The extracts of Zatoria multiflora Boiss were evaluated for prospective antibacterial activity against gram negative and gram positive bacteria. Cefoperazone is used as antibacterial reference drug. The activity of ethanol and methanol extract varied from organism to organism. The inhibitory effect of both the extracts and their 50/50 combination was more pronounced against gram positive bacteria. The MIC and MBC values were in the range of 1.718-6.25 and 2.832-6.25 mg/ml respectively. Significant (p=0.05) synergistic effect of combination of EtOH and MeOH extracts was recorded against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 while additive effect against rest of the bacterial strains. The present studies provide evidences for presence of antibacterial elements in alcoholic extracts and recommends for more exploration for it use against bacterial diseases. Researchers are continuing to discover all the properties of propolis due to its complex composition and associated broad spectrum of activities. This review aims to characterize the latest scientific reports in the field of antibacterial activity of this substance. The results of studies on the influence of propolis on more than 600 bacterial strains were analyzed. The greater activity of propolis against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative was confirmed. Moreover, the antimicrobial activity of propolis from different regions of the world was compared. As a result, high activity of propolis from the Middle East was found in relation to both, Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) strains. Simultaneously, the lowest activity was demonstrated for propolis samples from Germany, Ireland and Korea.

Abstract Background 8-Hydroxyquinoline derivatives are known for their extensive applications in the field of analytical chemistry and separation techniques; their complexes with transition metals also exhibit antibacterial and antifungal activity. Results In the present study, we synthesized a new series of pyranoquinoline derivatives and evaluated their antibacterial activities. The structures of the synthesized compounds were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), hydrogen-1 nuclear magnetic resonance, carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, and elemental analysis. All the prepared compounds were evaluated in vitro as antimicrobial agents against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains (Escherichia coli (ATCC35218), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC29213), Vibrio parahaemolyticus (ATCC17802), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC27853)). The screening test was determined by using the standard protocol of disc diffusion method (DDM). Conclusion We have synthesized new pyranic compounds bearing an 8-hydroxyquinoline moiety on their structure. The preliminary screening results showed that all the tested compounds have a remarkable inhibitory effect on the growth of the majority of the tested bacterial strains compared to the standard antibiotic (penicillin G), and the chlorinated compound (Q1) is more active against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative bacteria such as the Staphylococcus aureus strain which is the most sensitive. Gram-positive bacteria are responsible for a wide range of infectious diseases, and rising resistance in this group is causing increasing concern. Thus, this study develops novel heterocyclic compound derivatives of 8-hydroxyquinoline that have demonstrated good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. Graphical abstract

In the food industry, phosphates, polyphosphates and their salts are used, for example, as emul­si­fying agents in the production of processed cheese. The inhibitory effects of three commercially avai­la­ble phosphates and polyphosphates differing in their chain length (690, S9 and HBS) were tested on a set of 15 gram-positive or gram-negative CCM (Czech Collection of Microorganisms) strains and on 12 bacterial strains isolated from processed cheeses. Five different concentrations of each phosphate were chosen (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5% w/v) in order to observe the inhibitory effects of the phosphate salts on the growth of the microorganisms tested. Sensitivity of the individual bacterial strains to phosphates was observed of a liquid cultivation medium which was supplemented with applied salts. Subsequently, the growth in cells was determined by measuring optical density at a wavelength of 600 nm. According to the results, 690 and S9 phosphates, containing mainly orthophosphates, diphosphates (pyrophosphates) and short-chain polyphosphates, do not have a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of the tested bacteria. Significant inhibitory effects were observed only in HBS salt (a mixture of long-chain polyphosphates), which showed antibacterial effects on all gram-positive bacteria tested (both the CCM strains and those isolated from processed cheeses). The antibacterial effect of phosphates on gram-positive microorganisms is growing with the increasing length of the polyphosphate chain. This study has not proved a significant effect of the phosphates tested on the growth of gram-negative bacteria used.

The research for antibacterial activities of lactic acid bacteria isolated from Moroccan table olives, revealed 15 bacterial strains having an inhibitory activity against pathogenic germs: Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria innocua and Staphylococcus aureus; as well as Gram-negative germs, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and others. From 127 samples of table olives, 143 bacterial strains with antibacterial effect were isolated by the double layer method, 15 strains were retained. All are Gram positive, catalase negative and non-sporulating. Cocci constitute 66.33% of the total effective. The remaining 33.33% are represented by bacilli/Ovoid. The lactic acid bacteria retained have a greater inhibitory effect against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Listeria monocytogenes CECT 4032 and Staphylococcus aureus MBLA were inhibited by all the lactic strains studied. The smallest inhibition zones were recorded for the two isolates LB15 and LB96 against E. coli 87739, with diameter less than 10 mm.

Wild berry is an excellent source of phytonutrients and/or bioactive compounds associated with significant therapeutic properties, so that they have been utilized in folk medicine and traditional nutrition throughout centuries. Multiple health-promoting effects, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-heart and coronary disease properties were attributed to such wild berries. It has also been proved that berries could feature antimicrobial effects that could be of a great importance for the prevention of food-feed poisoning and fighting back antibiotic resistance. In this study, we investigated the antimicrobial properties of lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), raspberry (Rubus idaeus) and blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) crude and ethanolic extracts prepared from fruits obtained from the spontaneous flora of Eastern Carpathian Mountains situated in Transylvania. The antimicrobial effect of crude and alcoholic extracts were assessed on four Gram-negative, five Gram-positive bacteria and one yeast species using the agar diffusion method. The studied bacteria can cause food or feed spoilage and foodborne diseases. Our results indicate the significant inhibitory effect of lingonberry extracts in the case of Gram-negative bacteria like Proteus vulgaris and Salmonella Hartford, while among Gram-positive bacteria the strongest inhibitory effect was observed for Bacillus species like B. cereus, B. subtilis, B. mojavensis and Micrococcus luteus. The raspberry and blackberry extracts featured milder inhibitory effects in the case of the studied bacteria species. Furthermore, we have studied the crude or ethanolic extract combinations associated antimicrobial effects synergistic/additive or antagonistic properties. Interestingly, the triple and double ethanolic extract mixes had stronger antimicrobial properties, whereas the crude extract mixes showed relatively reduced effects, if any. Our results indicate that the antimicrobial activity of studied fruit extracts obtained from wild berries can vary upon the applied extraction method and their combination formulae, so that all these considerations must be taken into account when such fruit extracts are considered for foodstuff development.

The study was conducted to evaluate the inhibitory activity of methanol extract of Gardenia jasminoides leaves compared with leaf crude extracts for some organic solvents namely Methanol, Ethanol, Petroleum ether, Asetone and Chloroform on growth of some pathogenic bacteria and yeast, which included four gram positive isolates Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenes and Bacillus cereus and gram negative isolates Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Proteus vulgaris and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and some yeasts Candida albicans and Saccharomyces boulardii, by using well diffusion method. The inhibitory activity of extracts in the tested bacterial strains and yeasts was varied according to the type of extracting solvents and are tested microorganisms. The methanol callus extract which grown on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media by using (Naphthalen acitic acid) NAA and (Benzyle adenine) BA as growth regulator highly effective as compared to the other extracts as for inhibition of three gram positive bacteria and three gram negative bacteria,which include Staphylococcus aureus and, Proteus vulgaris, followed by acetone and ethanolic extracts which include two gram positive bacteria and two gram negative bacteria. All extracts had highly effect in growth of Candida albicans while all crude extracts didn’t show any sensitivity against Saccharomyces boulardii, and when we’d done (High Performance Liquid Chromatography) HPLC test for detection of some active compound we found Quinic acid, Iridiods glycosides and Crocin which its rate in fresh callus was higher than fresh leaves.

The essential oil of the leaves of Espeletia nana Cuatrec, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC-MS, which allowed the identification of 24 components, which made up 99.9% of the oil. The most abundant compounds were α-pinene (38.1%), β-pinene (17.2%), myrcene (15.0%), spathulenol (4.2%), bicyclogermacrene (4.0%), α-zingiberene (4.0%), and γhimachalene (3.7%). Antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria using the agar disk diffusion method. Activity was observed only against Gram-positive bacteria. MIC values were determined for Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923(200 μg/mL) and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 (600 μg/mL).

A variety of organisms produce bioactive peptides that express inhibition activity against other organisms. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is considered the best example of a unicellular organism that is useful for studying peptide production. In this study, an antibacterial peptide was produced and isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Baker’s yeast) by an ultrafiltration process (two membranes with cut-offs of 2 and 10 kDa) and purified using the ÄKTA Pure 25 system. Antibacterial peptide activity was characterized and examined against four bacterial strains including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The optimum condition for yeast growth and antibacterial peptide production against both Escherichia. coli and Klebsiella aerogenes was 25–30 °C within a 48 h period. The isolated peptide had a molecular weight of 9770 Da, was thermostable at 50–90 °C for 30 min, and tolerated a pH range of 5–7 at 4 °C and 25 °C during the first 24 h, making this isolated antibacterial peptides suitable for use in sterilization and thermal processes, which are very important aspect in food production. The isolated antibacterial peptide caused a rapid and steady decline in the number of viable cells from 2 to 2.3 log units of gram-negative strains and from 1.5 to 1.8 log units of gram-positive strains during 24 h of incubation. The isolated antibacterial peptide from Saccharomyces cerevisiae may present a potential biopreservative compound in the food industry exhibiting inhibition activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria.

The essential oils of the aerial parts and fruits of Chaerophyllum aureum L., collected from two mountains in Serbia, were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Sabinene (18.5-31.6%), p-cymene (7.9-25.4%) and limonene (1.9-10.9%) were characterized as the main constituents. The oils were tested against six bacterial strains and one strain of yeast, Candida albicans. The highest antimicrobial activity was observed against the Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and Micrococcus luteus, while of the Gram-negative strains, Escherichia coli was the most sensitive.

ABSTRACT The hygiene hypothesis postulates that the prevalence of allergy has increased due to decreased microbial stimulation early in life, leading to delayed maturation of the immune system. The aim of this study was to examine the cytokine pattern produced from cord blood mononuclear cells relative to adult cells after stimulation with bacterial strains from the normal flora. Mononuclear cells from cord and adult blood samples were stimulated with the following bacteria: Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus mitis, Corynebacterium minutissimum, Clostridium perfringens, Bacteroides vulgatus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Veillonella parvula, and Neisseria sicca. The levels of interleukin 12 (IL-12), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), IL-10, and IL-6 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The TNF-α production was also analyzed after blocking CD14, Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR-2), and TLR-4 prior to stimulation with bacteria. The levels of IL-12 and TNF-α were similar in cord and adult cells. Gram-positive bacteria induced considerably higher levels of IL-12 and TNF-α than gram-negative bacteria in both cord and adult cells. The levels of IL-6 were significantly higher in newborns than in adults, whereas the levels of IL-10 were similar in newborns and adults. Gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria induced similar levels of IL-6 and IL-10 in cord cells. L. plantarum bound or signaled through CD14, TLR-2, and TLR-4, whereas E. coli acted mainly through CD14 and TLR-4. These results indicate that the innate immune response in newborns to commensal bacteria is strong and also suggest that different bacterial strains may have differential effects on the maturation of the immune system of infants.
