The article examines the features of the perception of the urban environment as a specific phe- nomenon. The article considers the artistic works of a group of contemporary Ukrainian artists P. Makov, A. Sai, L. Dzhuraev, A. Priduvalov in the genre of urban landscape from the point of view of a conceptual approach, which allows us to understand the general direction of development of this type of genre. The works of contemporary Ukrainian artists reflect how a modern city creates an endless combination of connections between different aspects of life and the corresponding various forms and impressions. The article analyzes the works that the authors demonstrated as their reflections on changes in the urban environment in special creative projects. The urban environment causes a creative person to strive to convey his atmosphere, images, rhythms in his own language. For centuries, artists have depicted the urban space, but it was in the twentieth century that the transformation of the urban environment into an urban one contributed to the fact that the city became a source of special inspiration for subsequent times. The theme of urbanism is specific in the work of contemporary Ukrainian artists, where the very phenomenon of the city is the basis of creative inspiration. The aim of this work is to study the conceptual and programmatic works of contemporary Ukrainian artists to reveal the theme of urbanism in painting and the main trends in displaying the city as a concept in the work of artists.

The idea of creating a comfortable, truly convenient city for all residents excites the minds of architects and urban planners for hundreds of years. A modern city, both a megalopolis and a district center, should be a comfortable environment in terms of functionality, ecology, aesthetics and safety. The article analyzes the methods for assessing the comfort of the urban environment, considers the parameters of a comprehensive assessment of the urban development complex. Modern urban planning concepts, such as smart development and the program of sustainable development of territories, are considered. A critical approach to modernism and constructivism in urban planning is applied. The analysis of urban planning theories based on the historical and cultural uniqueness of the city, as well as "free spaces" in the modern city is carried out on the example of the cities of Chandigarh (India) and Brasilia (Brazil). The ideas of a new urbanism, the humanization of urban space, the concept of the city for people, not for cars are explored. The possibilities of using the balance of social interests in the organization of the urban landscape are considered. The ratio of functionality and privacy of the urban environment is shown by the example of multi-storey and quarter buildings. The parameters necessary to create a comfortable urban environment are offered.

The formation and development of the intelligence as a political and creative force could not exist without the influence of the urban environment. The integration of Kazakh intellectuals into the urban space has led to qualitative changes in such aspects as city, intelligence, and its behavioral patterns. The study of the factors of influence of urban space on the development of social groups and institutions, namely on the qualitative characteristics of the national intelligentsia, the processes of their adaptation to the urban environment is an important task of the humanities, including the historical one. Modern Kazakhstani historiography is in the paradigm of assimilating the results of European and Russian urban history. This article will highlight the historiographic situation in this direction from the point of view of the development of urban issues. The article attempts to analyze the phenomenon the mutual influence of the city and the Kazakh intelligentsia at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries by the principles of historiographic generalization. The city, being a multifunctional space where ideas and innovations are generated, changes not only the landscape, but also the world perception in general. The activities of the national intelligentsia are associated not only with creativity, but primarily with public activity, and determined the development of Kazakhstan in conceptual framework. Today, Kazakhstani historiography is represented by separate studies on the history of the city, intelligentsia, Cossacks, and merchants. At the same time, there are not enough research papers that would consider the population of Kazakhstan and the city as a single complex body, which is in permanent interaction and mutual influence, focusing on the history of everyday life. One of the methods of this study was the historical and genetic one, which allows us to consider the problems in its development and identify patterns. The use of the historicalcomparative method revealed differences in the development of Kazakhstani historiography. A comprehensive study of the urban environment in the historical context allows us to understand the nature of the changes in which society and the state existed, as well as the motives and aspirations of Kazakh intellectuals. One of the results was the identification of common patterns of Soviet and Kazakh historiography, where the city and the intelligentsia are the objects of research and are not considered in close connection and mutual influence. The designated problems did not receive due attention from researchers of both the Soviet and modern periods.

The paper examines the conditions existed during the revolutionary crisis, which affected the urban environment, including the violation of public order, discomfort for citizens, a threat to health, life and property. Changes have been identified in the possibilities of free movement of city residents and their use of landscape resources in urban space. The description of the work of garden and park complexes in the conditions of the transitional political process is given. Transformations in the leisure and entertainment landscape of the urban territory that arose in the conditions of the revolutionary period were analyzed: a change in the range of services and opportunities in the work of the citys garden and park ensemble. The author has identified ways to eliminate the problems, ensure the safety of life and preserve a comfortable environment in the city. The manifestation in a specific urban environment of the all-Russian trend of the crisis in the work of government structures to establish order is correlated with the protection of the garden and park zone. The author has also identified the reasons of regional scale, which influenced the work of local management structures, which turned out to be ineffective in resolving this situation, as well as the activities of specific responsible people in countering the destruction of urban space. The study was carried out on the basis of materials about the provincial Volga city Samara. The source base is office documentation as part of the city government fund.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, London was the most industrially developed city in the world. But the genre of urban landscape and industrial motifs did not find a special response in the British art of that time. By the 1910s, the situation had changed, artists of different generations began to depict the streets of large cities, find stories in the work of factories and the appearance of industrial areas, and develop the genre of portraiture in an urban environment. This moment of the emergence and development of interest in urban subjects, as well as the evolution of the image of the city in the works of London artists of the 1910s, are shown in the article through the review of the artistic life of Great Britain (from genre scenes by W. Sickert to geometric abstractions by W. Lewis).

In the age of headphone culture, where privatized listening while wandering around the city is the norm, the use of headphones raises questions about the experience of the listener and their perception of their urban environment. Of particular interest is the disjunct relationship between black metal music and urban space. Black metal lyrics often portray images of nature and paganism, a concept completely removed from a modern urban landscape. This article draws from Michael Bull’s work on iPod culture as well as ethnographic research to explore the black metal fan’s experience of private listening in a public cityscape. The main focus of this study is the relationship between the ambiguously intertwined visual urban reality and sonic imaginary. The research suggests that the black metal listener can have one of four experiences of time and space resulting in what is referred to as either a split or a blend of the aural imagined experience and the visual reality of the city.

A modern city can be studied through its representation, from the urban to the architectural and detail scales. The image of a city is characterized by a plurality of architectural shapes that are visible across the urban landscape. This chapter describes the scientific method of the representation science, namely the architectural survey and drawing, as knowledge methods, that play the role of tools for the analysis of the structuring place dynamics. The methodology includes the retrieval of existing documentary material and the redrawing of the façades and their subsequent composition within the urban space. The research aim is to show the city image of Bari in its architectural, historical, and cultural essence, implementing a graphic model that can be an effective tool for protection, which contains the reference documentation of each architecture, that can be viewed and studied individually or placed in relation to other façades of the city.

The analysis of the urban space is the first stage in the formation of a systemic understanding and creation of a more comfortable modern city. Historically, “city creation” occurs in accordance with the conditions and principles that exist at the time when the city was formed. Therefore, analyzing the existing structure of urban planning of territories, new parameters and characteristics are introduced, which should fully reflect the quality of urban space for its inhabitants in the current state. The analysis of urban space makes it possible to solve a specific problem or reorganize the urban structure to solve it. Therefore, the search for effective qualitative and quantitative models of analysis of the urban environment is an urgent task today. New methodologies and approaches to urban area analysis are emerging to fully explore this issue. A comprehensive analysis of the urban environment should take place in accordance with the morphology of the city, ie the study of the city through its perception by residents. In the beginning, it is necessary to consider the city as the interaction of its inhabitants with the physical space. The inhabitants of this city define the urban space and its function. This is the main indicator for further analysis and identification of the necessary characteristics in relation to space. The territory needs to be assessed, not only when significant changes are needed in the space for urban needs. A comprehensive analysis of the territory should be carried out with the accepted frequency, because the city is a dynamic system that changes the urban environment every day. Urban space is a system with multilevel connections that work together with each other, so the approach to a comprehensive assessment of urban space can not be simplified.

The paper presents the results of the study of architectural media objects as a new phenomenon in the urban environment. The relevance of the study is associated with an ever-increasing number of both media architecture objects in a modern city, and the emerging problems of their integration into the current context from the point of view of architecture and socio-cultural values of society. Based on the analysis of media facades and media screens both in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and in a number of large Russian cities, their characteristics were determined, which made it possible to propose a classification by size and functional content. As a result, a classification by size and functional content was developed. The authors identified the problems of integrating media objects in the urban space and the main methods of urban planning placement of media screens and media facades.

The article is devoted to one of the types of urban planning studies - the visual-landscape analysis during the integration of high-rise buildings within the historic urban environment for the purposes of providing pre-design and design studies in terms of preserving the historical urban environment and the implementation of the reconstructional resource of the area. In the article formed and systematized the stages and methods of conducting the visual-landscape analysis taking into account the influence of high-rise buildings on objects of cultural heritage and valuable historical buildings of the city. Practical application of the visual-landscape analysis provides an opportunity to assess the influence of hypothetical location of high-rise buildings on the perception of a historically developed environment and optimal building parameters. The contents of the main stages in the conduct of the visual - landscape analysis and their key aspects, concerning the construction of predicted zones of visibility of the significant historically valuable urban development objects and hypothetically planned of the high-rise buildings are revealed. The obtained data are oriented to the successive development of the planning and typological structure of the city territory and preservation of the compositional influence of valuable fragments of the historical environment in the structure of the urban landscape. On their basis, an information database is formed to determine the permissible urban development parameters of the high-rise buildings for the preservation of the compositional integrity of the urban area.
