Occupational stress has been attracting the attention of the researchers since very long now. Decline in performance and productivity as well as an undesirable shift in the work attitude of the employees are just few of its undesirable outcomes. Bureaucracy in India comprises of a fleet of government officials who are employed at both Central and State level. The purpose of the present study was to empirically investigate occupational stress in Indian Bureaucracy and to compare the same on the basis of length of service. Job satisfaction, Resilience and Emotional Intelligence of Indian bureaucrats were also analyzed and compared on the said basis. A sample of 120 civil servants was taken for this study. Four different psychometric scales were used to measure the four variables. Occupational stress levels, Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and Job Satisfaction were compared across three levels of administrative hierarchy, i.e. Short (less than 10 years of service), Medium (10 to 20 years of service), and Long (more than 20 years of service). Significant difference was found in stress levels across three levels of administrative hierarchy, wherein officers in Short service category exhibited the least amount of stress, while those in Long service category showed the highest amount of stress. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand in depth the various factors contributing to the occupational stress in Indian bureaucrats.

Purpose/Hypothesis: Students in graduate level DPT programs function at varying levels. Some students thrive and others struggle to maintain required minimum levels of academic performance. When considering admission of applicants, and when assisting enrolled students, consideration of factors contributing to academic success is of interest. Stress has been shown to be prevalent in a wide range of students and has many negative effects including poor life satisfaction, increased clinical burnout, and reduced academic performance. Research has shown a correlation between higher emotional intelligence (EI) and decreased stress levels in medical, nursing, and undergraduate students. The purpose of this study was to examine if emotional intelligence (EI) and/or extrovert bias correlates with perceived stress levels in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. It was hypothesized that students with higher emotional intelligence and more extroverted personalities would experience lower levels of perceived stress. Participants: After providing consent, a convenience sample of 60 first and second year DPT students (33 female) with age range 23 to 38 participated in the current study. Participation was voluntary and 60 of a possible 72 students chose to participate. Materials/Methods: After obtaining informed consent, participants completed Goldberg’s IPIP-Neo questionnaire (extraversion), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Assessing Emotions Scale (emotional intelligence). Each of these tools have demonstrated validity and reliability for the respective areas measured. Surveys were administered to students and results were analyzed for possible relationships between extraversion and stress levels as well as EI and stress levels using a Spearman Correlation test. Results: Spearman Correlation analyses were conducted with a significant negative correlation between EI and perceived stress rs = -0.291, p= 0.026 and a non-significant negative correlation between extraversion and perceived stress rs = -1.36, p= 0.305. Discussion: In the current sample, EI had a significant negative relationship with perceived stress levels, with higher EI scores correlating to lower levels of stress. The relationship between extraversion and perceived stress was non-significant. Clinical Relevance: Doctorate level graduate programs can be considered intense and very stressful. Admission of qualified students equipped to meet the demands of a DPT program has great importance. Establishing a correlation between EI, introversion/extraversion bias, and stress may help DPT programs further assess prospective students. Consideration of factors correlated with higher perceived stress may be useful when providing resources to admitted students to facilitate academic success.

Objective: The present study was done to assess if there is any association between Emotional intelligence (EI) & stress among medical students. Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, information was gathered through a self-administered, semi-structured questionnaire. It consisted of Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10 Questionnaire) & Schutte self-report EI test (SSEIT) to collect the information about stress levels and emotional intelligence respectively. Statistical test Chi-square was used and p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. SPSS Version 23 was used for data analysis. Result: A total of 60 participants were assessed for Stress and EI. 11 (18.33%) students were found to be under severe stress. Majority (n=39, 65 %) of the students had high EI. Gender, type of stay (hostellers/day scholars) and stress levels were not found to be statistically significant with EI. Conclusion: Non -significant association between stress levels and EI was found hence other factors leading to stress in medical students should be investigated and studied. Today emotional intelligence is increasingly relevant to the success of management as well as employees in every respect, be it internal issues like conflict resolution, group dynamics, leadership and motivation or the external issues like customer relationship management, brand loyalty and corporate social responsibility (CSR). There is limited research on the impact of emotional intelligence on job stress and workplace conduct. The objective of the article is to understand the relationship between occupational stress and emotional intelligence. It also attempts to study the impact of some demographic variables (gender, age, work experience) on occupational stress. Simple random sampling was used to collect data from teaching and non-teaching staff working in universities and educational institutions in Uttar Pradesh, India. SPSS 21 was used for data analysis using statistical tools like correlation, Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis tests. Results show a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and occupational stress. The female employees were found to have greater stress levels as compared to their male counterparts. Age is found to have an impact on occupational stress of university teachers. The employees in their forties were found to have higher stress levels than younger employees. Work experience is also found to have an impact on occupational stress of university teachers. It was observed that employees with a work experience of more than 30 years have maximum levels of occupational stress. Based on the findings of this study, the managers should take special measures to take care of female employees and minimize factors which lead to their stress. The policies and work culture of the organization should create a conducive ambience for female employees. The organization should provide support and counselling to employees in their forties to sort out their stress-related issues which would eventually enhance their productivity. The employees with a work experience of more than 30 years (usually older ones) should get support and any stress-causing issues such as post-retirement benefits should be explained and clarified. This study adds to the current body of knowledge from a theoretical perspective. It enriches the understanding of the relationship between emotional intelligence, demographic variables and occupational stress. The top management of the organization can enhance their organization’s effectiveness by learning from the findings of this study. PurposeIn a country like Saudi Arabia, where the construction industry is witnessing an impressive growth in the post-oil era, it is important to examine the occupational health and safety behaviors of construction workers (CWs).Design/methodology/approachThe present study aims to investigate the impact of emotional intelligence (EI) on workers' stress and safety behaviors. Data were collected from CWs (n = 265) at a major construction site in the city of Jeddah. Two questionnaires comprising 25 and 32 questions were used to measure their EI and stress levels, respectively. Furthermore, structured interviews were conducted with the managers and supervisors to inquire about the safety behavior of their respective workers. Descriptive statistics, simple and companion regression were used for data analysis.FindingsThe findings indicate that EI plays an important role to enhance the safety behaviors of the CWs besides reducing their workplace stresses. Furthermore, workers' stress levels are found to negatively impact their safety behaviors, indicating that any reduction in occupational stress can reciprocally enhance their safety compliance. The findings are further discussed with the concerned stakeholders to recommend a seven-point therapeutic role of EI for the safety of CWs.Originality/valueResults of the study can be used by managers and supervisors of the Saudi construction industry to reduce workplace accidents and improve the productivity of their organizations.

The present study investigated the relationship between people’s reasons for listening to music, trait emotional intelligence, and alexithymia whilst also controlling for the effect of participants’ gender, age, and perceived stress levels. In keeping with previous research, initial findings indicated that emotionally intelligent individuals were less likely to use music to relieve and alleviate negative moods, whilst those who had high scores on a measure of alexithymia were more likely to use music for the same reasons. However, when the effects of gender, age, and perceived stress were controlled for, these relationships were no longer significant and previously non-significant relationships between trait emotional intelligence and using music to manipulate arousal and to reminisce about the past were found to be significant. Together these findings suggest that emotional intelligence is related to the reasons why people listen to music but not in the way that previous research had suggested, and the apparent links between emotional intelligence and mood management might be better explained by the stress experienced by participants at the time of questioning.

Purpose Nationwide, upward trends exist in student issues with anxiety, stress, depression, and lowered classroom performance. As emotional awareness and emotional regulation skills are typically not addressed in professional discipline-specific courses, students experience challenges in their academic performance. This pilot research explored the effect of brief targeted classroom practices within an empowerment-based framework on domains of emotional intelligence. Method Twenty-two students in an undergraduate speech-language pathology class received a 13-week, biweekly, 15-min session of empowerment-based worksheet exercises to develop increased self-esteem, emotional awareness and regulation, and communication. Assessments of self-esteem, emotional intelligence, communication competence, and communication apprehension were conducted using validated scales, namely, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale ( Rosenberg, 1965 ), the Quick Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment ( Mohapel, 2015 ), the Self-Perceived Communication Competence Scale ( McCroskey & McCroskey, 2013 ), and the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension ( McCroskey, 1982 ), respectively. Midsemester and semester-end student reflections were collected. Results Paired t tests were significant in self-esteem and emotional quotient, including subdomains of emotional awareness, emotional management, social emotional awareness, and relational management. Significance was noted in communication competence in the subdomains of dyad interaction, stranger interaction, and acquaintance. Students' reflection showed significant improvement in empowerment and self-rated improvements in confidence, communication, connections with peers, and trust with instructor. Conclusion Preliminary evidence demonstrates positive outcomes with integration of intentional classroom exercises to build emotional intelligence (including emotional awareness and regulation), self-esteem, and communication. This empowerment model may assist faculty in developing effective pedagogical strategies to build students' self-resiliency.

Zusammenfassung. In der vorliegenden Studie wurden die Emotionale Intelligenz und das Führungsverhalten von Trainern erhoben. Insgesamt 215 Fußballtrainer bearbeiteten die deutsche Kurzversion des Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue-SF; Freudenthaler, Neubauer, Gabler, Scherl & Rindermann, 2008 ) und die Leadership Scale for Sports (LSS; Würth, Saborowski & Alfermann, 1999 ). Neben der inhaltlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der Emotionalen Intelligenz und dem Führungsverhalten von Trainern werden die eingesetzten Verfahren einer kritischen Prüfung unterzogen. Die Prüfung der Testgüte für die vorliegende Stichprobe zeigt akzeptable interne Konsistenzen für den TEIQue und für zwei Subskalen der LSS (Demokratisches Verhalten und Soziale Unterstützung) Trainer der verschiedenen Lizenzstufen unterscheiden sind in ihrer selbstberichteten Emotionalen Intelligenz nicht voneinander. Für die Gesamtstichprobe werden Zusammenhänge zwischen Emotionaler Intelligenz und allen Subskalen (soziale Unterstützung, fachliche Unterweisung, demokratisches Verhalten und positives Feedback) der LSS gefunden. Die Diskussion nimmt sich der Einschätzung der verwendeten Messverfahren an und hebt die Bedeutung von sportspezifischen Instrumenten hervor.
