Mechanical properties of friction stir welded (FSWed), double sided arc welded (DSAWed), fiber laser welded (FLWed) and diode laser welded (DLWed) on AZ31B Mg alloy were studied. After welding, grains at the centre became recrystallized. Brittle phase β-Mg₁₇AI₁₂ particles observed at the centre of the joint during fusion welding process. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and fatigue strength were lower in the FDWed samples than in the DSAWed samples. Welding defect at the bottom of the FDWed joint was observed when right hand thread (RHT) weld tool was considered. In FLWed joint, YS, UTS and fatigue strength, with a joint efficiency of ~91% was achieved while the YS, UTS and fatigue strength of the DLWed joints were notably lower. The DSAWed joints and DLWed joints exhibited a higher strain hardening capacity in comparison with the FSWed joints and FLWed joints, respectively.

Friction stir welding is a solid-state welding technique for joining metals such as aluminum alloys quickly and reliably. This article presents a design of experiments approach (central composite face–centered factorial design) for predicting and optimizing the process parameters of dissimilar friction stir welded AA6351–AA5083. Three weld parameters that influence weld quality were considered, namely, tool shoulder profile (flat grooved, partial impeller and full impeller), rotational speed and welding speed. Experimental results detailing the variation of the ultimate tensile strength as a function of the friction stir welding process parameters are presented and analyzed. An empirical model that relates the friction stir welding process parameters and the ultimate tensile strength was obtained by utilizing a design of experiments technique. The models developed were validated by an analysis of variance. In general, the full impeller shoulder profile displayed the best mechanical properties when compared to the other profiles. Electron backscatter diffraction maps were used to correlate the metallurgical properties of the dissimilar joints with the joint mechanical properties as obtained experimentally and subsequently modeled. The optimal friction stir welding process parameters, to maximize ultimate tensile strength, are identified and reported.

Additive Friction Stir (AFS) has the potential for extensive future application in metal based additive manufacturing. Powder based AFS is specifically useful for fabricating functionally graded structures. But, the consolidation of powder inside the hollow tool used in this operation hinders the powder based AFS process. This problem could be resolved by Additive Friction Stir Processing (AFSP) while maintaining the key advantages of AFS. A 3D deposit structure of height 5 mm and width 64 mm was made from Al6061 alloy powder by AFSP. Mechanical properties like ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and micro-hardness of the deposit were evaluated in both longitudinal and transverse directions. The ultimate tensile strength and micro-hardness of the deposit were comparable to Al6061-O and there was a significant increment in tensile yield strength. Also, the isotropic nature of the deposit could be inferred from similar mechanical properties in the longitudinal and transverse direction. Dimple ruptures seen in fractographic analysis gave evidence to the ductile nature of the deposit.

AbstractThe tunnel defect formed in friction stir weld would dramatically push the mechanical properties of joints into deterioration. In this study, friction stir welding process was adopted to repair the joints of 7N01 aluminum alloy with tunnel defect. The effects of friction stir repair welding process on the microstructure and mechanical properties were comprehensively investigated. Microstructure of the repaired joints shows that the grain size in nugget zone decreases slightly while the recrystallization in the retreating side of thermo-mechanically affected zone is intensified as the joints are repaired. The microhardness of the repaired joints declined slightly compared with the defective joint. However, the yield strength and tensile strength increase and recover to the values of the joints free of defect. The longitudinal residual stress in weld zone increased remarkably as the repair times increase. Compared with the once repaired joint, yield strength and tensile strength of the twice repaired joint reduced slightly, and the throat thickness also reduced during the repeated repair welding process. Therefore, the times of repair welding applied should be limited actually.

Friction stir welding is a modern pressure welding process, which is particularly suitable for aluminum alloys. Several studies have been conducted to investigate the interrelations between the process parameters, such as the welding speed and the tool rotational speed, and the resulting mechanical properties of the joint. This study explored the connections between the surface topography of the welds, such as the flash height and the seam underfill, and their mechanical properties (ultimate tensile strength; elongation at break; and Vickers hardness). For this purpose, a total of 54 welding experiments at three different welding speeds were conducted using the aluminum alloy EN AW-6082-T6. The welded specimens were examined using visual inspection, topographic analysis, metallography, hardness measurements, and uniaxial tensile tests. Afterward, a statistical analysis was performed in order to determine the correlation coefficients between the surface topography and the mechanical properties of the welds. The strongest correlations were between the surface topography and the ultimate tensile strength. Thereby, the most pronounced relations were found between the seam underfill as well as the arc texture formation of the weld and its ultimate tensile strength. The interrelations between the surface topography and the elongation at break, as well as the hardness of the welds, were less pronounced. The higher the welding speed became, the less pronounced the interrelations were. The results show the potential of a non-destructive monitoring system based on the topography to support the prediction of the acceptability of welded parts.

It is expected that the demand for Metal Matrix Composite (MMCs) will increase in these applications in the aerospace and automotive industries sectors, strengthened AMC has different advantages over monolithic aluminium alloy as it has characteristics between matrix metal and reinforcement particles.  However, adequate joining technique, which is important for structural materials, has not been established for (MMCs) yet. Conventional fusion welding is difficult because of the irregular redistribution or reinforcement particles.  Also, the reaction between reinforcement particles and aluminium matrix as weld defects such as porosity in the fusion zone make fusion welding more difficult. The aim of this work was to show friction stir welding (FSW) feasibility for entering Al 6061/5 to Al 6061/18 wt. % SiCp composites has been produced by using stir casting technique. SiCp is added as reinforcement in to Aluminium alloy (Al 6061) for preparing metal matrix composite. This method is less expensive and very effective. Different rotational speeds,1000 and 1800 rpm and traverse speed 10 mm \ min was examined. Specimen composite plates having thick 10 mm were FS welded successfully. A high-speed steel (HSS) cylindrical instrument with conical pin form was used for FSW. The outcome revealed that the ultimate tensile strength of the welded joint (Al 6061/18 wt. %) was 195 MPa at rotation speed 1800 rpm, the outcome revealed that the ultimate tensile strength of the welded joint (Al 6061/18 wt.%) was 165 MPa at rotation speed 1000 rpm, that was very near to the composite matrix as-cast strength. The research of microstructure showed the reason for increased joint strength and microhardness. The microstructural study showed the reason (4 %) for higher joint strength and microhardness.  due to Significant   of SiCp close to the boundary of the dynamically recrystallized and thermo mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) was observed through rotation speed 1800 rpm. The friction stir welded ultimate tensile strength Decreases as the volume fraction increases of SiCp (18 wt.%).

Purpose Vibratory weld conditioning parameters have a great influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of weld connections. The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of vibratory weld conditioning on the mechanical and microstructural characterization of aluminum 5052 alloy weldments. An attempt is made to understand the effect of the vibratory tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process parameters on the hardness, ultimate tensile strength and microstructure of Al 5052-H32 alloy weldments. Design/methodology/approach Aluminum 5052 H32 specimens are welded at different combinations of vibromotor voltage inputs and time of vibrations. Voltage input is varied from 50 to 230 V at an interval of 10 V. At each voltage input to the vibromotor, there are three levels of time of vibration, i.e. 80, 90 and 100 s. The vibratory TIG-welded specimens are tested for their mechanical and microstructural properties. Findings The results indicate that the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy weld connections improved by increasing voltage input up to 160 V. Also, it has been observed that by increasing vibromotor voltage input beyond 160 V, mechanical properties were reduced significantly. It is also found that vibration time has less influence on the mechanical properties of weld connections. Improvement in hardness and ultimate tensile strength of vibratory welded joints is 16 and 14%, respectively, when compared without vibration, i.e. normal weld conditions. Average grain size is measured as per ASTM E 112–96. Average grain size is in the case of 0, 120, 160 and 230 is 20.709, 17.99, 16.57 and 20.8086 µm, respectively. Originality/value Novel vibratory TIG welded joints are prepared. Mechanical and micro-structural properties are tested.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of the Mg88.5Zn5Y6.5-XREX (RE = Yb and Ce, X = 0, 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5) (wt.%) alloys were investigated in the present study. Mg88.5Zn5Y6.5 is composed of three phases, namely, α-Mg, long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases, and intermetallic compounds. The content of the LPSO phases decreased with the addition of Ce and Yb, and no LPSO phases were detected in Mg88.5Zn5Y2.0Yb4.5. The alloys containing the LPSO phases possessed a stratified microstructure and exhibited excellent mechanical properties. Mg88.5Zn5Y5.0Ce1.5 exhibited the highest creep resistance and mechanical strength at both room temperature and 200 °C, owing to its suitable microstructure and high thermal stability. The yield strength of Mg88.5Zn5Y5.0Ce1.5 at room temperature was 358 MPa. The ultimate tensile strength of Mg88.5Zn5Y5.0Ce1.5 at room temperature and 200 °C was 453 MPa and 360 MPa, respectively.

In the present study, a friction welding process was adopted to join dissimilar alloys of Ti-Al-4V to Nitinol. The effect of friction welding on the evolution of welded macro and microstructures and their hardnesses and tensile properties were studied and discussed in detail. The macrostructure of Ti-6Al-4V and Nitinol dissimilar joints revealed flash formation on the Ti-6Al-4V side due to a reduction in flow stress at high temperatures during friction welding. The optical microstructures revealed fine grains near the Ti-6Al-4V interface due to dynamic recrystallization and strain hardening effects. In contrast, the area nearer to the nitinol interface did not show any grain refinement. This study reveals that the formation of an intermetallic compound (Ti2Ni) at the weld interface resulted in poor ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation values. All tensile specimens failed at the weld interface due to the formation of intermetallic compounds.

Warm rolling is one of the thermomechanical method has several advantages such as produces high mechanical properties, but does not decrease % elongation and toughness value because partial recrystallization phenomenon that produces micron-sized new grain. This paper reports the results of an investigation carried out on the effects of holding time annealing to mechanical properties Cu-Zn 70/30 alloy. These alloy after homogenization process and quenched in the air then heated to temperature of 300°C, later the heated copper samples are warm rolled at 25%, 30%, and 35% reduction, after that heated at temperature 300°C and held during 120 minutes. Then sample is experienced rewarm rolling with reduction 25%, 30%, and 35%. The results obtained showed that the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength are higher proportional with the increasing of % reduction, their values are 501,1 MPa; 599,3 MPa; later decrease to 546, 5 MPa and to yield strength are 441,8 MPa; 466,1 MPa; then decrease to 458,6 MPa. Moreover hardness value increase proportional with % reduction such as 154 HV; 162 HV; after that decrease to 160 HV While, % elongation decreases inversely proportional with % reduction namely 12,4%; 8,2%; later increase to 11,2 %. It is caused of the partial recrystallization phenomenon as evidenced by the presence micron-sized.AbstrakWarm rolling merupakan salah satu metode termomekanik yang mempunyai beberapa keuntungan yaitu salah satunya menghasilkan sifat mekanik yang tinggi, namun tidak mengurunkan nilai keuletan karena adanya fenomena rekristalisasi parsial yang menghasilkan butiran baru berbentuk micron. Paper ini menjelaskan tentang hasil penelitian berupa pengaruh persentase reduksi terhadap sifat mekanis paduan Cu-Zn 70/30. Paduan Cu-Zn 70/30 setelah dilakukan proses homogenisasi dan didinginkan di udara lalu dipanaskan ke suhu 300°C, kemudian masing-masing dilakukan warm rolling dengan persentase reduksi sebesar 25%, 30%, dan 35% kemudian ditahan di suhu 300°C dalam waktu 120 menit. Selanjutnya sampel dilakukan rewarm rolling dengan persentase reduksi sebesar 25%, 30%, dan 35%. Hasil penelitian yang dilakukan antara lain nilai kekuatan tarik (UTS dan YS) yang semakin tinggi sebanding dengan peningkatan % reduksi warm rolling yaitu masing-masing untuk nilai UTS sebesar 501,1 MPa; 599,3 MPa; lalu menurun menjadi 546,5 MPa serta untuk nilai kekuatan luluh sebesar 441,8 MPa; 466,1 MPa; lalu menurun menjadi 458,6 MPa. Selain itu, nilai kekerasan meningkat sebanding dengan peningkatan % reduksi warm rolling masing-masing sebesar 154 HV; 162 HV; lalu menurun menjadi 160 HV. Sedangkan persentase elongasi semakin menurun berbanding terbalik dengan peningkatan % reduksi masing-masing sebesar 12,4%; 8,2%; lalu meningkat menjadi 11,2%. Hal tersebut disebabkan karena adanya fenomena rekristalisasi parsial yang dibuktikan dengan kehadiran butir kecil berukuran mikron.Keywords : Cu-Zn 70/30 alloy, warm rolling, anneal, % reduction, mechanical properties
