AbstractThere were 1525 applications for asylum in the Czech Republic in 2015, and 71 people were granted asylum. Despite this fact migration was the most covered topic in the Czech media (especially television news services) in 2015. The discussed events were labelled as a wave or flood and were framed as a crisis, threat, and risk not only by the journalists but by politicians as well. This paper is based on quantitative and qualitative research on migration and war refugees from August 17, 2015 to September 18, 2015 in six news programmes of the public service broadcaster, namely the Czech Radio. It is a qualitative case study of the program

AbstractSuccessful internal communication in an intercultural environment depends on the organizational culture, business environment, social responsibility, and leaders’ skills. Thus, internal communication and employee adaptation to changing business environments ask what a successful socially responsible internal communication requires. This contribution discusses theoretical foundations of qualitative research, how the organizational culture can define which direction the organization should chose to attain social responsibility, and how internal communication can improve understanding of professional language and be decisive in a working environment. The generated model offers insights into understanding social responsibility and organizational culture to improve internal communication.

The purpose of this study was to determine and analyze the communication process in the implementation of the BUMDes program in Pantae Village. This research is a type of qualitative research using Organizational Communication Theory in a policy implementation approach, which looks at the communication process within the organization, namely internal communication as well as external communication. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and document study. Data analysis used Miles and Huberman's model. The results obtained are that the internal communication process seen from vertical communication is still not running well, instructions for tasks and work from the head of BUMDes to BUMDes executives are not carried out and communication in terms of reporting and accountability is not carried out properly. Horizontal communication in the implementation of the BUMDes program has been carried out well, the process of delivering messages is carried out well, but there are obstacles in the form of frequency for communicating which are still lacking. In the context of external communication carried out by BUMDes, it was found that the communication process between BUMDes and the Inspectorate of TTU Regency had been carried out properly and in the form of formal communication, the obstacle encountered was the inability of BUMDes officials in compiling financial accountability reports which resulted in obstruction of the communication process. While the results of research related to BUMDes communication with the community, it was found that the communication process was not carried out properly. The low level of community participation is caused by the fact that the communication that is built is not participative communication.

“If I had realised you were interviewing me about science, I probably wouldn’t have agreed to do it” – this quote from an interviewee raises one of the key methodological issues facing researchers in the field of religion and science. The perception that one ought to be an ‘expert’ in science before one can be interviewed on the topic makes the recruitment of participants in qualitative and quantitative research particularly problematic. However, it does tell us something important about the way people understand ‘science’ and the increasing pressure on church leaders to be held accountable for anything they say in the public domain. In this chapter, Raid reflect on her experiences as a sociologist carrying out research on clergy attitudes towards science using both quantitative and qualitative research methods. She discusses the implications of having self-selecting interviewees as well as the challenges in creating a survey that accurately reflects the respondents’ views. Moreover, she outlines some of the key findings from the research and how some of these are intertwined with the aforementioned methodological issues.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine organizational leadership in a traditional, non-western country where citizens’ happiness drives the practices of the public administration managers. Design/methodology/approach This study uses the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to examine leadership in a traditional, non-western country where organizational change dominates the public sector. Triangulation of quantitative and qualitative research methods is used. Findings Triangulation of quantitative and qualitative research methods reveals that the way managers respond to organizational change leads to utilizing an adaptive leadership style; a mixture of dynamic and rigid practices. Organizational change creates peculiar circumstances that make it thus imperative for managers to mix transformational and transactional practices in order to not only survive, but also excel. While some of the findings conform to those of previous studies, they indicate that the MLQ does not seem to adequately reflect the impact of organizational change on leadership. The study also provides evidence that adaptive leadership is driven by cultural and organizational necessities. Research limitations/implications The limitations of the study can be avoided in future research. In particular, the number of interviews has limited the ability to better reflect all dimensions of the adaptive leadership style. Due to time and resource availability, the inability to focus more on the individual level of the cultural factor and its impact on leadership style may have limited the scope of the analysis. Finally, the present study did not examine the cultural variations within the United Arab Emirates universal culture especially in relationship with region, age group, and gender of the managers. Originality/value The paper examines leadership in the Middle East context where rare studies in leadership have been conducted. The study also examines the usability of MLQ in Arab context where organizational change persists.
