The present study has been undertaken to investigate plasma creatinine, folate and vitamin B12 as underlying factors in the reduction of plasma homocysteine concentration in different trimesters of pregnancy. Under a cross-sectional design, 30 healthy nonpregnant as well as 130 pregnant women, at 3 different trimesters of pregnancy (43 in 1st trimester, 44 in 2nd trimester and 43 in 3rd trimester) were sampled for plasma levels of folate, vitamin B12, homocysteine and creatinine. Plasma homocysteine and creatinine level were significantly (p<0.014) lower in pregnant women at different trimester (1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester) compared to nonpregnant women. Plasma folate was significantly higher in different groups of pregnant women compared to nonpregnant women. Significant negative correlation was found between plasma homocysteine and folate in nonpregnant (r=-0.453, p<0.012) and pregnant women at 2nd trimester (r=-0.681, p<0.001). There was found significant negative correlation between plasma homocysteine and vitamin B12 at 1st trimester group (r=-0.322, p<0.035) and 2nd trimester group (r=-0.394, p<0.008) but not in 3rd trimester. In present study, reduction of plasma total homocysteine appears to be a physiological response in pregnancy, and the level of plasma folate and vitamin B12, but can not be explained by renal homodynamic changes. BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is associated with great psychological, emotional and physical stress. In addition to undergoing hormonal changes, pregnant women experience a change in their attitude toward life and learn to re-assess their skills and lifestyle. Lifestyle, in general, and Islamic lifestyle, in particular, is concerned with the different psychological, social and physical aspects of the individual’s life.AIM: This study was conducted to evaluate the correlation between Islamic lifestyle and pregnancy-specific stress in pregnant women.MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted on 300 pregnant women presenting to prenatal care clinics. Data were collected using a demographic, the Islamic lifestyle and the pregnancy-related stress questionnaires.RESULTS: The results showed a statistically significant negative correlation (r = -0.284) between Islamic lifestyle and pregnancy-specific stress (P < 0.01). The stepwise regression showed that the mean score obtained in the pregnancy-related stress questionnaire decreased by 0.75 per year of marriage and by 0.14 per point in the Islamic lifestyle questionnaire.CONCLUSION: There was a significant negative correlation between Islamic lifestyle and pregnancy-specific stress. Training mothers, raising their awareness and encouraging them to adopt an Islamic lifestyle may play a significant role in controlling pregnancy-specific stress.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is prevalent not only among the overweight and obese but also normal weight individuals, and the phenotype is referred to as a metabolically unhealthy phenotype (MUHP). Besides normal weight individuals, overweight/obese individuals are also protected from MetS, and the phenotype is known as a metabolically healthy phenotype (MHP). Epidemiological studies indicate that coffee and micronutrients such as plasma folate or vitamin B12 (vit. B12) are inversely associated with MetS. However, correlations among coffee consumption metabolic phenotypes, plasma folate, and vit. B12 remain unknown. Our objective was to investigate the correlation between coffee consumption, metabolic phenotypes, plasma folate, and vit. B12 as well as to understand associations between plasma folate, vit. B12, and metabolic phenotypes. Associations among coffee consumption metabolic phenotypes, plasma folate, and vit. B12 were assessed in a cross-sectional study of 2201 participants, 18 years or older, from 2003–2004 and 2005–2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). MUHP was classified as having > three metabolic abnormalities. Coffee consumption was not associated with metabolic phenotypes, but negatively correlated with several metabolic variables, including BMI (p < 0.001). Plasma folate was positively associated with MUHP (p < 0.004), while vit. B12 was inversely associated with MUHP (p < 0.035). Our results suggest the potential protective impact of coffee on individual components of MetS and indicate a positive correlation between coffee consumption and MUHP among overweight individuals. Identifying possible dietary factors may provide practical and low-cost dietary intervention targets, specifically for early intervention. Larger and randomized intervention studies and prospective longitudinal studies are required to further evaluate these associations.

Background Prenatal supplementation has been introduced to pregnant women during early pregnancy to prevent complication to both mother and fetus. The complications include anaemia, postpartum haemorrhage, low birth weight and fetal defects. Aim To assess compliance with vitamin and mineral supplementation in pregnant women. Methods A cross-sectional design with simple random sampling was used in this study with 100 respondents who attended the maternal and child clinic in Selangor, Malaysia. Findings The findings showed that 86 respondents (86%) were compliance towards vitamin and mineral supplementation, whereas 35 respondents (35%) were non-compliance mainly due to forgetfulness. The result indicated a significant association between compliance with race (p=0.02), occupation (p<0.01), household income (p=0.02), education (p<0.01), parity (p<0.01) and trimester (p=0.02). Conclusion Majority of the respondents acknowledge that side effects and forgetfulness were the main influencing factors towards non-compliance.

Introduction. Chronic energy deficieny (CED) is a condition of a body characterized by low body weight and low energy stores, possibly limited physical capacity due to deprivation of food over a long period time. Ministry of Health ( Kemenkes) showed that in 2015, 305 out of 100.000 death of pregnant women is realated to malnutriotion and CED. Objective. The aim of this study is to determine the overview of pregnant women nutritional status based on mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) in Sundari Medan General Hospital. Method. The study was an observational descriptive study with a cross sectional design. The samples of this study consists of pregnant women from Sundari Medan Genaral Hospital, who had fulilled the inclusion and esclusion criteria by total sampling. Results.. Among 60 samples, the prevalance of Non-CED woman (85%) was found higher than the mild malnutrition (15%). Conclusion. Prevalance of CED pregnant women was found higher in risky age, middle educated and high income family.

Abstract: Creatinine is the end result of the metabolism of muscle creatine phosphate which was synthesized in the kidney. Serum creatinine level can normally decrease during pregnancy due to hyperfiltation of the renal glomeruli. Estimation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) with CKD-EPI formula is beneficially used in populations with GFR >60 ml/min/1.73m2 especially in pregnant women. The creatinine levels of normal pregnant women are lower than of non-pregnant women and pregnant women with pre-eclampsia. This study was aimed to obtain the serum creatinine level and estimated GFR (eGFR) in normal pregnant women. This was a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional design. Samples were obtained by using non-probability sampling of purposive sampling method. Blood samples of 30 normal pregnant women were obtained at three Public Health Centers (Minanga, Sario, and Bahu Manado) from October to November 2017. The laboratory examinations revealed that all samples (100%) showed decreased serum creatinine levels with a mean of 0.53 mg/dL and increased eGRF >90 ml/min/1.73m2. Conclusion: During pregnancy, there was an increase in eGFR and a decrease in serum creatinine level in all trimesters.

Abstract: Hemoglobin (Hb) is a parameter used to determine anemia prevalence. The average level of normal Hb at the end of pregnancy is around 12.5 g/dL, meanwhile, aproximately 5% of pregnant women have Hb level less than 11.0 g/dL. To date, Hb level below 11.0 g/dL especially at the end of pregnancy should be considered as an abnormal phenomenon and is usually caused by iron deficiency and not by hypervolemia which is commonly found in pregnancy. This study was aimed to determine the hemoglobin level of third semester pregnant women in Robert Wolter Mongisidi Hospital Manado. This was a descriptive study with a cross sectional design. Subjects were 39 third semester pregnant women who visited the Obstetric Department of Robert Wolter Mongisidi Hospital and fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The results showed that 25 subjects (64.1%) had low hemoglobin levels and 14 subjects (35.9%) had normal level of hemoglobin. In conclusion, most third semester pregnant women had low hemoglobin levels.
