The effect of plasticizer on dielectric properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/titanium dioxide (TiO2) composites was investigated. Propylene carbonate (PC) was used as plasticizer in the samples which were prepared with the conventional solvent casting technique. Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (SEM-EDX) and Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses and LCR Meter measurements (performed between 300 K and 400 K), were conducted to examine the properties of the composites. With the addition of plasticizer, the thermal properties have changed and the dielectric constant of the composite has increased significantly. The glass transition temperature of pure PMMA measured 121.7°C and this value did not change significantly with the addition of TiO2, however, 112°C was measured in the sample with the addition 4 ml of PC. While the dielectric constant of pure PMMA was 3.64, the ε′ value increased to 5.66 with the addition of TiO2 and reached 12.6 with the addition of 4 ml PC. These changes have been attributed to increase in amorphous ratio that facilitates polymer dipolar and segmental mobility.

This study evaluates the physical properties of freeze dried tropical (guava, sapota, and papaya) fruit powders. Thermal stability and weight loss were evaluated using TGA-DSC and IR, which showed pectin as the main solid constituent. LCR meter measured electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and dielectric loss factor. Functional groups assessed by FTIR showed presence of chlorides, and O–H and N–H bonds in guava, chloride and C–H bond in papaya, and chlorides, and C=O and C–H bonds in sapota. Particle size and type of starch were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and microstructure through scanning electronic microscopy. A semicrystalline profile and average particle size of the fruit powders were evidenced by X-ray diffraction and lamellar/spherical morphologies by SEM. Presence of A-type starch was observed in all three fruits. Dependence of electric and dielectric properties on frequency and temperature was observed.

[Formula: see text](BiFe[Formula: see text]GdxO3)–y(PbZrO3) composites [Formula: see text], having four different Gd concentrations ([Formula: see text], 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2), were synthesized and their structural, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties have been studied using different characterization techniques. In addition, to investigate the effect of ion implantation on the microstructure and dielectric properties, these composites were exposed to 2[Formula: see text]MeV He[Formula: see text]-ions. Modifications of the structure, surface morphology and electrical properties of the samples before and after ion exposure were demonstrated using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique, and LCR meter. The compositional analysis was carried out using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). XRD results demonstrated a decrease in the intensity profile of the dominant peak by a factor of 6 showing a degradation of the crystallinity. Willliamson–Hall (WH) plots reveal reduction in the grain size after irradiation along with an increase in strain and dislocation density. A decrease in the dielectric constant and loss has been recorded after ion beam exposure with reduction in ac conductivity value. The contribution of grain and grain boundary effect in conduction mechanism has been addressed using Nyquist plots. All the samples demonstrate a lossy ferroelectric loop which shows a clear modification upon irradiation. The role of structural defects modifying the physical properties of the composite materials is discussed in this work.

Abstract Herein, we describe the growth and characterization of new crystal lead doped L-Threonine cadmium acetate (LTCA). The supramolecular coordination compounds are crystallized by slow evaporation technique at ambient temperature. The X-ray diffraction techniques confirm monoclinic crystal system and the presence of lead onto the LTCA lattice. L-Threonine amino acids have the unique properties like zwitter ionic nature and molecular chirality, which improves the optical properties of the crystal. The linear optical parameters such as optical band gap and refractive indexes are estimated from Uv-Vis analysis. The variation of dielectric constant, dielectric loss with frequency is studied using LCR meter. Due to the electropositive character of lead the static permittivity increases. Magnetic behavior changes to paramagnetic nature due to the inclusion of lead. TG/DTA analysis suggests, the crystal is thermally stable up to 135.32°C. Using Nd-YAG laser the NLO property was studied and the crystal shows higher SHG efficiency than the LTCA crystal.

SrBi1.8Ce0.2Nb2O9 (SBCN) and SrBi1.8Ce0.2Ta2O9 (SBCT) powders were prepared via solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the SBCN and SBCT powders have the single phase orthorhom-bic Aurivillius structure at room temperature. The contribution of Raman scattering and FTIR spectroscopy of these samples were relatively smooth and resemble each other. The calcined powders were uniaxially pressed and sintered at 1250?C for 8 h to obtaine dense ceramics. Dielectric constant, loss tangent and AC conductivity of the sintered Ce-doped SrBi2Nb2O9 and SrBi2Ta2O9 ceramics were measured by LCR meter. The Ce-doped SBN (SBCN) ceramics have a higher Curie temperature (TC) and dielectric constant at TC (380?C and ?? ~3510) compared to the Ce-doped SBT (SBCT) ceramics (330?C and ?? ~115) when measured at 100Hz. However, the Ce-doped SBT (SBCT) ceramics have lower conductivity and dielectric loss.

Capacitive proximity sensors are well-suited for educational projects due to their low cost and simple design. Traditional undergraduate textbooks and lab exercises rarely highlight the fact that the performance of capacitive proximity sensors can be quite sensitive to ground loading. This paper presents a simple classroom demonstration for exploring this topic in detail. The capacitive proximity sensor for this demonstration is a hand-held LCR meter connected to a homemade capacitor composed of two strips of aluminum foil. Students explore the operation of this sensor for two different system ground configurations. In the first case the LCR meter is battery powered (floating ground referenced) and in the second case the LCR meter is powered by AC mains supply (earth ground referenced). When a student positions their hand near the foil strips, the battery-powered sensor measures an increase in capacitance. Conversely, the AC-mains-powered sensor measures a decrease in capacitance. The instructor guides students to discover for themselves the reason for this seemingly puzzling difference by modeling parasitic capacitance and ground loading using simple circuit models.

Effect of difference silica source, namely commersial silica and silica from rice husk, as Si precursor on the synthesis of lanthanum silicate apatite (LSO) have been investigated. The conductivity of LSO was determined by impedance spectroscopy using LCR meter. The conductivity of LSO based on rice husk extraction (s700°C = 2.13 ´ 10-4 S.cm-1) was ten times lower than that of LSO with commercial silica (s700°C = 3.11´ 10-5 S.cm-1). Carbon content as an impurity on silica from rice husk extraction is suspected to decrease the homogeneity of its morphology so that it has an impact on its conductivity.

Ceramics of (1-x)CaCu3Ti4O12-xBi2/3Cu3Ti4O12, i.e., CCTO-BCTO, with x=0, 0.01, 0.1 and 0.25, respectively, were prepared via the conventional solid-state reaction. The phase structure of the ceramics was identified by X-ray diffraction. The microstructure of the sample was observed with scanning electron microscopy. Dielectric properties and impedance spectroscopy were measured using a LCR Meter, in which 0.9CCTO-0.1BCTO displayed highest dielectric constant (584108) and lowest dielectric loss (0.42) at 1kHz among the four kinds of specimens. Based on series of experimental results, an optimum amount of x was able to improve the dielectric properties of CCTO-BCTO, through adjusting the impedance characteristics of the grain and grain boundary.
