Abstract This paper considers the alleged pragmatism of Berkeley’s philosophy using the two Sellarsian categories of ‘manifest’ and ‘scientific’ images of the world and human beings. The ‘manifest’ image is regarded as a refinement of the ordinary way of conceiving things, and the scientific image is seen as a theoretical picture of the world provided by science. The paper argues that the so-called Berkeleian pragmatism was an effect of Berkeley’s work towards a synthesis of ‘manifest’ and ‘scientific’ images through the creation of one unified synoptic vision of the world and was a part of a new conceptual framework within which these two images could be combined.

Abstract This article is a response to Peter Martens, “Origen’s Doctrine of Pre-Existence and the Opening Chapters of Genesis,” ZAC 16 (2012): 516–549, in which he argues that Origen imagines the primitive state of human beings to be strictly incorporeal. Following the structure of Marten’s argument, it will be argued (a) that while Origen rejects anthropomorphic elements in the narrative of the creation of Eden, he does not deny its existence as a place in the world; (b) that Origen sometimes means by the fall of “rational beings” the fall of angels rather than human beings; (c) that the doctrine that “the end is like the beginning” ought to entail that humans had bodies in the beginning, as they will at the end; (d) that passages said by Martens to speak of a church that antedates the world are open to a different interpretation; and (e) that Origen does not say unequivocally that “coats of skin” at Genesis 3:21 represent bodies.

Reviewing revelation does not mean ignoring the study in the perspective of science, because in the revelation itself is found so many verses that encourage human beings to conduct thinking activities in reviewing everything especially the universe for the creation of a civilized life. We need a handle on life, that is religion or belief that recognizes the existence of an all-powerful substance, whereas in daily life a person is required to maintain, improve, and improve the quality of faith and piety in the creator, to achieve that there are all several ways one of which is through the world of Sufism or commonly known as the mystical world. For attainment in the mystical world it can be done by way of meditation or spiritual practice. The pinnacle of the mystical world is mahaabah or divine love where these are the highest levels of attainment towards God. In this paper the author examine the theory of divine love (mahabbah) from the Sufi women who first expressed her love to God, namely Rabi'ah Adawiyah. This paper uses the type of library research, while the approach used is historical, philosophical. Data collection is done by the documentation method and analyzed by descriptive analysis method. According to Rabi'ah love is love that has no strings attached to it and does not expect a reward in the form of either reward or liberation of the law, but what is sought is only doing God's will and perfecting it.
