The article discusses some methods for numerically finding the roots of nonlinear equations, which are determined by numerical methods using the construction of a spreadsheet Microsoft Excel and an application in the Visual Basic for Applications environment. The simplest methods are used: the binary division method and the chord method. The article presents the construction of spreadsheets, the algorithm, the method of creation the VBA application, and the text of the corresponding procedures. The material of the article can be used in informatics courses, both at school and at university, for the development of interdisciplinary connections between informatics and mathematics and expanding ideas about the possibilities of spreadsheets. The problems presented in the article were successfully solved by 10th grade students (profile "Mathematics. Informatics") and first-year students of pedagogical university of the profiles "Physics. Mathematics", "Physics. Informatics". Assessing the competencies of students is an important and challenging task. The article presents the experience of evaluating the universal competencies of students. We created individual and group exercises, criteria for evaluating the results of these exercises for assessing the universal competencies of students. In addition to expert evaluation, students were interviewed to identify their self-esteem. The created assessment tools were used for several years at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Pskov State University to assess the universal competencies of first year students (more than 200 students participated). Some research results are analyzed in the article.

AbstractIn recent years, there has been a surge in research in spatial thinking across the international community. We now know that spatial skills are malleable and that they are linked to success across multiple disciplines, most notably Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). While spatial skills have been examined by cognitive scientists in laboratory environments for decades, current research is examining how these skills can be developed in field-based environments. In this paper, we present findings from a study within a Technology Teacher preparation programme where we examined first-year students’ spatial skills on entry to university. We explain why it was necessary to embed a spatial skills intervention into Year 1 of the programme and we describe the impact that this had on students’ spatial scores and on academic performance. The findings from our study highlight a consistent gender gap in spatial scores at the start of the first-year with female students entering the Technology Teacher preparation programme at a lower base level than male students. We describe how we integrated spatial development activities into an existing course and how an improvement in spatial scores and overall course performance was observed. The paper concludes by discussing the long-term sustainability of integrating spatial interventions within teacher preparation programmes while also highlighting the importance of future research to examine spatial skills as a fundamental component of technological capability.

In laboratory classes on invertebrate zoology for first-year students of the Biology and Ecology Faculty of the Y. Kupala Grodno State University current control of knowledge in a test form is carried out. The number of questions in the task is 11–20, 5– 10 minutes for execution are allotted, one, two or more correct answers are selected from the proposed options. For each correct answer, a point is set; for erroneous answers, penalty points are entered. The regular use of test control increased the level of students' assimilation of educational material and optimized the current control of knowledge.

The Introduction to Engineering (ITE) and Industrial Seminar and Profession (ISP) courses conducted at School of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, are integrated courses which implement the Cooperative Problem-based Learning (CPBL) methods in the same semester. Based on this integrated courses, the main aim of this paper is to investigate the qualitative impact of spreadsheet hands-on seminar on the first year students' digital skill. At the beginning of the semester, students are given sustainability-based project to work on, which requires them to collect and to report the data in a series of presentations and written reports. In order to present those data, they need to use analysis tools such as a spreadsheet software. The students are introduced with some in-depth applications of the Microsoft Excel software through the seminar sessions in the ISP course. With the knowledge that the students gain, they are expected to implement it in the CPBL project. A qualitative approach has been adopted to implement the study. Student’s reflections were used as the data source to identify common attributes that they have managed to gain from seminar sessions. This study has found that all students had primarily learned about digital skills. They perceived hand-on activity during the seminar as a good platform to acquire knowledge on basic calculation and developed learning skill on Excel. Moreover, students recognized the skills they are learning will be useful in other courses and future careers.

The article is devoted to the overview of one of the most current problems that arise in the process of supporting the adaptation of students. The paper reveals the content of the adaptation process, its content and procedural characteristics, describes the types and stages, and directions of diagnostics. The aim of the work is to identify the features of adaptation in first-year students, including the description of the specifics of difficulties of non-resident students’ adaption. The study was conducted at the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology “Petrozavodsk State University” with first-year students studying in the fields of education 44.03.02 Psychological and pedagogical education, 44.03.01. Pedagogical education, 44.03.03 Special (defectologic) education. The following methods were used to test the hypothesis: «I am a student» survey, «Scale of subjective well-being» method, analysis of documents (medical records of students), quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results of the study. Analysis of the results of the study showed that non-resident students have both general and specific difficulties of adaptation due to the breakdown of previous family and friendships, lack of emotional support, difficult living conditions, a new neighborhood, a new type of settlement, etc. The obtained results are used for development and implementation of measures to support students during the adaptation period.

Situation cognition theory describes the context of a learning activity’s effect on learner’s cognition. In this paper, we use situated cognition theory to examine the effect of product dissection on product redesign activities. Two research questions were addressed: 1) Does situated cognition, in the form of product dissection, improve product functionality during redesign exercise?, and 2) Does situation cognition, again in the form of product dissection, affect the creativity of product redesigns? In this study, three sections of first year students in two different locations — The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (S&T) — performed product redesign using either an electric toothbrush or a coffee maker. The redesigned products have been analyzed with respect to both depth (detail level) and creativity.

In this study, a tool has been designed and developed for learning about the concept of lag order within a dynamic model, which can be used in any teaching classes on statistics and financial data computation. To show a solution for a complex and multi-step process of finding the optimal lag order for multiple variables data series based on an information criterion a module using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) for Microsoft Excel (MS Excel) is being developed. This module can be used for estimating a multivariate dynamic model as well as determining the optimal lag order of such a model.

This paper presents arguments for the use of direct steam generation (DSG) in preference to other forms of generation in particular locations according to the prevailing environmental and economic conditions. In addition, the paper describes the development of a software tool based on Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which draws upon established physical relationships in the heat transfer literature to perform plant capacity calculations in a fast and convenient manner. The results of the VBA program determine the solar fraction of the plant, assuming that the plant is in operation for 10 h per day (07:30–17:30 hours), the solar fraction is shown to be 76% and the DSG plant achieves a 76% reduction in emissions. Construction costs are also estimated based on formulae from previous work.
