Athletic identifi cation indicates the level of person’s identifi cation with a role of an athlete. Different levels of sports identifi cations are typical of all people: those who are sports professionals as well as those who only exercise. The students at the Lithuanian Academy of Physical Education (LAPE) are prepared to be sports coaches and teachers of physical education, and only some students choose the career of a professional athlete, so their identifi cation with sports activities at the academy and their athletic identifi cation might be rather different. The aim of the research was to reveal the manifestation of would-be physical education and sports specialists’ athletic identifi cation at the institution of higher education. The empirical research involved the triangulation of qualitative and quantitative methods. The questionnaire was used to determine the general tendencies of the research participants’ athletic identifi cation, and the interview was meant to establish its content and specifi c features. The research results have important implications for the personnel of the institutions of higher education attemp-ting to facilitate student personal growth through participation in sports activities. The links of students’ athletic identifi cation with the variables in the higher school environment shows the presence of a pervasive athletic culture (Ferris et al., 2004) which results in the educational experience at the Academy. Athletic culture is experienced by students — athletes during their years of competitive, educational, and social development. Students — athletes’ fi rst contact with university environment is mediated through institutions — friends, coaches, practice and competitions. In some cases these factors increase athletes’ satisfaction with collegiate experience and promote continued persistence toward a degree. Research results let us conclude that athletic identifi cation at the institution of higher education is determined by students’ activity in sports, their sports aspirations and plans, evaluations of sporting conditions at the higher school and perception of the importance of sports activities. Athletic culture at the institution of higher education is both the precondition and the outcome of students’ favorable athletic identifi cation. Research revealed the links between the manifestation of students’ athletic identifi cation and the following sociodemographic and other factors: gender, academic achievements and academic identifi cation, sports aspirations, living place, professional identifi cation, feelings and the evaluation of their higher school. Keywords: athletic identification, athletic culture, institution of higher education.

This paper studied problems in EFL students’ paragraph writing. The research participants were first-year students of English in Tay Do University (TDU). To achieve the desired aims of the current study, the researcher combined both qualitative and quantitative methods, using questionnaires, interviews, and observations as the main instruments. The researcher used the package of social sciences (SPSS) for analysis. Research results showed that the freshmen at TDU often encountered problems in writing paragraphs. These accounted for grammatical structures, vocabulary, and coherence. Basing on the research results, students could recognize their difficulties when writing and find some new ways to overcome them. It is suggested that teachers should find and update some new teaching methods so as to develop students’ paragraph writing skills.

Article visualizations:

This paper aims to analyse the proposals coming from the students in technical higher education, more specifically Politehnica University of Bucharest (UPB), regarding the improvement of sports facilities. It also aims to analyse their options for the activities performed in this sports complex. The activities carried out by the UPB students during physical education and sports classes are related to motor activity, types of motor learning, types of skills and motor skills, motor qualities, as well as their functional somatic and psychological characteristics. For students, these activities should be an important component of both individual health and training, given that they enable them to properly react in daily living. The UPB Department of Physical Education and Sports-Kinetotherapy provides competitive and mass activity for the following curricular subjects: football, volleyball, handball, basketball, athletics, aerobic gymnastics, table tennis, badminton, and chess. The development of sports and their transformation from exclusive sports into mass sports (swimming, skiing, tennis, etc.) have determined the UPB students to introduce these activities among their preferences regarding physical activity. Sports facilities for indoor or outdoor activities, equipment and installations must keep up with the new technical advancements and must be able to ensure the continuation of sports activities.

Open Educational Resources (OER) have been researched for a long time in the open education field. Researchers are now shifting their focus from resources to practices for delivering open education, an area called Open Educational Practices (OEP). However, there is little information in the related literature regarding the design of an OEP-based course or the impact of these types of courses. Therefore, this study designs a new OEP-based course at a public university for teaching family education during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also investigates its impact on learning motivation and teachers’ perceptions. In this context, a practical pilot experiment using both qualitative and quantitative methods was conducted. Specifically, 36 learners participated in this experiment. The obtained findings highlight: (1) an innovative design framework for OEP-based courses that teachers can refer to in their contexts; (2) that learners had a high motivation level in terms of knowledge achievements, individual connection and engagement when taking the OEP-based course; and (3) several advantages and challenges of the OEP-based course from the teacher’s and learners’ perspectives. For instance, the teacher reported the fear of losing control over the learning process when applying OEP. The findings of this paper can help researchers and educators in adopting OEP in higher education especially in times of crises, as well as increase the sustainability of OEP, hence contributing to open education development.

This paper reports the findings of an evaluation of supportive housing for people who have been hospitalized in psychiatric facilities. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to inquire into two key processes, social support and control in the residence, and two key outcomes, quality of life and personal growth. Interviews were conducted with 34 residents of small supportive housing programs, and staff of these settings also provided information. While residents were generally pleased with the amount of support and control they had in their residences, there were some areas in which staff exerted unilateral control (i.e., they made decisions without involving residents in the process). With respect to quality of life, residents were satisfied with their housing, but voiced some concerns over a lack of privacy, stigma, and limited opportunities for participation in the community. Residents reported showing personal growth since entering supportive housing in terms of greater independence, more instrumental role involvement, and improved self-esteem and social skills. Staff confirmed these changes. Residents indicated their increased feelings of competence were due to the social support of staff and friends, acceptance by members of their networks and the community at large, and participation in the residence and community activities. The findings expand our understanding of supportive housing in showing that such programs have beneficial effects besides reduced recidivism rates and increased work productivity for residents and in identifying program processes which contribute to residents' increased competence. Moreover, the findings illustrate the value of using qualitative data in program evaluation.

Abstract. Due to the widespread practice of traditional and popular games in the municipalities on the Portuguese Way close to the border with Galicia, the principal objective of this study is to analyze game and traditional practices in the municipalities on the last section of the Central Portuguese Way (from Porto to Valença do Minho), to study their application within the school environment, and to identify other practices of physical and sports activities carried out by the population in this setting. We opted for a qualitative methodology, using personal semi-structured interviews as a tool for obtaining data. The study sample was composed of 27 people: 9 sports technicians from Municipal Chambers, 9 teachers from first-cycle elementary schools (non-specialists in Physical Education) and 9 teachers from second-cycle elementary schools (Physical Education specialists). A low practice of traditional games was evidenced in these municipalities, Malha games being the most popular group of recreational practices. Results also stressed out that the practice of popular and traditional games in schools is scarce and sporadic. Portuguese abundancy of games should be taken into higher consideration by authorities, focusing on their promotion and revival in schools, ideal locations for this type of playful-social projects.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify whether or not females believe they associate with the culture of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by investigating the perceptions of female students currently enroled in STEM courses. Design/methodology/approach The paper presents data from a survey on female STEM students’ “Perspectives of women in STEM”, “Parents’ Science qualification”, “Supports in their STEM Course” and their “Science identify” through a social capital lens. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyse the data. Findings The main findings were that female STEM undergraduates believe social bias, balancing work and family life and lack of role models are the main cause of less women in STEM professions and leadership positions. There were statistically significant differences between how male and female students identified with certain traits, with less females claiming to be intelligent and know about latest discoveries than males. Research limitations/implications To eradicate stereotypical views of scientists, it is recommended that Irish higher-education institutions introduce initiatives to increase the socialisation of STEM females within female networks and develop female students’ self-awareness of their own capabilities. The expansion of STEM networks could act as a means to facilitate female students adopting positive science identities, increasing their science capital. Originality/value In Ireland, there is a paucity of literature relating to females’ experience of STEM in higher education. This paper provides evidence that despite their engagement with STEM, female undergraduate students subscribe to the stereotypical image of the scientist. This study highlights the need to change the culture experienced by female STEM undergraduates in Ireland so as to improve the experiences and trajectories of women in higher education.

This paper describes a unique service-learning based environmental and humanitarian program for youth, The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots program (R&S). R&S aims to foster learning, personal growth and civic engagement among youth members through service activities and environmental education. Despite its promise as a youth development program and its rapid expansion into 100 countries, little is known about R&S’s impact on youth development. In this study, we explore R&S programs in China and Tanzania, two countries that are maximally different from the U.S. in important cultural and contextual factors. Through qualitative and quantitative methods we describe the programs, their practices, and perceptions of their impact on youths’ personal and social development (cognitive and social competence, leadership, self-efficacy, citizenship and social responsibility). Additionally, we highlight the importance of sociocultural and ecological factors when developing and evaluating youth programs.

English is increasingly used as a lingua franca (ELF) for academic activities in Spanish higher education institutions. The notion of ELF is now being redefined including in its conceptualization a multilingual nature of communication (Jenkins, 2015). This conception is interesting for researchers in English-medium instruction (EMI). Therefore, this paper reports on a study which focuses on the multilingual resources most frequently used by higher education lecturers to achieve comprehensibility in EMI courses at the University of Zaragoza. It regards them as part of the pragmatic and strategic behaviour of the participants. The corpus for the study consists of 14 hours of audio-recorded lectures in two different disciplines that have been analysed from a discourse-pragmatic approach, involving both qualitative and quantitative methods. The analysis of the data reveals that lecturers use their multilingual resources, mainly their own first language, as a pragmatic strategy that enables them to achieve various conversational goals such as clarifying meaning.
