This study sought to find out the extent of use of biology teaching and learning resources and how it affects students’ academic performance. The study was carried out in public secondary schools in Siaya County. The researcher used a sample of twenty-three schools drawn from ninety two public secondary schools selected through stratified random sampling. Teacher respondents were purposively or randomly sampled. Purposive sampling was used to choose the most experienced biology teacher from two or more teachers teaching form two classes. Where there existed more than one long serving and experienced teachers teaching form two classes, random sampling was employed to pick one of them for interview. Student respondents were chosen through random sampling in single sex schools and stratified random sampling in mixed schools. Head teachers from each of the sampled schools were selected for personal interview. The data were collected using questionnaires, checklists, observation schedules and interview guides. Observation schedules were used by the researcher to ascertain use of resources by teachers and learners and the resultant tests used to determine the score differences in achievement between classes frequently taught using resources and those rarely taught using resources. Interviews with head teachers were used to countercheck the information given by teachers and students on utilization of resources. The findings of the study established that audio-visual resources were least usedin schools. The resources were mainly bought by the headteachers. The researcher’s assessment during live lesson teaching using observation schedules showed that students frequently taught using resources performed better than those rarely taught using the resources. The research also established that frequent use of resources was not the only factor determining high student’s academic performance but other factors like teacher’s qualification, pedagogy, attitudes and students’ entry behaviour also played a role in realizing improved academic performance in students.

This research paper investigated the challenges of virtual teaching and learning of a second language (English) in selected secondary schools, Isu Ikwuato L.A. Abia State, Nigeria. It used a mixed method convergent parallel research design. The purposive sampling technique was used to select secondary schools that adopted virtual teaching and learning. The targeted population was 2000 English students and teachers with a sample size of 333. The results revealed that the schools made use of synchronous, asynchronous and blended types of online teaching and learning, and the students had a positive attitude. Both students and teachers experienced challenges of poor network, lack of ICT training, unstable electricity, and financial constraint.
The major trust of this study was to examine the academic achievement of pahari students in
relation to their mental health. The present study was carried-out on sample of 200 pahari
students selected from 6 secondary schools of Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir through
stratified random sampling technique. Mental health scale developed by Dr. Mercy Abraham and Dr. K.C. Baby Prasanna was used to collect required information, while the total marks obtained by the students in the previous class were used as an achievement criterion. Two statistical techniques like Pearson’s product moment method and ‘t’ test were used to analyze the data. The study shows that there is a positive correlation between academic achievement and mental health of students. The result of the study further revealed significant differences between boys and girls as well as rural and urban students in regard to their mental health. On the basis of these findings some suggestions both for practice and further studies have been put forward by the author.

The research explored setback to, and encouragement of feedback as perceived by teachers and students. Three research questions guided the study. The population of the study constituted 180 teachers and 3200 students in government owned secondary schools in Ekwusigo L.G.A of Anambra State. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw the sample of teachers and students. Two questionnaires, one for teachers and one for students were used to collect data. Arithemetical mean was used in answering the research questions. The results revealed that all the stipulated factors constituted setbacks to teachers in giving feedback to their students. All the teachers indicated that all the listed items can encourage them in giving feedback to their students. Also, almost all the items except one constituted setback for the students in receiving feedback from their teachers. It was recommended that workload of teachers should be moderate, and the teacher should be relieved of other duties that may affect teaching and learning. The study investigated teacher’s demographic factors to ascertain teaching learning issues in Nigeria. As a descriptive survey, teachers and students in senior secondary schools in Ekiti State constituted the study population. The sample comprised of 288 teachers and 1920 students, randomly selected from 32 schools that were stratified, selected and drawn from 16 local government areas in Ekiti State. Four different measuring instruments were used to collect data. The data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using t-test. Findings from the documentary evidence revealed there is uneven distribution of teachers between sex and location, while statistical calculation results revealed that there is a difference between the effectiveness of male and female teachers as well as teachers from both urban and rural locations in the improvement of teaching and learning. The study recommended that government should do more to monitor implementation stages of its education policy with special regard to gender and locations of teachers. Serious and genuine implementation of policy is as important as its formulation. The inspectorate division of the ministry of education should take seriously the distribution of teachers and monitoring of what goes on in our classrooms, especially schools in rural areas where students expect ”miracle” passes.
