In recent years India has been witnessing an upsurge of conflicts over myriad issues such as displacement related to development projects, legislative changes, claim over natural resources, environmental issues and the like. Though each conflict situation is unique and demands a detailed research exploration in its own right, the need for evolving a paradigm based on underlying commonalities and basic principles cannot be denied. Such a framework would facilitate not only the researchers, but also the policymakers, and has the potential to create pathways for conflict containment and resolution. Even a cursory perusal of the underlying dynamics of most conflicts at local, national or international levels indicates a contestation over limited resources that eventually transforms into contestations for power and identity. Many such conflicts often appear to undermine national security and are often construed as ‘anti-development’, ‘anti-establishment’ or even ‘anti-state’. The present paper posits that it is important to reveal the subtler processes of negotiation in a conflict situation, to understand conflict as a co-constructed social reality and to highlight the reciprocal impact made by the dynamics of such constructions on identities of the parties involved. Along with examining the role of identity dynamics in perpetuating conflicts, the paper argues for incorporating both identity and instrumental pathways in theorizing conflicts. Emphasising upon the role played by politicisation of identities in conflict situations, the paper proposes a theoretical model for deconstructing conflicts and working towards conflict resolution.

Essentialism, a fundamental belief of the fixedness of social group essences, is often associated with negative intergroup outcomes. However, research is yet to explore the role of essentialism in intergroup conflicts, despite their prevalence. To address this gap, we conducted the first direct examination on how essentialism influences conflict management toward out-group members. Moreover, we examined perspective-taking as a positive factor in improving conflict management among essentialist individuals relative to their non-essentialist counterparts in intergroup contexts. Results across three experiments provided little support to the negative effect of essentialism on intergroup (vs. intragroup) conflict management. Yet, we found that perspective-taking promoted the use of problem solving and improved one’s own gain and the dyad’s joint gain among essentialist individuals, but not non-essentialist individuals, in intergroup (vs. intragroup) conflict situations. This research suggests that when coupled with perspective-taking, essentialism can promote constructive conflict resolution in intergroup contexts.

The article considers components of the conflictological culture, the contexts of conflicts and the optimal styles of behavior of the individual. Due to the fact that the behavior of the opponent is a marker for the adoption of an effective strategy of actions, the author examines effective conflict management based on the study of the types of behavior of the opponent in a conflict situation. The paper notes that the conflictological culture of the individual in the context of problematic interpersonal interaction acts as an integrative quality based on the existential-humanistic apparatus of values, communicative, behavioral and psychological culture, and manifests itself in the optimal tactics of behavior aimed at constructive conflict resolution. The study concludes that conflict, as a phenomenon, contains the potential for the development and improvement of employees’ experience and skills in resolving difficult situations.

The article is concerned with one of the urgent problems of conflict management, which often arises during the interrogation of a witness, victim, accused and suspect. To resolve such a conflict situation, it is necessary to use modern technologies based on the experience of social sciences, including medicine, psychology, etc.The problem of overcoming a conflict situation requires using technologies aimed to eliminate factors hindering investigative activities. Legal technologies of interrogation are as follows: 1) the preliminary form of conversation; 2) narrative method; 3) question-answer form; 4) the procedural processing of the evidence received. Legal and social technologies of investigative activities during interrogation aim to obtain new information relevant to the case. The specificity of legal investigative technologies is the use of traditional methods during interrogation. In modern conditions, much attention is paid to new social methods of searching for evidence and information. Modern social technologies include biorhythmology as a method of interrogation from the standpoint of physiology, the relationship of the person being interrogated with macro- and micro-changes of the surrounding world and the influence on internal mental processes. The role of interrogation technology based on hypnoreproduction also increases.
