Abstract:Many of theoretical and critical discourses in the Arab world that focus on Arabic literary criticism be it traditional or modern, do not necessarily indicate an awareness and correctness in approaching critical text that come in different shades.

This article surveys the history of English studies and education in Japan, paying special attention to the role of literary texts and stylistics. Firstly, the role of literature and stylistics in Japan is discussed from a pedagogical point of view, including both English as a foreign language and Japanese as a native language. Secondly, the way in which stylistics has contributed to literary criticism in the country is examined, with reference to the history of literary stylistics since 1980. Finally, this article considers further applications of stylistics to language study in Japan, offering two examples: analysis of thought presentation in Yukio Mishima’s Megami (2006[1955]), and the teaching of an English poem and a Japanese haiku to Japanese EFL students. The overall aim of this article is to demonstrate that literature as language teaching material and stylistics as a critical and teaching method are significant not only in understanding English, but also in appreciating our own native language if it is not English.

The article deals with the analysis of the short stories by O. Konyskyi from the point of view of irony functioning in them. S. Kierkegaard compared irony to divine madness, which, like Tamerlane, did not leave a stone unturned, because “in the irony, negativity takes precedence over positivity, freedom over necessity”. In the modern literary criticism, irony is seen, on the one hand, as an aesthetic category, the characteristic feature of which is the lack of care to make the reader laugh; it is primarily a matter of marking of the author’s perception of reality (“Ironic meaning” by S. Pokhodnia). On the other hand — irony is viewed as a stylistic figure, which is based on allegory and which testifies to the potential of the individual authorial style. However, in both cases, to understand the true meaning of an ironic statement, it is necessary to have a context, which is its main semantic background. In a number of works by O. Konyskyi, irony serves as a means to express certain traits of character and behaviour of the character and is exemplified through epithets and comparisons. Less often, it becomes a means to construct the text and a plot-forming factor, as is in the story “And we are people!” The subject of the study is irony as a complex (two-tier) message, the purpose to understand the hidden content of which requires context. The object of the literary analysis is comprised of the short stories by O. Konyskyi, that have not yet been considered from this point of view. The latter fact informs the novelty of the study. The purpose of the article is to clarify the place and the role of irony in the bulk of short stories by this writer. The outlined goal determines reaching the following objectives: to trace the dynamics of the apperiance of different types of irony in the short stories by O. Konyskyi; to identity the dependence of the frequency and the form the ironic expression; to find out the influence of the author’s ironic approach on the form the work. As a result of the analysis by means of the approaches of biographical, historical-literary and empirical research methods, it was possible to find out: despite the fact that irony is not a dominant feature of O. Konyskyi’s worldview, in his short stories works with textual irony stand out.

Annotation: The relevance of this study is due to its connection with the modern direction of language learning - cognitive linguistics, which makes it possible to identify the specifics of the representation of human knowledge, including evaluative ones, in the semantics of linguistic units. The prospect of the cognitive approach in studying the processes of evaluative conceptualization and evaluative categorization is explained by the fact that it makes it possible to assess the role of a person in the perception and evaluation of the surrounding reality and the formation of evaluative values, taking into account the interaction of cognitive and linguistic factors. Accordingly, the evaluative categories "good" and "bad" in this study are considered from the point of view of the mental processes of evaluative conceptualization and evaluative categorization and their refraction in linguistic meanings. Keywords: concept, language, linguacultural study, linguacultural concept "bad", linguacultural concept "good", linguistic materialization of a concept, linguacultural research.

The article is devoted to the extremely fruitful “meeting&8j1; of modern literary theory with traditional Jewish hermeneutics that took place in American literary criticism in the 1980s and 1990s. American poststructuralists sought not only to read Jewish sources using the optics of a new theory of reading based on the ideas of J. Derrida and R. Barthes, but also to see in rabbinic hermeneutics an actual source of models, images and terms for modern text theory. An analysis of the approaches of S. Handelman, H. Bloom, D. Boyarin shows that for them the terms of Kabbalah, the Midrash technique, and the rabbinic notion of the role of the interpreter, of tradition and innovation, stabilization and deformation of the canon have become tools for solving problems of modern literary theory. For these authors, the problem of continuing tradition in a situation of breaking with tradition and the problem of the theoretician's situation on the border of two worlds came to the fore. We can talk about the aspiration in poststructuralism to a triple reading of traditional Jewish texts: both as sacred texts, as objects of scientific study and as “modern” theoretical texts. In turn, the texts of modern theory are read by American poststructuralists as a continuation of an ancient tradition.

The article analyzes theoretical definitions of the concept “poetology” and examines problems covering this issue. Based on the opinions of literary scholars, the relation of the term “poetology” to the entire literary-figurative system in the structure of the work is revealed in the paper. The analysis of various concepts allowed concluding that poetology is a teaching based on knowledge of the nature of literary consciousness and literary creativity. Based on this opinion, studies the poetical space of Abai’s works from the point of view of the figurative functions of his literary details. While analyzing the text of his poems, the role of the man of letter’s consciousness as a source of creativity, the functions of the subconsciousness and intention in the creative process as well as issues of aesthetic perception and associative thinking are explained here. On the material of poems based on the outstanding poet’s philosophical reflections about life, the author demonstrates the specific, psychological and symbolic types of literary details and studies their meaning. In order to study Abay’s poetic space, the subject of the analysis is represented by several poems, the role of literary details in the structure of the text in reflecting thoughts and feelings, the poet’s new images, the meaning of concepts in the content of the poem, the literary skill, poetic knowledge in accordance with the requirements of modern literary studies are discussed in the paper. In these verses, Abay artfully combines the criteria of the transience of life and eternity. The author analyzes and formulates the correction of his own, individual poetic space through the images of “time of troubles”, “blue fog”, the forthcoming time, “colorful butterfly”, dying in the summer, autumn, “arising butterfly”, “arising sun”, sneaking every day, “unchanging common Tengri”, “I”, glorifying the mind and spirit, “mine” embodying the way of life and character. It is proven that the characteristic images in the poet’s poems are created through various characteristic visual details.

MOST RECENT critical studies indicate that as the poetry and criticism of T. S. Eliot move toward their inevitable period of eclipse all of the old critical attitudes are still intact. Since the late twenties there have been numerous charges of inconsistency between Eliot's early and later criticism, and between his criticism and his poetry, and though a few critics have been piecing together the unfinished case for continuity, the cumulative criticism of Eliot's development as a poet-critic-Catholic has led most of us discussing Eliot's work in the classroom to accept the following prevalent assumptions and chronology: that the poems written from “Prufrock” to “The Hollow Men” are those of a despairing, skeptical poet probing spiritual bankruptcy in the modern world ; that from “Tradition and the Individual Talent” (1919) to his conversion in 1927 Eliot's theory of tradition and criticism spring from literary rather than moral concerns; that in 1928, when in the Preface to For Lancelot Andrewes Eliot announces that his attitude is “classicist in literature, royalist in politics, and anglocatholic in religion,” there is a rather sudden turn from an esthetic and literary theory of tradition to a moral and religious doctrine of orthodoxy; that in After Strange Gods (1934) and later Eliot not only sins against literature by employing his dogmatic religious beliefs as the narrow touchstone of his criticism, but yearns nostalgically for the unified sensibility and moral security of a lost medieval world. But these widespread opinions are misleading, for by 1916 Eliot's classical, royalist, and religious point of view was already formulated. A first step toward establishing this assertion, which calls for a full-scale revaluation of Eliot's development and of the primary concerns of his poetry and criticism before 1928, is to examine evidence of Eliot's critical and religious position in 1915–16, and especially the role of T. E. Hulme in defining that position.

Purpose – This paper aims to explore the role of line-item budgeting in film production in an effort to illustrate the positive effects that budgetary constraints can have on creativity. Design/methodology/approach – Using Elster’s (2000) constraint theory as a basis for the research, this paper conducted a case study on the making of a Danish adventure film and analysed the role budgeting plays from the film director’s point of view. Findings – This paper suggests that the constraints of the line-item budget imposed on the director had positive effects in terms of the pre-commitments entailed, which aided in protecting the director against the negative aspects of passion (e.g. distorted thought processes, myopia and weakness of will) in the creative process and in terms of the ability of the constraints to channel creativity in certain directions, thus preventing the availability of too many options from hampering the creative process. Originality/value – The paper contributes to management control research in two ways. By addressing calls to provide more insight into the positive effects management control constraints might have on creativity, this study explores somewhat ignored aspects of line-item budgeting, adding greater insight into the interrelations between creativity and control. By exploring the ways in which line-item budgeting might take on the role of pre-commitment advice and devices in the creative process, this paper further exposes the links between accounting constraints and self-control.
