The improvement and enhancement of scientific journals in Vietnam to meet international standards is in line with the directions and policies of the Vietnamese government. These policies aim to enhance the scientific and technological capacity of the contingent of researchers and research agencies in Vietnam. According to previous studies conducted in the period between1996-2013 in Vietnam, the total scientific output of the whole country increased by only 16 publications per year between 1996-2001. It was also found that there was an increase of 20% per year in 2002-2013 (Manh, 2015). Therefore, it is extremely necessary to propose a criteria and measures for domestic scientific journals to access international publishing standards as well as improve the capacity of Vietnamese researchers. In a number of studies related to improving the quality of international publications of scientists in Vietnam, the issue of improving the capacity of ranking research journals appeared in the works of Chung et al.(2019), Cuong, Loc, Trung, & Trung (2020), Ho et al. (2019) Hoang et al. (2020), Hung (2016), Nguyen et al. (2020), Trang et al. (2020), Trung, Linh, Phuong, Toan, & Hoang (2020). Most authors have confirmed the trend of increasing the quantity and quality of research in general and research in the field of educational science in Vietnam. However, the authors also pointed out a number of reasons why scientific research in Vietnam has not yet met the standards of international scientific research, including the issue of citing references.

In 2014, the UK-based Nuffield Council on Bioethics carried out a series of engagement activities, including an online survey to which 970 people responded, and 15 discussion events at universities around the UK to explore the culture of research in the UK and its effect on ethical conduct in science and the quality of research. The findings of the project were published in December 2014 and the main points are summarised here. We found that scientists are motivated in their work to find out more about the world and to benefit society, and that they believe collaboration, multidisciplinarity, openness and creativity are important for the production of high quality science. However, in some cases, our findings suggest, the culture of research in higher education institutions does not support or encourage these goals or activities. For example, high levels of competition and perceptions about how scientists are assessed for jobs and funding are reportedly contributing to a loss of creativity in science, less collaboration and poor research practices. The project led to suggestions for action for funding bodies, research institutions, publishers and editors, professional bodies and individual researchers.

AbstractJournals fill several important roles within academic medicine, including building knowledge, validating quality of methods, and communicating research. This section provides an overview of these roles and highlights innovative approaches journals have taken to enhance dissemination of research. As journals move away from print formats and embrace web-based content, design-centered thinking will allow for engagement of a larger audience. Examples of recent efforts in this realm are provided, as well as simplified strategies for developing visual abstracts to improve dissemination via social media. Finally, we hone in on principles of learning and education which have driven these advances in multimedia-based communication in scientific research.

ABSTRACT The American Academy of Microbiology convened a colloquium to discuss problems in the biological sciences, with emphasis on identifying mechanisms to improve the quality of research. Participants from various disciplines made six recommendations: (i) design rigorous and comprehensive evaluation criteria to recognize and reward high-quality scientific research; (ii) require universal training in good scientific practices, appropriate statistical usage, and responsible research practices for scientists at all levels, with training content regularly updated and presented by qualified scientists; (iii) establish open data at the timing of publication as the standard operating procedure throughout the scientific enterprise; (iv) encourage scientific journals to publish negative data that meet methodologic standards of quality; (v) agree upon common criteria among scientific journals for retraction of published papers, to provide consistency and transparency; and (vi) strengthen research integrity oversight and training. These recommendations constitute an actionable framework that, in combination, could improve the quality of biological research.
