Stroke has a negative impact on families who provide care for post-stroke patients, the effect of which is due to functional deficits experienced by post-stroke sufferers which result in dependence on families for daily activities. The research objective was to explore in depth the experiences of families caring for post-stroke sufferers in Jambi city in 2019. This study used a qualitative method with a descriptive phenomenology approach. Participants in this study amounted to nine people who were selected using purposive sampling. Data is collected by semi-structured interview in duration of 60-90 minutes. Data analysis using the colaizzi method. The results found four themes, namely: dependence on daily activities on the family, family efforts to fulfill self-care activities, constraints faced by caregivers and family expectations. Conclusion: Families experience limited knowledge and skills, difficulties in meeting patients' ADLs, changes in physical conditions, changes in rest and sleep, changes in psychological conditions, changes in social activities, and economic changes. Therefore families need to get education from doctors, nurses and stroke team members starting from the time the patient is admitted to the hospital and re-evaluated when the patient is going home, about the knowledge and skills to treat post-stroke patients at home.

Background: Caregivers play a central role in post-stroke patients care. However, the role of and problems managed by caregivers have not been widely studied, particularly in Indonesia. This study aims to explore the roles and problems of caregivers in post- stroke patients’ care. Method: This was a qualitative study. Caregivers of post-stroke patients from the homecare clinic of Dr Sardjito General Hospital were purposely selected during January 2017 to June 2018. Focus group discussions were conducted to explore the roles and problems of caregiving. Results: Themes related to caregivers’ roles were: connecting patients with medical personnel and other family members, maintaining patients’ health conditions by fulfilling basic needs and assisting rehabilitation, as well as maintaining patients’ psychological conditions by encouraging conversation, telling jokes, or recreation. On the other hand, themes related to caregivers’ problems were: lack of knowledge caused by education inadequacy, underappreciated and unconcerned family, suboptimal service including limited physiotherapy and pharmacy resource, unthorough administration, lack of communication, physical limitations, and burnout, as well as uncooperative patients. Conclusions: Caregivers play essential roles as communicators and help to maintain patient's health conditions. Common problems are related to a lack of knowledge about strokes and a lack of attention from family. Understanding the roles and problems of caregivers may help facilitate better management and increase the quality of life for both patients and their caregivers.

Stroke is a condition of neurological changes caused by disruption in blood circulation to parts of the brain that experience hemiparese if the handling is not right can cause complications functional disorders, mobilization disorders, disruption of daily activities and disabilities that can not be cured. The purpose of this activity is an evaluation of the knowledge and skills to do post-stroke range of motion exercises conducted on January 29-30, 2020 using the lecture, question and answer method and simulation of post-stroke range of motion patients. The results showed that there was a significant effect after being given a Range of Motion with a value of sig <0.05. Conclusions Most post-stroke sufferers are able to carry out Range of Motion exercises. Suggestions are needed for the support or involvement of family members so that the implementation of the Range of Motion can be carried out continuously in patients after stroke

Abstract Mood disorders (e.g. depression, apathy, and anxiety) are often observed in stroke patients, exhibiting a negative impact on functional recovery associated with various physical disorders and cognitive dysfunction. Consequently, post-stroke symptoms are complex and difficult to understand. In this study, we aimed to clarify the cross-sectional relationship between mood disorders and motor/cognitive functions in stroke patients. An artificial neural network architecture was devised to predict three types of mood disorders from 36 evaluation indices obtained from functional, physical, and cognitive tests on 274 patients. The relationship between mood disorders and motor/cognitive functions were comprehensively analysed by performing input dimensionality reduction for the neural network. The receiver operating characteristic curve from the prediction exhibited a moderate to high area under the curve above 0.85. Moreover, the input dimensionality reduction retrieved the evaluation indices that are more strongly related to mood disorders. The analysis results suggest a stress threshold hypothesis, in which stroke-induced lesions promote stress vulnerability and may trigger mood disorders.

Dysphagia can occur in geriatric patients and is found in post-stroke patients. Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that can cause dehydration and disruption of daily activities. PSD is thought to be due to damage to the cortex and subcortical structures. After hospitalization, patients are expected to perform daily activities independently. The rehabilitative therapy that can be performed for post-stroke dysphagia patients is the Mendelsohn maneuver. The patient is asked to swallow food as usual, and when the food reaches the laryng, hold it up for 2-3 seconds with the throat muscles before finishing swallowing. Several studies have shown that there is an increased function in swallowing and a reduction in the incidence of aspiration.

The quality of life (QOL) of post-stroke patients can be assessed from the reports of patients themselves obtained through a structured interview or a questionnaire. However, some individuals are unable to comprehensively describe their QOL because of language disorders, cognitive effects caused by stroke, or pre-existing conditions. This study aims to identify differences in post-stroke QOL perception between patients and caregivers. A cross-sectional design involving 115 stroke patients and 115 caregivers was adopted, and Mann–Whitney test was used for statistical analysis. Results showed no significant difference in QOL perception (p = 0.166; α < 0.05), particularly in the physical (p = 0.278; α < 0.05), psychological (p = 0.068; α < 0.05), social relationship (p = 0.976; α < 0.05), and environmental (p = 0.157; α < 0.05) domains between patients and caregivers. Therefore, information from caregivers can be used to assess QOL when patients are incapable of reporting their condition.
