The antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects of various endemic and non-endemic Eryngium species from Turkey were investigated. Nine endemic and two non-endemic Eryngium species were analyzed using a microdilution assay for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Cytotoxic activities of E. pseudothoriifolium, E. thorifolium, E. davisii, and E. falcatum, on prostate carcinoma and endometrial cancer cells were analyzed by cytotoxic activity assay. It was observed that 16 out of 22 extracts (aerial or root part) showed antibacterial activities. Fifteen out of 22 extracts showed antifungal activity with the lowest MIC (156 mg/l) value against Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and C. tropicalis ATCC 750. Aerial parts of E. pseudothoriifolium, E. thorifolium, E. davisii, and E. falcatum exhibited cytotoxic effects on endometrial cancer cells. This evaluation of tested endemic Eryngium species’ antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities is the first of its kind.

The present study was designed to synthesize  and develop new useful lead compounds (some novel benzazole and benzazine derivatives ) of simple structure , exhibiting optimal in vitro anticancer  and antimicrobial potency. Phenylenediamine derivative 1 was condensed  with  dithiocarboxylic acid derivatives 2 and produced   benzimidazole derivative 4. The benzotriazepines 8 and 10  were formed by the reaction of 1 with dicarbonyl derivatives followed by intermolecular coupling reaction. The synthesis of benzotriazine12, benzotriazole 14,17, benzimidazole16 and benzothiadiazine 19 from compound 1 was also described. The Synthesized Compounds were characterized by Spectral Studies like IR, H1 – NMR and Analysis Spectra .The title compounds were screened for their possible In vitro anticancer and antimicrobial activities. Among the synthesized compounds, some have shown promisingly remarkable activities against  different  cancer cell lines (MCF-7 human breast cancer cells, HepG2 human hepatocarcinoma cells and PC3 human prostate cancer cells)and moderate  to high antibacterial and antifungal activities. The obtained results showed that the most active compounds could be useful as a template for future design, modification and investigation to produce more active analogs.

The chemical composition of the essential oil from aerial parts of Mentha pulegium L. (Linné) collected in Sicily was evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main components were pulegone (50.6%), piperitenone (27.8%) and menthone (6.9%). Comparison of this oil with other studied oils of different populations is discussed. The oil showed good antibacterial and antifungal activities against some microorganisms that infest historical art works.

The present paper reports the chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of several essential oils and their components. Analysis showed that three oils (Carum carvi L., Verbena officinalis L. and Majorana hortensis L.) contained predominantly oxygenated monoterpenes, while others studied (Pimpinella anisum L., Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) mainly contained anethole. C. carvi, V. officinalis and M. hortensis oils exhibited the most potent antioxidant activity, due their contents of carvacrol, anethole and estragol. Antibacterial action was assessed against a range of pathogenic and useful bacteria and fungi of agro-food interest. V. officinalis and C. carvi oils proved the most effective, in particular against Bacillus cereus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Carvacrol proved most active against Escherichia coli, and completely inhibited the growth of Penicillium citrinum. The oils proved inactive towards some Lactobacilli strains, whereas single components showed an appreciable activity. These results may be important for use of the essential oils as natural preservatives for food products.

In the present study, some novel ferrocene derivatives carrying urea, thiourea, and sulfonamide groups were synthesized, and all compounds were characterized by spectral and elemental analyses. These compounds were screened for their antibacterial activities and also their minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureusandBacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniaandEscherichia coli) and antifungal activities againstSaccharomyces cerevisiaeandCandida albicans. Amongst the tested compounds,4b,4c,5b, and6bdisplayed excellent antimicrobial activity.

A series of substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives (3a–f) and (6a–f) have been synthesized from diphenylacetic acid hydrazide under microwave irradiation in various reaction conditions. The structures of the synthesized compounds were assigned on the basis of elemental analysis, IR, and 1H NMR. These targeted compounds have been tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activities compared to ampicillin and griseofulvin as standard drug. Compounds 3a, 3e, 3f, 6c, 6d, 6e, and 6d exhibited the maximum antibacterial activities while 3b, 3c, 3d, 3e, 6a, 6d, and 6e exhibited the maximum antifungal activities.

Strategy to synthesize novel carbazole, that is, 2,3-dihydro-2-phenyl-6H-pyridazino[4, 5-b]carbazole-1,4-dione (2), is developed as key reaction. This novel compound showed ideal reactivity toward different functional groups like methyl, carboxylic, nitro, piperazine, and amine; thus series of its derivatives are synthesized sequentially with the aim to fuel up the carbazole compounds with new versatile derivatives. All compounds were investigated for their activity against bacteria (MRSA andS. typhi) and fungi (Candida albicans). Among tested compounds3,6, and8exhibited pronounced antibacterial activities while2,5, and9also showed moderate activities.2,3,5,7, and9showed stronger antifungal activity againstCandida albicanscomparable to positive control.

Bioactive compounds of gonad, respiration tree, cuvierian organ, and body wall of the sea cucumberHolothuria leucospilotacollected from the north coast of the Persian Gulf were extracted using ethyl acetate, methanol and water–methanol solvents. Extracts were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities againstAspergillus niger,Candida albicans,Staphylococcus aureus,Pseudomonas aeruginosaandEscherichia coli. The activity was determined using the disc diffusion test. Cytotoxic activities of the extracts were determined by brine shrimp lethality assay. Results demonstrated that theA. nigerwas shown to be the most sensitive microorganism followed byC. albicans. The inhibition zone againstA. nigerandC. albicanshad minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 3 to 7 μg/ml. The highest antifungal activity was found in G (water–methanol) with an inhibition zone of 50 mm againstA. nigerat 18 μg/ml extract concentration continuing with CT (methanol) with 46 mm inhibition zone againstA. nigerat 18 μg/ml extract concentration. The highest cytotoxic effect of methanol extract was found with LC50values of about 40.31 μg/ml in the gonad organ fromH. leucospilotacontinuing with the respiration tree organ with LC50values of about 72.49 μg/ml.

Caralluma europaea (Guss.) N.E.Br.: (C. europaea) is a wild medicinal plant belonging to the family Apocynaceae. It is commonly used in traditional medicines for treating several diseases. The present work aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal potentials of C. europaea fractions including hydro ethanol (ET CE), n-butanol (But CE), and polyphenol (Poly CE). The chemical composition of hydroethanol, n-butanol, and polyphenol-rich fractions from C. europaea were determined using GC-MS after silylation. The anti-inflammatory effect of hydroethanol, n-butanol, and polyphenol-rich fractions was studied by carrageenan-induced paw edema. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of hydroethanol, n-butanol, and polyphenol-rich fractions against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and yeasts were assessed using the disc diffusion and micro-dilution assays. The findings of the chemical characterization affirmed the presence of interesting bioactive compounds in C. europaea fractions. The polyphenol-rich fraction was the best inhibitor of edema by75.68% after 6 h of treatment. The hydroethanol fraction was the most active against both bacteria and yeasts. This study contributes to society as it provides potential bioactive compounds in C. europaea extract, which may help in fighting nosocomial antibiotic-resistant microbes.

Medicaments, plants and plant-based are the basis of many of the modern pharmaceuticals we use today for our various purposes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant, phytochemical and antibacterial and antifungal activities of the Achyranthes aspera plant extract in different organic solvents. The radical scavenging activity of the different extracts of root, stem, leaf, and seed were evaluated by DPPH assay and the antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and antifungal activity against Fusarium sp. and Aspergillus niger was studied by Agar well cut diffusion method. All of the extracts exhibited different antioxidant and antibacterial activities and the activities varied from solvent to solvent, and the activities are concentrated. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were compared with the positive control Ascorbic acid and Cefuroxime. A qualitative phytochemical analysis was carried out and found to possess bioactive compounds like alkaloids, glycosides, terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, tannins.

The petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-hexane and aqueous successive extracts from the stems of Actinidia macrosperma C. F. Liang have been screened for antibacterial and antifungal activities in vitro using the disc diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC)/minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC). General toxicity of these extracts has also been assessed by brine shrimp lethality assay. The chloroform extract exhibited the most significant antimicrobial (MIC in the range of 60–500μg/ml, MBC in the range of 150–1000μg/ml, MFC in the range of 170–600μg/ml) and cytotoxic activities (LC50=16.82μg/ml at 24 hours).
