The special session aims at discussing an integrated approach of the different efforts to increase and promote the teaching and learning of astronomy in the world, with emphasis on developing countries. To this end, attention will be given to research on education, specifically in the field of physics, to best practices of the use of astronomy in educational systems (specifically in developing countries), and to innovative learning initiatives other than formal education. The Special Session aims also at creating a universal perspective wherein modern (post-Copernican) astronomy will presented as an intellectual cumulus. The objective of the session is to disseminate best practices in teaching and learning activities of astronomy and to give an opportunity to learn about initiatives in different cultural and socio-economic settings. The special session also wants to give food-for-thought and proposals for reflection for an integrative approach, and for optimization processes, to enhance the interest in astronomy and its role as a trigger towards science education in the educational systems, with emphasis on the developing countries. The outcome should be a sensitization of teachers and students alike to the concept of a universal history of astronomy and creation of some reliable source material which can be used as a teaching aid in a culture-specific context. The outcome could be a set of recommendations for future integrated actions, and eventually recommendations on new initiatives, framed into the new decadal policy plan.

Universities in Latin American countries are undergoing major changes in its institutional and academic settings. One strategy for continuous improvement of teaching and learning process is the incorporation of methods and teaching aids seeking to develop scientific research skills in students from their undergraduate studies. The aim of this study is the validation of a questionnaire to measure research skills with engineering students.Questionnaire validation was performed by: literature review, semantic and content validation by experts from three Latin American universities, finishing with a factorial and reliability validation. The instrument was applied to 150 students (75,3% men and 24,7% women) that were enrolled in the basic level of engineering. The validated questionnaire has 20 items. The correlations between factors of the instrument, show relationship and dependence between them, indicating the validity of the questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which reached a value of .91 in the total scale. The statistical results to validate the questionnaire have been significant, allowing us to propose this experience as a starting point to implement further studies about the development of research skills in university’s students from other areas of knowledge.

This study aims to obtain a description of the supporting and inhibiting factors in the process of organizational change of education based on management perspective that occurs in the scope of higher health education of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. This study used a qualitative approach by conducting case study at Palangka Raya Health Polytechnic. The research results are as follows: (a) Supporting factor that must be there is the existence of a manual or technical guidance in organizing the organization; (b) Whereas the inhibiting factor is the old habits, the mindset, the mental model is still inhibiting from the organizers and members of the organization; (c) The inhibiting factor is the existence of selfishness of each highly visible party; (d) Inhibitors may also occur if there are still "little kings" and selfishness from each of the former institutions; (e) Other issues that support in this process of change are in terms of facilities and infrastructure, namely the availability of buildings and land; (f) Another inhibiting factor is that in terms of educational qualifications, there are departments that do not meet, for example in the midwifery department there are still many average teachers with Diploma IV education background and non-linear education; (g) Inhibiting factors may also occur if the reason of seniority is always carried around; (h) The inhibiting factor is lack of human resources in using modern health equipment, including the use of teaching aids in accordance with the progress of science and teaching and learning technology.

Abstract South African Sign Language (SASL) has become an increasingly popular language that hearing university students want to learn as a second language. This requires more qualified SASL instructors and new curricula at South African universities. This paper considers ways in which challenges associated with the teaching and learning of SASL can be overcome. Krashen’s Comprehension Input Hypothesis and Swain’s Output Hypothesis form the theoretical framework as reference to our own independent experience, praxis, and reflection. This study considered different teaching methods and pedagogies and found the post-method approach suggested by Kumaravadivelu (2003) a viable method for teaching SASL as a second language. This method aligns with the method we had independently identified as the most empowering for teachers to create their own strategies focused on their intuition, experiences and pedagogy. Therefore, we do not favour one specific method above another, but rather adopt an integrated approach. We make a few suggestions regarding sign language curriculum content and further research in sign language as an L2, which need urgent attention.

Boyle's law is used to explain the inverse relationship between pressure and the volume of gas at a constant temperature. This law states that when the pressured container is filled by increasing gas, thus the total volume will decrease. This research paper aims to study the level of student acceptance of teaching based on teaching aids (TA) Boyle's Law Apparatus (BLA) in the teaching and learning for the DJJ20063 Thermodynamics course. The questionnaire study was distributed to 66 respondents, namely Port Dickson Polytechnic‟s students of semester 2, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering program December 2019 session who involved in lectures where TA is used to give the students a clear vision in understanding the concept of Boyle Law in the topic of Perfect Gas. The data were analysed by using SPSS software through descriptive analysis statistics. The results of the study showed that the level of effectiveness of this TA is at a high level with an average mean score of 3.70 and standard deviation 0.447. Therefore, studies showed that the use of this teaching aids among students provides a better understanding, especially on the topic of Perfect Gas compared to teaching methods without the teaching aids that had been produced before. Through this method as well, the study found that students' interest and determination to deepen a lesson can be nurtured in more depth.

The utilization of teaching aids is crucial in enhancing students’ mathematical process skills. However, teachers give less accentuation on this aspect of usage which leads to students’ low competence in mathematical process skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a developed teaching aids, in particular, a Smart Kit in enhancing mathematical process skills and achievement among selected primary school students in Hulu Kinta, Perak. The experimental method was used in this study. Cluster sampling was used to select the samples. The samples were divided into two groups, the control and treatment groups which each consisted of 36 respondents. The treatment group was engaged with the developed Smart Kit while the students in the control group followed the conventional method of teaching and learning. Measurement and Geometry topics at primary school level were selected and students’ mathematical process skills were assessed based on Malaysia Assessment and Curriculum Standard Documents. The findings revealed that there was a significant difference in problem solving, reasoning and connecting skills between the control group and the treatment group. Furthermore, the mathematical achievement of the treatment group was higher than the control group. In conclusion, the utilization of the developed Smart Kit enhanced students’ problem solving, reasoning and connecting skills, and improved mathematical achievement. In implicative insinuation, the use of the developed Smart Kit can help teachers and students in teaching and learning processes specifically on the topics of Measurement and Geometry.

Culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) which provides a general framework for working with culturally and linguistically diverse learners has become the reality in the contemporary elementary classroom in Canada and around the world. This theory-to-practice article presents five research-based teaching practices which make a tangible impact on students’ academic vocabulary learning, their academic literacy, and longitudinal educational success. The author illustrates how this vocabulary can be identified, clustered, and contextualized within the frame of a thematic unit. The reader is invited to a classroom in Quebec via a video clip of a dual-language book project that illustrates how principles and practices of CRP can be applied in an FSL setting.
