higher level of grit and adversity quotients than those students with a fixed mindset. This study concluded that mindset and adversity quotient is significantly associated. Hence, stakeholders involved in the development of 21st-century learners should promote the mindset, but they may also develop other essential parallel variables, such as the adversity quotient, to encourage them to be desirable attribution necessary for being global and competitive citizens of the society.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether problematic social networking site (SNS) use (i.e., degree of dependent relationship with SNSs), total SNS time/day, total SNS friends, and specific SNS activities were related to body image (BI), self-esteem (SE), and eating disorder (ED) symptoms/concerns. A sample of young adults ( N = 147) completed an online survey which measured SNS usage, problematic SNS use, BI, SE, and ED symptom/concerns. The findings revealed that females and males spent 4.1 ± 3.9 and 2.9 ± 2.8 hr on SNS, respectively, with the majority of time spent lurking (i.e., looking at another users’ profile but not actually communicating with them). Furthermore, problematic SNS use was found to be related to BI, SE, and ED symptoms/concerns. Moreover, SNS activities, such as lurking and posting comments on others’ profiles, were found to be related to BI, whereas SNS total time was found to be related to ED symptoms/concerns. Overall, this study demonstrates the possible correlational influence of SNSs on BI, SE, and ED symptoms/concerns.

Background: Self-esteem is a critical factor in online impression management strategies and could play a crucial role in explaining women’s selfie-posting behaviours. Previous works examining relationships between self-esteem and self-presentation on social media have yielded controversial results. Objective: This study was performed to clarify the relationship between self-esteem and the frequency of taking and posting own, group and partner selfies on Social Networking Sites (SNS). Methods: A sample of 692 Italian young women (18-28 years old) completed questionnaires on self-esteem, satisfaction with life, body satisfaction and selfie posting bahaviours. The low self-esteem group was compared with the high self-esteem group. Results: Results showed that women with low self-esteem are more dissatisfied with their body image and life and significantly they post fewer types of selfies compared to women with high self-esteem. Conclusion: Findings from this study provide new insights into the relation between self-esteem and selfie impression management strategies.

Purpose This study aims to determine the extent of implementation of income-generating projects (IGPs) of the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP). Design/methodology/approach It uses a descriptive-correlational research design, involving 126 respondents, composed of 5 members of IGP Board of management, 11 managers and 110 clients. Frequency counts, percentages, ratios, weighted means and multiple regression analysis are used to treat and analyze the data gathered. The assessment of the extent of implementation of IGPs results in a high extent of implementation, indicating that the emergence and development of IGPs significantly improved the income-generating capacity of UEP. Findings The test of the relationship between the extent of implementation and the profile of the IGPs in terms of length of operations prove that they are not significantly related, indicating that the length of operations has no direct influence on the implementation of the IGPs, and the extent of how IGPs are implemented does not largely depend on the number of staff the IGPs have. However, the average number of clients served is significantly related to the extent of implementation of IGPs. Originality/value In determining whether a relationship existed between the extent of implementation of IGP and the profile of the staff, the results prove that except for the age of the staff, the educational attainment and the number of trainings and seminars attended are found to have a significant relationship.

The study assessed the relationship between the dimensions of Distance Learning Delivery Modality (DLDM) implementation, resilience quotient, and work performance among public secondary teachers in the 5 City Schools Divisions in Laguna for the school year 2020-2021. Eight Hundred Fourteen (814) public school secondary teachers responded to the study. The global outbreak of COVID-19, a highly contagious coronavirus type, poses unprecedented challenges, particularly in education. Like everyone else, teachers face challenges that test their resilience. The researcher employed the descriptive-correlational research design and researcher-made questionnaire for the Level of DLDM implementation and work performance while an adopted questionnaire in measuring the teachers’ resilience quotient at work. Mean, standard deviation, Pearson r and Multiple Linear Regression Analysis were the statistical tools utilized to analyze and interpret the data gathered. Findings revealed that the teachers were implementing the DLDM properly, they were very resilient at work, and their work performance was very satisfactory. The teachers' level of DLDM implementation and resilience quotient affected the teachers' work performance. Four (4) domains of the teachers' resilience quotient, namely finding your calling, staying healthy, interacting cooperatively, and living authentically, and the design construct of the DLDM Implementation significantly predict the work performance of the teachers. School officials and administrators in the teacher training institute may design and conduct different training programs for the teachers that may enhance their level of resilience quotient and work performance in the new normal. Other elements that may predict teacher performance must be investigated in the future.

Social networking sites are changing the way in which young people develop and maintain friendships and relationships. This study investigated the relationship between level of Facebook addiction, Facebook behaviors, gender, and intimacy development in emerging adults. Participants were 273 university students aged 18 to 25. They completed an online questionnaire that measured their level of Facebook addiction, what they do on Facebook, and their ability to form intimate relationships. A gender difference was found with long distance, passive, active photo, and organizing behaviors relating to high levels of Facebook addiction in females, whereas gaming was related to high levels of Facebook addiction in males. Intimacy development was related to high Facebook use and long distance, active photo, and organizing behaviors, but not to the level of Facebook addiction. Implications regarding the identification of at-risk for addiction emerging adults are discussed.

Objective: To identify the relationship between self-assessment of emotional status and school average in students of Human Communication Therapy of the UJED. Methodology: Non-exploratory, survey, cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational research, with non-probabilistic sampling, for convenience, after signature of informed consent. Contribution: The information analyzed had a Cronbach Alpha of .83. About 75% of students self-assessed with anxiety, anguish and fear; 60% said they felt low self-esteem; 50% expressed apprehension, aggression and depression and 35% have felt shy. The correlational analysis between aggressiveness and school average showed r-.206 with p.05 which makes it possible to establish that the greater the feeling of aggressiveness is lower the school average or that the lower the feeling of aggressiveness is the higher the school average. Self-assessment of anxiety, anguish, apprehension, low self-esteem, depression, anger, fear, nervousness, rebelliousness and shyness showed no correlation with the school average.

Online social networking sites have revealed an entirely new method of impression management and self-expression. These user-generated social tools present a new and evolving medium of investigation to study personality and identity. The current study examines how narcissism and self-esteem are demonstrated on the social networking application Instagram. To frame our research, we utilized the Uses and Gratifications Theory, which explains why audiences consume mediated messages and how and why authors create user-generated media (UGM). In this research our objective was to understand how and why users of Instagram in Kuwait were using the social media platform and how it related and impacted their self-esteem and how it revealed, if any, narcissistic personality traits. To do so, self-esteem and narcissistic personality self-reports were collected from 79 Instagram users in Kuwait and we also followed and analyzed their Instagram accounts. In our analysis, these participants’ profiles were coded on self-promotional content features based on their Instagram photos and captions posted on their Instagram accounts. By probing the relationship between this new medium, we can begin to understand the relationship amongst technology, culture, and the self. This article examines the relationship between trade and migration for the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand using three methods: (1) a comparison of graphic representations of trade and migration flows; (2) postulation and testing of a statistical relationship; and (3) a comparison of revealed comparative advantage for goods with that for services. In addition, trade and migration flows are presented for other Asian countries, namely Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The results reveal a correlation between turning points in trade and migration that supports the existing view that these flows are substitutes.

Social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and StudiVZ are popular means of communicating personality. Recent theoretical and empirical considerations of homepages and Web 2.0 platforms show that impression management is a major motive for actively participating in social networking sites. However, the factors that determine the specific form of self-presentation and the extent of self-disclosure on the Internet have not been analyzed. In an exploratory study, we investigated the relationship between self-reported (offline) personality traits and (online) self-presentation in social networking profiles. A survey among 58 users of the German Web 2.0 site, StudiVZ.net, and a content analysis of the respondents’ profiles showed that self-efficacy with regard to impression management is strongly related to the number of virtual friends, the level of profile detail, and the style of the personal photo. The results also indicate a slight influence of extraversion, whereas there was no significant effect for self-esteem.
