The article deals with the problems of the influence of the livestock sector on the formation of sustainable development of rural areas. It is emphasized that currently global problems have formed in the world, namely: differentiation in living standards between developed countries and ‘third world’ countries, significant differentiation of income levels among most countries, environmental pollution, limited and reduced easily accessible natural resources, degradation of agricultural lands. Today, the principles of sustainable development are recognized as strategic directions for the development of the sector by the world’s leading countries. In the process of research, dialectical methods of cognition of processes and phenomena, monographic method (analysis of views on the concept of sustainable development), abstract-logical (theoretical generalizations and formulation of conclusions) were used. The article addresses the problems of the influence of the livestock sector on the formation of sustainable development of rural areas. A brief overview of approaches and principles for the interpretation of the concept of ‘sustainable development’ was conducted. It is noted that the current situation in rural areas is critical in terms of, first of all, social and environmental problems. The livestock sector should become one of the elements of their solution. It is noted that its development allows not only to diversify production, but also to improve the social situation and solve certain environmental problems. The authors give their own definition of rural development as a development that provides an increase in the level and quality of life of rural residents with the provision of their social needs and the ability to pass on the natural biodiversity of the respective areas to future generations. It is emphasized that this definition combines economic, social and environmental development. The key principles of the state policy in development of rural territories on the principles of sustainable development with allocation of its constituent elements are formulated. Measures for sustainable development of rural areas through the support of the livestock sector as one of the components of agricultural production are proposed. It is noted that intensive production is possible today, provided that the optimal ratio of the structure of land use and the presence of the livestock sector in the structure of production is maintained.

Environmental education (EE) for sustainable development remains a valuable subject of contemporary society, which is characterized with environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, loss of biodiversity, and resource degradation. The delivery of EE is based on the North American Association for environmental education values of knowledge, dispositions, competencies, and responsible behavior towards the environment. EE is a transformative tool to learners since it prepares learners with skills, attitudes, knowledge, and values to resolve environmental problems. It promotes environmental activism and action-oriented resolution of environmental issues. The full benefits of EE are challenged by limited human capacity, questionable professionalism, limited resources, and poor transformation of knowledge to practice. These challenges however can be alleviated through community engagement in formulating EE programs, multidisciplinary engagements, and research on EE delivery and quality.

In the article the author scientifically justified the choice of strategic directions of environmental activities in the region, which provide the formation of a real trend of gradual improvement of the environmental situation. The author uses a variety of methodological tools. The tools include methods of analysis, generalization, design, statistical methods. Aggravation of environmental problems requires regionalization of environmental policy, regulation and management of natural resources in the long term. Currently, the need to develop an effective strategy for environmental protection in the region is being actualized. Environmental consequences of economic activity arise and manifest themselves in a particular area. The local nature of anthropogenic impact on the processes of reproduction of natural resources and the state of the environment require the search for ways to effectively solve environmental problems, taking into account the characteristics of natural factors and conditions of the territory. It is necessary to analyze the specifics of the production and spatial structure of the regional production complex. The development of the environmental strategy provides for the definition of the environmental mission of the region and its ecological image of the future. When developing the strategy, priority environmental goals and objectives are selected. These tasks are then detailed in specific environmental programs. Further, the mechanism of their implementation is developed, the analysis and evaluation of the results and consequences of the implementation of programs are carried out. At the same time, the ecological mission of the region and its ecological image of the future are based on the analysis of internal and external factors that affect the formation of the ecological situation in the region. Further opportunities and threats for ensuring ecological safety of development of regional economy and habitat of people are revealed. The authors consider the regional environmental program as the main tool for planning, forecasting and practical implementation of regional environmental policy. The regional environmental programme facilitates the coordination of environmental activities in the region. Regional programs are developed within the framework of long-term forecasting and include strategic interests of Ukraine. The conditions of implementation of the environmental strategy in the region and the problems of creating economic tools to stimulate environmental protection measures, modern legal support of environmental policy are analyzed. The authors identify the features of financing environmental activities in Ukraine and explore innovative aspects of environmental safety of the national economy. The researchers revealed the place of the ecological subsystem in the structure of programs of socio-economic development of the region, analyzed the basic methodological and methodical bases of formation of the strategy of environmental protection in the region. The authors scientifically justified the choice of strategic directions of environmental activities in the region, which provide the formation of a real trend of gradual improvement of the environmental situation. The research studies the issue of ecological stability of rural territories that is the most important component of the national environmental policy of Ukraine. A special attention is paid to degradation of arable lands as the main ecological problem of land management. On the example of Lviv region, the authors calculated the index of ecological nonconformity of current use of arable lands, proving a considerable excess of permissible ploughing of lands in the region. The carried analysis confirms that no measures were performed concerning land protection, including conservation that in the recent years. In this context it is necessary to improve land resources management on the basis of sustainable development. Integration is considered to be the main principle of land resources management. The research proves that solution of ecological problems of land management requires achievement of a set of coordinated targets concerning development of rural territories, land resources management and national environmental policy based on the principles of suitable development. The targets include: planning of land use outside settled areas on the landscape and ecological basis; land inventory; formation of the land bank of agricultural lands; development and support of alternative kinds of activity on rural area; development of an efficient mechanism to encourage performance of land protection measures; improvement of environmental responsibility of population and development of ecological education. The methodological basis of the research is the concept of sustainable development, which expects support for a continuous character of development in order to meet the current needs along with ensuring the needs of future generations. The fulfilment of the task requires examination of scientific works on the issue of sustainable management of land resources and an ecological component of rural territory development.
