Introduction: Lecture is an important method of instruction through which the undergraduate medical students acquire knowledge, experience, skill and attitude. There are however, serious questions regarding the effectiveness of the traditional lecture approach. Yet, it is agreed upon that this can be more effective by making this approach methodical and more interactive.Objectives: This study was conducted to assess medical teachers’ skills in instructional events in their lecture classes.Materials and Methods: A descriptive, crosssectional study was conducted from July 2013 to June 2014 at conveniently selected six medical colleges of the country. At those selected institutions 30 lecture classes were observed and views of 1500 students were collected. A checklist with rating scale having rubric was used by the researchers to record the necessary observations while attending the lectures covering 8 instructional events. Out of 30 lecture classes, 13 were of preclinical subjects and 17 were of paraclinical area. Views of 1500 students were collected on a self administered structured questionnaire just after attending observed classes, covering 11 areas of performance. Out of them 732 were preclinical students and 768 were paraclinical students.Results: In this study, majority of the respondents (67%) agreed that the teachers successfully gained attention. In mentioning objective, the observer marked more than half (53.3%) of the teachers as unsatisfactory. The mean score of observer’s opinion in mentioning objective was 0.97±1.35. More than one fourth (23.55%) of the student respondents did not agree that the teachers stimulated prior knowledge in the lecture class. More than one fourth (26.15%) of the respondents did not agree that necessary feedback were taken by the teachers. Forty two percent of the respondents did not agree that the teachers provided a good summary at the end. More than one fourth of the respondents (26.85%) did not agree that the lecture was interesting. In this study, some of the key performances of the teachers like mentioning objective of the lesson, providing summary, legibility of teaching aids were scored less than 2, indicating that those were the problem areas and should be emphasized more. In this regards, continued medical education/continued professional developmental program of medical colleges should be valued and exercised properly.Conclusion: Effectiveness of a lecture largely depends on the knowledge of the teachers in teaching methodologies, their individual skills in presentation and their ability in classroom management. Objectives: Different teaching aids are advocated in the medical colleges for delivery of lectures such as power point presentation, blackboard, transparency sheet, overhead projectors, extempore and lecture sheets .The aim of our study was to compare the more acceptable teaching methods between the students of Dhaka Medical College and Enam Medical College. Materials and Methods: Total one hundred students were selected from fourth year in each medical college. They were asked to fill in a fourteen item questionnaire about their perception of five lecture delivery methods. Questionnaire was properly explained. The results were analyzed separately to find out any differences between preferences of teaching methods in both medical colleges. Results: In DMC 50% students preferred traditional blackboard method ,25% PowerPoint presentations, 5% both blackboard and PowerPoint, 16% extempore and 4% lecture sheet .On the other hand, in EMC, 53% mentioned PowerPoint presentation as most acceptable, 38% blackboard, 5% combined blackboard and PowerPoint and 4% extempore. Some important comments were recorded which could be valuable for the medical teachers. Conclusion: The study showed that students of DMC clearly prefer traditional blackboard method rather than other teaching aids, whereas students of EMC prefer PowerPoint presentation. The study does not bring out any evidence based superiority of any lecture delivery method. It appears that any teaching aid can be appropriate and effective if the teachers are properly trained. This highlights the need for formal training in teaching technologies for good presentation and thus motivate the students. Introduction: Faculty development has become an essential part of any medical college for effective teaching-learning session. Centre for Medical Education (CME) has been organizing ‘teaching methodology’ workshop to train up the medical teachers in Bangladesh as a part of the faculty development programme. Objectives: To assess the students’ views regarding teaching performances of the teachers who had attended the workshop of CME. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in thirteen selected medical colleges of Bangladesh. Students’ opinions were collected by a structured questionnaire of 5-point Likert scale that included 13 separate positive statements regarding teaching performances. For each statement, the mean score was calculated and interpreted as, excellent ≥ 4, Good ≥ 3 to ≤ 4, satisfactory ≥ 2 to ≤ 3, unsatisfactory ≤ 2. But mean score ≤3 indicates deficit aspect of performances. Results: According to students’ aggregated views, teaching performances of 15% teachers were excellent, 51% were good, 25% were satisfactory and 9% were unsatisfactory. Conclusion: The trained teachers are not practising the expected standards in the tutorial classes in all aspects. Initiatives should be taken to pay more attention to deficit aspect of performances. Objective: The objective of our study was to explore student’s perception of the educational environment in their respective medical colleges Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at two medical colleges (one public sector and one private-sector medical college), both affiliated with Khyber Medical University, Peshawar from January 2020 to March 2020. DREEM was used to measure the educational environment of both public sector and private sector medical colleges. Results: The overall mean score with standard deviation was 113± 22 SD for private medical college and 109 ± 25 SD for public sector medical college, which means more positive than negative perception. Private sector college overall score was better than public sector college but with no significant difference. Private sector medical college score was better in all DREEM subscales except Students’ Academic Self-Perception in which public college scored 18± 5 and private college scored 16± 5. Conclusion: There is a significant margin for improvement for all domains of the educational environment in both public and private sector medical colleges, especially the low scores in the domain of Students’ Social Self Perceptions need attention.

Background: To find the characteristics of an effective medical teacher, as perceived by the under graduate medical students who are at different stages of the MBBS course.Methods: A cross sectional study was done among all the undergraduate medical students studying in a medical college and hospital in Puducherry. The undergraduate students were visited in batches and students were explained regarding objectives and those who consented for the study were administered with a validated and pretested questionnaire in line with the objective of the study. The results are expressed in the form of proportions and percentages and the chi-square-test was used to test the significance of difference observed between different batches of studentResults: The most important qualities perceived by the students for being an effective medical teacher are creating interest in the subject, having good communication skills, providing good resource material, inspiring and motivating students, being easily approachable, respecting students/ patients / other staff, being enthusiastic, energetic and good listener. There is a significant difference in the perceived importance among different batch of students in the domain of teaching skills of a medical teacherConclusions: This study identified qualities of medical teachers related to their teaching skills, usage of teaching learning methods, approach towards students and their personal qualities that are perceived to be more important by medical students.

Job satisfaction includes the fulfillment of both extrinsic and intrinsic satisfaction dimensions.. To find out the views of medical teachers regarding their job satisfaction this study was carried out in 10 medical colleges for one year among 218 teachers working in preclinical, paraclinical and clinical departments of those medical colleges. Structured questionnaire using 47 characters related to job satisfaction were compiled under 8 themes. Among these for 39 questions 5 point Likert scale was used as rating scale .For satisfaction or dissatisfaction 3 was taken as the cut off value. Mean age of the respondents were 42 years and they passed 3 years after last promotion, 41% teachers were female , 87% were married and 81 % had post graduate degrees. Among the 8 themes teachers were highly satisfied with all of the 4 items under theme 1( relation with others). Teachers were also satisfied with theme 2 (teaching related responsibilities )& theme 3 ( teaching environment) though level of satisfaction was not very high. Teachers were not satisfied with activities related to current work ie, theme 4 but highly dissatisfied with the facilities available other than the salary ( theme5). Regarding local administration medical teachers were highly dissatisfied (theme 6) but there was low level satisfaction with central administration (theme7). Regarding clinical teachers satisfaction all teachers were highly satisfied with all the items (theme 8). Satisfaction with one or other aspect of their job was 58.6% which was not very high. Low salary , adverse environment, political interference in posting promotion was the most important cause for dissatisfaction. AbstractPrevious case reports in this series on Education and Training have looked at specialist courses for postgraduate students seeking an in-depth know ledge of informatics and a career in the field. By contrast, this review describes a project designed to pilot a series of learning opportunities for undergraduate medical students. Although some UK medical colleges have opted to introduce informatics into the curriculum as a discipline in its own right, the Informatics Department at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College chose a different approach. When a new curriculum was introduced at St Bartholomew’s and at The London Hospital Medical College, the Head of the Informatics Department saw this as an ideal opportunity to explore ways of integrating informatics into the curriculum. The initiatives described in this paper were made possible as a result of an award from the UK government Department of Employment. Money from an Enterprise in Higher Education grant funded a range of programmes, one of which was designed to introduce students to selected aspects of informatics and to demonstrate what is feasible in the undergraduate curriculum. The work carried out over a period of three and a half years was intended to provide the basis for the next phase of curriculum development. However, in the wake of the restructuring which has taken place in London medical colleges, the Informatics Department at what was St Bartholomew’s has relocated to University College London Medical School, and is now called The Centre for Health Informatics and Multi professional Education (CHIME). University College is designing a new medical curriculum and CHIME is drawing on the experience gained through the Enterprise Project to find the best way to integrate informatics into this curriculum.


Background: Information technology (IT) is a new way of teaching and learning. One of the promising media of information technology is e-Learning, which is used to enhance knowledge and skills among users. A student gains better and deep knowledge through a useful tool. This survey aimed to determine practices among medical students for e-Learning. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted on 184 students amongst the 500 students currently enrolled in medical college. Data was collected using questionnaires and were analyzed through SPSS version 22. Chi-square was used for qualitative values. Results: Majority 90.80% (n=167) students were aware of e-Learning and were statistically high in first year students (p-value: 0.018). The student did not show statistically significant results for content learned through e-Learning with a p-value of 0.063. Different resources were used for e-Learning in which videos had the highest percentage (87.60%) and audios were used as the least resource for e-Learning (29.20%). Daily, 56% of the students use e-Learning for 1 hour or less and only 3% of the students used it for more than 4 hours. Conclusion: Majority of undergraduate medical students were aware of the use of e-Learning and most of them preferred e-Learning for their course work and studies showing a significant increase in understanding and use, compared to studies conducted earlier. Participants found e-Learning useful and effective tool in increasing knowledge and understanding of their subject. Keywords: e-Learning; Practices; Students.

Recently, the relationship between emotional arousal and depression has been studied. Focusing on this relationship, we first developed an arousal level voice index (ALVI) to measure arousal levels using the Interactive Emotional Dyadic Motion Capture database. Then, we calculated ALVI from the voices of depressed patients from two hospitals (Ginza Taimei Clinic (H1) and National Defense Medical College hospital (H2)) and compared them with the severity of depression as measured by the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D). Depending on the HAM-D score, the datasets were classified into a no depression (HAM-D < 8) and a depression group (HAM-D ≥ 8) for each hospital. A comparison of the mean ALVI between the groups was performed using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test and a significant difference at the level of 10% (p = 0.094) at H1 and 1% (p = 0.0038) at H2 was determined. The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic was 0.66 when categorizing between the two groups for H1, and the AUC for H2 was 0.70. The relationship between arousal level and depression severity was indirectly suggested via the ALVI.
