In this essay I intend to show how Maupassant turned his short stories into a denouncement area of the ‘inherited ideas’, which mean commonly accepted ideas, such as those included by Flaubert in his Dictionary of inherited ideas. In this part of Maupassant’s literary work, the syntagm ‘inherited ideas’ acquires several different meanings, such as: some commonplace topics of the French bourgeoisie, the hasty taking up of fashionable words, attitudes, or cultural clichés, which one may come across in everyday life, the tendency of accepting as unchallenged some social, moral or religious prejudices, or foolish beliefs and unjust statements, authoritatively uttered by ordinary people. I’ll also emphasize the manner Maupassant treated the ‘inherited ideas’ by his ironical hints and the narrator’s affective implication, in spite of his seeming impassibility.

Guy de Maupassant is a French author whose works have been translated into English. Some of his shorts stories focused on women as the center of the story in which women become the source of misfortune as presented in five chosen short stories for this research. This research is part of objective approach research that focuses on analyzing literary works as it is, without considering the relationship of the intrinsic aspects to the reality of the world. Although the possible intention of the author to use literary work as a tool to educate readers is also explained. In delivering his ideas, Guy de Maupassant often describes women in stereotypes that include formlessness, instability, irrationality, piety, spirituality, materialism. Guy de Maupassant also used his literary work as an instrument to teach the readers about the concept of ideal women by providing advice if not criticism and humiliation; because trough reading literature, the knowledge transfer activities become possible. Keyword: Guy De Maupassant, Short Stories, Stereotypes

The theme of illegitimacy Guy de Maupassant evolved in his works this article perceives as one of the factors of the author’s concept of a person and the plane of intersection of the most typical motifs of his short stories. The study of the author’s concept of a person through the prism of polivariability of the motif of a bastard is relevant in today’s revision of traditional values, transformation of the usual social institutions and search for identities, etc. The purpose of the study is to give a definition to the existence specifics of the bastard motif in the Maupassant’s short stories by using historical and literary, comparative, structural methods of analysis as dominant. To do this, I analyze the content, variability and the role of this motive in the formation of the Maupassant’s concept of a person, the author’s innovations in its interpretation from the point of view of literary diachrony. Maupassant interprets the bastard motif in the social, psychological and metaphorical-symbolic sense. For the short stories with the presentation of this motif, I suggest the typology based on the role of it in the structure of the work and the ideological and thematic content: the short stories with a motif-fragment, the ones with the bastard’s leitmotif and the group where the bastard motif becomes a central theme. The Maupassant’s interpretation of the bastard motif combines the general tendencies of its existence in the world’s literary tradition and individual reading. The latter is the result of the author’s understanding of the relevant for the era issues: the transformation of the family model, the interest in the theory of heredity, the strengthening of atheistic sentiments, the growth of frustration in the system of traditional social and moral values etc. This study sets the ground for a prospective analysis of the evolution the bastard motif in the short-story collections of different years or a comparative study of the motif in short stories and novels by Maupassant.

A good literary work can provide information about various kinds of community life,including life related to religiosity. Literary works are closely related to religisiutas,because of that, various works appearing showing the religiosity of society, one ofwhich is the Javanese. Modern Indonesian literary works that illustrate this are thecollection of short stories from Umi Kalsum by Djamil Suherman, the lyrical prosePengakuan Pariyem by Linus Suryadi AG, and the novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk byAhmad Tohari. Each of these works represents the diversity of Javanese society. Thecollection of short stories from Umi Kalsum shows the religious side of the communitycalled the santri who are so obedient in carrying out their worship. The lyrical proseof Pariyem's confession provides information on how a babu is so resigned to seeinglife, but in her soul holds the wisdom of Kejawen. Meanwhile, Ronggeng Dukuh Parukdescribes the Javanese people who worship the spirits of their ancestors. Even thoughthey have different religions, they basically want harmony. Javanese people who livein santri enjoy harmony when they live with strong Islamic values. The Javanesepeople of the Gunung Kidul area live in harmony if they are always nrimo and see lifeas it is according to its Javanese nature. The Dukuh Paruk community attainsharmony that originates from the worship of the spirit of Ki Secamenggala.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap suara-suara masyarakat yang dimarginalkan dalam kumpulan cerpen Orang-Orang Pinggiran karya Lea Pamungkas. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori sosiologi sastra dengan metode penelitian deskripsi kualitatif hermeneutik. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah karya sastra berupa kumpulan cerpen Orang-Orang Pinggiran karya Lea Pamungkas. Data pada penelitian ini berupa teks yang memperlihatkan suara-suara masyarakat pinggiran. Hasil penelitian ini berupa marginalisasi terhadap perempuan dan kelompok masyarakat. Marginalisasi pada perempuan, yaitu perempuan dianggap hanya sebagai subjek pemuas nafsu kaum laki-laki. Marginalisasi terhadap kelompok masyarakat ini berupa suara yang diabaikan dalam memenuhi kebutuhan sehingga menyebabkan kemiskinan Indonesia.Kata kunci: kumpulan cerpen, marginal, masyarakat pinggiran, sosiologi sastra ABSTRACT This study aims to reveal the voices of the marginalized in a collection of short stories Orang-Orang Pinggiran by Lea Pamungkas. This research uses sociology of literature theory with hermeneutic qualitative description research method. The Source of this research is a literary work in the form of a collection of short stories from Orang-Orang Pinggiran by Lea Pamungkas. The data in this study are in the form of texts that show the voices of marginalized communities. The result of this research is the marginalization of women and community groups. Marginalization of women, women are considered only as a subject to satisfy the lust of men. The marginalization of this community groups is in the form of their a voice that is ignored in meeting their needs, causing poverty in Indonesia.Keywords: a collection of short stories, marginal, marginal societ, literary sociology

This essay discusses Grigorije Bozovic's literary and publicistic work and the degree to which it offers factography for anthropogeographical anthropological (that is, related to racial features), ethnographic ethnopsychological, sociological and characterological studies of our nation living in the regions discussed in his literary and publicistic works. The author particularly analyses his traveller's reports Sa sedla i samara (From the Saddle and Pack-Saddle), Crte i reze (Lines and Bars), Po Drenici (In Drenica) and others; it also analyses the short stories published in Srpska Knjizevna Zadruga (Serbian Literary Cooperative) (Rodjak / A Relative) and in the collections with the titles Roblje Zarobljeno (Captured Slaves) and Neizmisljeni Likovi (Nonfictional Characters). On the basis of the reviews and analyses of Grigorije Bozovic's publicistic and literary works in this essay, one could make a conclusion that they represent a significant scientific material and more than just that, the material relevant for the study of our and other nations in these Balkan regions.

For Bryan Stanley Johnson, a British post-war avant-garde author, space was a crucial aspect of a literary work. Inspired by architects and film makers, he was convinced that “form follows function” (“Introduction” to Aren’t You Rather Young to Be Writing Your Memoirs) and exercised the book as a material object, thus anticipating liberature – a literary genre defined in 1999 by Zenon Fajfer and Katarzyna Bazarnik, which encompasses works whose authors purposefully fuse the content with the form. The goal of this paper is to analyse the cityscape theme in Johnson’s second novel, Albert Angelo (1964), in which London is presented as space that accompanies the character in his everyday life and becomes a witness of the formation of his identity. The protagonist is an architect by profession, so special attention is paid to his visual sensitivity and the way the cityscape is reflected in his memories. Furthermore, Johnson’s formal exploitation of the book as an object and its correspondence to the content is analysed with reference to the metaphor of “[t]he book as an architectural structure” discussed by Bazarnik in Liberature. Abstract— Literary work, directly or indirectly, is the realization and imagination of the author as a reflection and the reality that the author gets from society. Literary works can be found through the life forms of society. Thus, literary works cannot be separated from the elements around them. Literary work along its journey always implicate man, humanity, life, and life. In essence, literary works are born for the surrounding community. Literary works are the products of authors who live in the social world. That way, short story literary works in the form of fairy tales are the author's imaginative world that is always related to social life. This paper was written based on the practice of translating four O. Henry stories  into Bahasa Indonesia. The translated stories are “A Harlem Tragedy”, “A Lickpenny Lover”, “The Last Leaf”, and “The Pendulum”. The strategy of translation and the techniques proposed by Molina and Albir were applied, combined with the the application of theories of meaning, grammatical equivalence, and stylistic devices. In this study these aspects are termed as ‘soft tools of translation’. By applying the soft tools,  the witticism, clever wordplay, unexpected ‘twist’ ending and epic life moment  of ordinary people, as the characteristics of O Henry’s short stories, and foreign culture elements were pursued to preserve in the translation.Key terms: translation, soft tools, short stories, charateristics, culture elements, preserve
