Since it is a productive skill, writing is considered one of the most crucial abilities in communication; nonetheless, EFL learners have difficulty composing texts which are both communicatively and linguistically competent. This study intends to explore the benefits of using authentic materials in EFL learners, with an emphasis on writing skills. To pursue this objective, fifty-two participants were chosen randomly from a B1 level (following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The participants were distributed into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The students were majoring in various degrees at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador (PUCE). In this case study, in which the application of authentic materials covered fifty percent of daily two-hour classes, data was collected through a structured pre-test, post-test, and an opinion survey. All data was analyzed using a rubric designed for this purpose. This research, which is based on the Communicative Language Teaching Approach, also deals with various concepts regarding authentic materials and researchers’ perceptions. The findings elicited positive results for students’ writing with the use of authentic materials skills and shed lights on participants’ opinions.

One of the factors affecting student learning outcomes is the learning process in the classroom. A teacher-centered learning process provides little learning experience for students. Student-centered learning needs to be developed so that students may experience meaningful learning and achieve good outcomes. The purpose of this study was to see the different cognitive learning outcomes caused by the implementation of two cooperative learning methods: jigsaw and TAI. The research method used is a quantitative quasi experiment with Nonequivalent Control Group Design. Student learning outcomes were measured by a post test. The difference in the learning outcomes were tested using a t-test. The research concludes that there is a significant difference of cognitive learning outcomes between students who are given cooperative learning jigsaw type (mean 43.14) and TAI (mean 47.85).

ABSTRAK BAHASA INDONESIA: Salah satu faktor yang memengaruhi hasil belajar siswa adalah proses pembelajaran di kelas. This is an experimental study in the area of Didactics applied to the learning of English as a foreign language and complemented by CALL. The main objective of this work is to know the degree of incidence existing between two groups of students: one, based on conference-style classes where students, guided by the teacher, have to search for information about a topic in the computer lab and present it in front of the class and, in the other, where students are taught by the teacher according to a printed text. The experimental design consisted of a pre-test/post-test plus the application of different techniques to develop the different linguistic and cognitive strategies, between these tests. The methodology used by the Experimental Group forced learners to generate their own knowledge, so they had to apply the information and work by themselves in Workshops; and the Control Group participated in the classroom according to the communicative approach, guided by the teacher in the traditional class. Statistics were applied to the scores obtained between both tests, and the scores obtained weekly in the different competences contributed to knowing whether there were significant differences between both groups.
