This article focuses on the relationship between Yanka Bryl and Poland, showing the influence of Polish classics on his literary legacy. Stories such as Orphan’s Bread by Yanka Bryl, Orphan’s Plight by Bolesław Prus and the novel Sisyphean Labours by Stefan Żeromski were subjected to comparative analysis. Prus concentrated on the fate of the orphan and his unequal struggle for a better tomorrow. Żeromski showed the image of the school in the Russian Congress Kingdom of Poland and the struggle of young people against Russification. J. Bryl, in his story, raised the topics of the orphanage and the struggle for linguistic, cultural and national identity.

In the context of the new bi- and polylingual picture of the world, the novel continues to hold leading positions as the leading genre of prose. The Kazakh novel generalizes the aesthetically immanent factors of identity and is created in the Kazakh and Russian languages. Ethno-national identity is important for both the author and the characters. The modern phenomenology of perception actualizes not only the role of the anthropological turn, but also the role of the subjective factor - the reader. Comparative analysis allows you to look at the novel from different conceptual points of view. Transnational tendencies are intensely manifested in the work of prose writers. The search for answers to the most important questions of our time, the challenges of globalization contributes to the disclosure of the ethnocultural world. Opposition one's own/other, one's/another's allows to convey the national attitude and reveal the national image.

Now I will tell you more – The story of Uglenspeil from the Volksbuch to the Novel.“Nu vil jeg fortælle Jer mere – Fortællingen om Uglenspeil fra folkebog til roman” [Now I will tell you more – The story of Uglenspeil from the Volksbuch to the Novel] addresses one of the most frequently debated matters in the historiography of the novel, namely the question of continuity and rupture: did the novel grow out of earlier forms, or rise as a profoundly new genre? Whereas the question of legacy informs the historiography on the English novel, there are surprisingly few investigations of the 18th century Danish novel and its relation to previous literary forms. This article investigates the relationship between the novel and the most widely read literary genre before the novel in Denmark, namely the volksbuch. It does so through a comparative analysis of Carl August Thielo's novel Den Unge Uglenspeil, eller det slet opdragne Menneske [The Young Uglenspeil, or the Person who was brought up badly] (1759) and the Volksbuch Tiile Ugelspegel (1669) (in Jacobsen, Olrik and Paulli 1930). These works are particularly informative for understanding the relationship between the two genres as Thielo’s novel is built on – and at the same time comments on – the earlier genre. The article argues that the differences between the texts concerning fictionality, narrative techniques, structure, and their levels of reflections are so fundamental that the novel cannot be regarded a genre that simply grew out of the former. Especially with regard to fictionality, it becomes clear that the volksbuch and the novel are two very different genres. Whereas the novel comes to admit its own fictional status, the volksbücher were perceived of and intended to be taken as true stories. For those reasons, the article concludes that compared to previously most popular prose genre in Denmark, the Danish novel is to be considered a profoundly new genre.

Often called the pope of Brazilian Modernism, Mário de Andrade spearheaded several different phases of the movement, and is credited with introducing the term modernismo in Brazil. From pioneering the experimental first wave of Brazilian Modernism of 1922–26 to sombre reflections on national identity in the mid-1930s–1940s and moving among poetry, short fiction, essays, musicology, travel writing, and the novel Macunaíma (1928), his output is extraordinary in both its volume and its influence. Despite his shifting registers and genres, the major preoccupations of his works remain constant throughout his lengthy career: Brazilian national identity and fraught encounters between different cultures, ethnicities, and worldviews; linguistic experimentation, especially the relationship between writing and orality; and music.

The motive of revenge is analyzed on the basis of the French topos, considered as a space of crime and punishment. It is noted that the novel by E. T. A. Hoffmann and the novel by J. Janin are united by attention to fate as a catastrophic concept inscribed in the picture of life in France. The relevance of the study is associated with the problems of the formation of national identity, national image by romantics of Germany and France. It is shown that the German romantic, who relied on fantasy as a means of understanding and cognizing life, became a model for J. Janin in the perception of “observed material”. Special attention is paid to the artistic embodiment of life as an “ugly abyss” in which the heroines of E. T. A. Hoffmann and J. Janin find themselves. The results of a comparative analysis of the novel, the action of which belongs to the second half of the 17th century are presented in the article. But the writer discusses the morals of the heroes from the point of view of the romantic canon, and the novel, the action of which is attributed to the end of the 20s of the 19th century. The novelty of the research is connected with the fact that the drama of human existence (female) is viewed as a result of the fragility of earthly existence, the loss of faith in the rationality of the universe. This approach made it possible to analyze the national forms of romanticism, the individual approach of Hoffmann and Janin to understanding the moral and the sinful.

AbstractThis study aims to describe the problem of young people’s failure in politics found in Hapsari Hanggarini’s novel “Namaku Subardjo”. From the novel, data and object of the research was obtained. The data are in the forms of sentences or dialogues and story units that lead to the correlation between politics and youth. The theoretical foundation is Terry Eagleton's sociology of literature which emphasizes on political ideology. Steps of the research method are: 1) reading Hapsari Hanggarini’s novel “Namaku Subardjo” as a whole, 2) colleting data, 3) classifying the data, 4) analyzing and interpreting the data. The importance of the research is to show that young people must be able to play a role and understand politics in order to advance the Indonesian nation. The result of the research is the role of young people in politics for the sake of advancing the Indonesian nation. Therefore, the relationship between youth and politics is very close, as in the novel “Namaku Subardjo” of which, the main character as a young people began to move to build Indonesian politics. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan permasalahan kaum muda yang masih gagal dalam berpolitik yang terkandung dalam novel Namaku Subardjo karya Hapsari Hanggarini. Objek penelitian atau sumber data ialah novel Namaku Subardjo karya Hapsari Hanggarini. Data diperoleh dari kalimat atau dialog, dan satuan cerita yang mengarah pada korelasi politik dan kaum muda. Landasan teori yang diacu ialah sosiologi sastra Terry Eagleton yang menekankan pada ideologi politik. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu: 1) membaca novel Namaku Subardjo karya Hapsari Hanggarini secara keseluruhan, 2) menginventarisasi data, 3) mengklasifikasikan data, 4) menganalisis data dan menginterprestasikan data. Pentingnya penelitian ialah untuk menunjukkan bahwa kaum muda harus mampu berperan dan memahami politik demi memajukan bangsa Indonesia. Hasil penelitian ialah peran kaum muda dalam berpolitik sangat dibutuhkan oleh negara.  Oleh karena itu, hubungan antara kaum muda dan politik sangat erat, sama halnya dalam novel Namaku Subardjo, tokoh utama sebagai kaum muda mulai bergerak untuk membangun politik Indonesia.

Luxembourg is known for its cultural and national diversity. Approximately 48% of the population is foreigners live in Luxembourg. For 15-29-year-olds, this share wasapproximately 42% in 2019 and 2020. Furthermore, approximately 185,000 foreign workers commute to Luxembourg daily. Considering this, Luxembourg is an interesting case for investigating national identity and political participation of a diverse society (STATEC 2020a, STATEC 2020b, STATEC 2021). Especially, as the biographies of young people in Luxembourg are becoming increasingly complex (e.g., mixed national parents; highly skilled expatriates), it is worth looking into different aspects and valuations of national identity and political participation of youth in Luxembourg (Amtépé and Hartmann-Hirsch, 2011). In this policy report, we look into the aspects of national identity and how young people living in Luxembourg define a ‘real Luxembourger’ using the Youth Survey Luxembourg (2019) data (Sozio et al., 2020). This will give us the opportunity to investigate what aspects of identity (e.g. Luxembourgish ancestry; the time spent living in Luxembourg) matter for young people to feel part of Luxembourgish society and how these change across different social backgrounds and demographics. The discourse about the interrelations of political participation and youth brings forward the dominant narrative of a disengaging and passive youth. Here, we also investigate these statements in the Luxembourgish context. We analyse the level of interest in politics across young people in Luxembourg and their means of political participation. Finally, we especially investigated the relationship between aspects of national identity, and political interest and engagement of young people in Luxembourg.

E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India nourishes the facet of superiority and inferiority, self and other between occident and orient revealed in Orientalism. Through the character analysis and the development of the plot, the writer shows the conflicts of these senses. The novel narrates the colonial exercise-the English’s rule in India and the relationship between the Indians and the English. The perceived idea, misconception, and colonial politics prevail in the two races. The characters from the English and the Indians find the oriental concept a barrier in their integration for giving pre-eminence of everything occidental and representing the oriental as an inferior other. On the other hand, though Chaudhuri in his travelogue, A Passage to England rounds with a preconceived idea formulated by the west, he feels doubt to meet the west. But he feels home with the west after meeting them. The writer, through his experience, tries to find out the explanation of the west’s negative view on the East. The article tries to explore whether a proper reconciliation or harmony is possible in the conflict of orient and occident following thesis-antithesis-synthesis through the comparative analysis of these books.

Presents a program of experimental research and its results. Examines the relationship between meaning-of-life and value orientations of graduates of various educational institutions: schools, colleges and the University and attitude toward the past, present and future of the Pskov region and opportunities. The comparative analysis of different groups of graduates in the studied characteristics was done.

This chapter examines the relationship between the historical events and the literature of 1800–15. It suggests that these years remain relatively understudied and identifies the important literary landmarks as they appeared to both contemporary and modern observers. It characterizes the period’s writing as ‘war literature’, examining Walter Scott’s status as ‘the “mighty minstrel” of the Antigallican war’ and exploring the rise of Lord Byron and Felicia Hemans within the context of the Peninsular War. The chapter investigates the relationship between literature and national identity following the Acts of Union, looking at the recovery of national literatures, the revival of the epic, and the emergence of the novel as the form best suited to negotiating issues of national identity. It concludes by examining how writers responded to the Industrial Revolution and the development of Great Britain’s global power, one aspect of this being the emergence of literary ‘Orientalism’.
