Abstract                 Sleep is one of the basic human needs. Good quality sleep can increase the improvement of the disease. Sleep disturbances are common among hospitalized patients in CCU and ICU. The purpose of this literature review is to compare several research results on non-pharmacological therapies (eye masks, earplugs, music therapy, turning off lights, environmental modifications) in improving sleep quality to determine the best nursing action and safe for treating sleep disorders patients. Search articles using the PICO framework in the database; Google Scholar, Ebscho, Science direct, Elseiver, MedLine, CINAHL, PubMed, and ProQuest, limited to the last 10 years; 2011 to 2021, 10 International Journals were obtained. Improved sleep quality can be done in several ways; the use of eye masks, earplugs, music therapy, light and sound reduction, switching treatment schedules outside of bedtime, and combinations. The results of the review show schedules outside of bedtime, and combinations. The results of the review show that the most effective actions applied locally to improve sleep quality are reducing lighting and noise and diverting treatment schedules outside of bedtime because it is easy, safe, and does not cost money. If the intervention has not helped, eye masks, earplugs, and/or music can be offered according to the patient's choice, local culture, and facilities available at the hospital. Further research is needed on patients outside the ICU/CCU with a larger number of samples, different age and condition characteristics, longer treatment duration, and using objective sleep quality measurement tools such as polysomnography.

PurposeThe purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of air mattress pressure on sleep quality.Design/methodology/approachTen young healthy males participated in all hard surface [AH], shoulder soft [SS] and shoulder and hip soft mattress [SHS] conditions. The surface pressure for SS and SHS were set at their preferred levels.FindingsThe results showed that sleep efficiencies were over 95% for all the three conditions; there were no significant differences in individual sleep variables among the three conditions, but overall sleep quality was better for SS than AH (p = 0.065); heart rates during sleep was greater for AH than the other two conditions (p < 0.1); and a stronger relationship between clothing and bed microclimate humidity were found for SS and SHS than that for AH.Research limitations/implicationsThese results indicated that the both pressure relief air mattresses that were set at their own preferred levels provided high quality sleep with no marked differences.Practical implicationsAir pressure relief mattresses can improve sleep quality of healthy individuals during sleep at night. The results can be used to understand appropriate pressure distribution on surface mattress according to body region, and also to develop algorithms to provide optimum sleep using mattresses with surface pressure control by body region.Originality/valueThe present study found that the shoulder and/or hip pressure relief air mattresses that were set at their own preferred levels provided high quality sleep with no marked differences.

Background: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the effects of laughter yoga exercises on anxiety and sleep quality in patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Methods: In the study a semi-empirical and applied research design was used, which involved a pre-test and post-test, and appropriate control group. The study consisted of 24 patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease who were referred and admitted to Hazarate Raoul Allah Hospital in Tehran, Iran. The patients ranged in age from 55 to 75 and met the study criteria prior to entering the research study. The patients were randomly divided into two groups – control or experimental (n=12 per group). After completing exercises (laughter yoga), post-evaluation of anxiety and sleep quality of patients in both groups were conducted using questionnaires. For normalization of research data, the Mann-Whitney nonparametric test was used. Statistical analyses were conducted using the SPSS software, with the statistically significant level set at P<0.05. Results: The Mann-Whitney tests indicated that there was a significant difference between the  average stress change as well as sleep quality in patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease (versus control subjects) following laughter yoga exercises. Indeed, regarding sleep quality laughter yoga was only effective on the subjective quality of sleep and latency in sleeping. There was no observation of a significant effect on the duration of sleep, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping pills, or daily functions of the patients. Conclusion: The results of the present study demonstrate that laughter yoga exercises can reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality in patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. As a result, laughter yoga exercises may be beneficial as a complementary therapy with standard treatment methods to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality in patients with Parkinson's.

Sleep disturbances are common among patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU); however, these issues tend to receive less attention because critical care is prioritized in seriously ill patients. Recent studies have reported that sleep disturbances in patients admitted to the ICU are associated with delirium, weakened immunity, long-term cognitive decline, and persistent sleep disorders. Sleep disturbances in the ICU are attributable to the disease per se and also to the ICU environment that is not conducive to good sleep. Continuous exposure to light and noise are major environmental risk factors that disrupt the circadian rhythm and interfere with deep sleep. Sleep analysis using polysomnography in patients admitted to the ICU typically reveals increase in sleep latency, sleep fragmentation, and decreased stage N3 and rapid eye movement sleep, which are associated with poor prognosis even in patients with severe neurological conditions, including traumatic brain injury and intracranial hemorrhage. Polysomnography is the gold standard for objective evaluation of sleep; however, its applicability is limited in ICU settings, and novel methods such as continuous electroencephalographic spectral analysis and actigraphy have recently been proposed in clinical practice. Efforts to reduce nighttime light and noise (which are modifiable environmental factors) can improve sleep quality. In this article, the author reviews the studies that discuss characteristics of sleep disturbances, the associated risk factors and their correlation with prognosis among patients admitted to the ICU, as well as possible strategies to improve sleep quality in this patient population.

Athletes often experience sleep disturbances and poor sleep as a consequence of extended travel, the timing of training and competition (i.e., early morning or evening), and muscle soreness. Nutrition plays a vital role in sports performance and recovery, and a variety of foods, beverages, and supplements purportedly have the capacity to improve sleep quality and quantity. Here, we review and discuss relevant studies regarding nutrition, foods, supplements, and beverages that may improve sleep quality and quantity. Our narrative review was supported by a semi-systematic approach to article searching, and specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, such that articles reviewed were relevant to athletes and sporting environments. Six databases—PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, EMBASE, SPORTDiscus, and Google Scholar—were searched for initial studies of interest from inception to November 2020. Given the paucity of sleep nutrition research in the athlete population, we expanded our inclusion criteria to include studies that reported the outcomes of nutritional interventions to improve sleep in otherwise healthy adults. Carbohydrate ingestion to improve sleep parameters is inconclusive, although high glycemic index foods appear to have small benefits. Tart cherry juice can promote sleep quantity, herbal supplements can enhance sleep quality, while kiwifruit and protein interventions have been shown to improve both sleep quality and quantity. Nutritional interventions are an effective way to improve sleep quality and quantity, although further research is needed to determine the appropriate dose, source, and timing in relation to training, travel, and competition requirements.

Background: Quality sleep is needed by breast cancer patients in order to maintain good physical condition and immune system. Nurses have a role as educators who provide health education. Health education that can be given is non-pharmacological therapy, namely music therapy and PMR to improve sleep quality. Health education for patients is felt to be very important considering that patients are not always hospitalized so that it is hoped that with health education, patients can carry out care independently at home.Methods: The way of implementing community service activities is carried out by exposing non-pharmacological therapies with nurses who are in charge of the chemotherapy room. After being given the material, the selected nurse will apply the therapy to the patient in order to improve the quality of sleep for breast cancer patients who are given chemotherapy.Results: The provision of music therapy and PMR had a positive effect on breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Most of the patients involved in this service reported an improvement in the quality of sleep.Discussion: Good quality sleep is needed by breast cancer patients to regenerate and repair body cells. Music therapy combined with PMR is effective in reducing physical arousal activity which results in decreased muscle tone so that sleep quality can be fulfilled.

Poor sleep quality is a common problem among medical students and often leads to daytime hypersomnolence and fatigue. Having a good sleep hygiene is considered to be an effective way to improve sleep quality. The purpose of this study is to assess students' sleep hygiene awareness and practices and evaluate their sleep quality. The association of sleep quality with sleep hygiene awareness and practice was also explored. The study was a cross-sectional, self-administered, and questionnaire-based study. A total of 262 UniKL RCMP MBBS students were recruited to complete sleep questionnaires adopted from internationally recognized instruments, like Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI); to assess sleep hygiene and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI); to assess sleep quality. It was found that more than half of the participants (57.3%) had good knowledge on sleep hygiene. However, most of them (82.4%) had poor sleep hygiene practice. 65.6% of the students were also found to have poor sleep quality. Sleep quality was strongly correlated with sleep hygiene practice (p< 0.01) but not with sleep hygiene knowledge (p> 0.05). Appropriate measures and sleep hygiene education should be emphasized in order to raise awareness on the importance of adopting a good practice of sleep hygiene among the students.

These include frequent nighttime intrusions, insomnia related to pain and unfamiliar environments, dark conditions during the day with loss of natural light, and disruption of natural sleep cycle due to illness. Sleep wake disturbances can result in deleterious consequence on physical, emotional and cognitive status, which may impact patient satisfaction, clinical recovery, and hospital length of stay. Despite this, clinicians frequently fail to document sleep disturbances and are generally unaware of best practices to improve sleep quality in the hospital. The purpose of this review is to discuss sleep disturbances in hospitalized patients with a focus on causes of sleep disturbance, effect of poor quality sleep, high risk populations, considerations for surveillance and prevention, as well as pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options for treatment.

Abstract The goals of our study were to: 1) describe the incidence of disturbances in sleep quality, sleep hygiene, sleep-related cognitions and nightmares; and 2) investigate the association between these sleep-related disturbances and suicidal ideation (SI), in adolescents admitted to a psychiatric inpatient unit. Our sample consisted of 50 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 years (32 females and 18 males; 41 Caucasian and nine African American). Our cross-sectional design involved the administration of the Adolescent Sleep Wake Scale (ASWS), the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS), the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep-Short version for use with children (DBAS-C10), the Disturbing Dreams and Nightmare Scale (DDNSI), and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire Jr (SIQ-JR). Analyses were conducted using Pearson correlations, as well as univariate and multivariate regression. Results indicated that our sample experienced sleep disturbances and SI to a greater degree than non-clinical samples. Sleep quality was correlated with nightmares, while sleep quality and nightmares were each correlated with SI. Sleep quality, dysfunctional beliefs, and nightmares each independently predicted SI. Our study was the first to use the four sleep measures with an adolescent psychiatric inpatient sample. It is important to develop sleep-related assessment tools in high-risk populations given the link between sleep disturbances and suicidality. Furthermore, a better understanding of the relationships between SI and sleep quality, sleep-related cognitions, and nightmares is needed to develop potential prevention and treatment options for suicidality in adolescents.

The purpose of this review is to discuss sleep disturbances in hospitalized patients with a focus on causes of sleep disturbance, the effect of poor-quality sleep, high risk populations, considerations for surveillance and prevention, and pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options for treatment.

Of the extant primates, only 20 non-human species have been studied by sleep scientists. Notable sampling gaps exist, including large-bodied hominoids such as gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), orang-utans (Pongo spp.) and bonobos (Pan paniscus), for which data have been characterized as high priority. Here, we report the sleep architecture of three female and two male orang-utans housed at the Indianapolis Zoo. Sleep states were identified by scoring correlated behavioural signatures (e.g., respiration, gross body movement, muscle atonia, random eye movement, etc.). The captive orang-utans were focal subjects for a total of 70 nights (1013 h) recorded. We found that orang-utans slept an average of 9.11 h (range 5.85–11.2 h) nightly and were characterized by an average NREM of 8.03 h (range 5.47–10.2 h) and REM of 1.11 (range: 0.38–2.2 h) per night. In addition, using a sleeping platform complexity index (SPCI) we found that individuals that manufactured and slept in more complex beds were characterized by higher quality sleep. Sleep fragmentation (the number of brief awakenings greater than 2 min per hour), arousability (number of motor activity bouts per hour), and total time awake per night were reduced by greater quality sleep environments. Therefore, comfortable sleeping environments reduced arousability and improve sleep quality in captive orang-utans. These results support Fruth & Hohmann’s (1996) hypothesis, which purported that the tree-limb-to-sleeping platform transition in Miocene apes improved sleep quality.
