Predicting tropical cyclone (TC) activities has been a topic of great interest and research. Many existing seasonal forecasting models of TC predict the numbers of TC geneses and landfalls based on the environmental factors in the peak TC season. Here, we utilize the mainstream reanalysis datasets in 1979–2005 and propose a statistical seasonal forecasting model, namely the SYSU model, for predicting the number of TC landfalls on South China based on the preseason environmental factors. The multiple linear regression analysis shows that the April sea level pressure over the tropical central Pacific, the March-April mean sea surface temperature southwest to Australia, the March 850-hPa zonal wind east to Japan, and the April 500-hPa zonal wind over Bay of Bengal are the significant predictors. The model is validated by the leave-one-out cross validation and recent 15-year observations (2006–2020). The correlation coefficient between the modeled results and observations reaches 0.87 (p < 0.01). The SYSU model exhibits 90% hit rate (38 out of 42) in 1979–2020. The Antarctic Oscillation, and the variations of the western North Pacific subtropical high and Intertropical Convergence Zone could be the possible physical linkages or mechanisms. The model demonstrates an operational potential in the seasonal forecasting of TC landfall on South China.

A quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) study on a series of analogs of 5-aryl thiazolidine-2, 4-diones with activity on PPAR-α and PPAR-γwas made using combination of various thermodynamic, electronic and spatial descriptors. Several statistical regression expressions were obtained using multiple linear regression analysis. The best QSAR model was further validated by leave one out cross validation method. The studied revealed that for dual PPAR-α/γactivity dipole-dipole energy and PMI-Z play significant role and contributed positively for PPAR-γand PPAR-α activity respectively. Thus, QSAR brings important structural insight to aid the design of dual PPAR-α /γreceptor agonist.

Provision of competent human resources is important in tobacco farming. Tobacco as commodities pressured by changes in global environmental conditions so that required adaptable farmers. Therefore, this research aimed to: 1) Determine the factors that influence entrepreneurial behavior and performance of the farm; 2) Analyze the influence of personality trait and environmental factors to entrepreneurial behavior; and 3) Analyze the influence of personality trait, environmental factors, and entrepreneurial behavior to the perfor-mance of individual tobacco farming. The effect of independent variables on the measurement dependent variables were analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The personality trait and environment fac-tor influence entrepreneurial behavior with the greatest influence comes from the personality trait. Entrepre-neurial behavior has significant effect on the performance of the business, but not a dominant factor affect-ting the performance of the farm. Economic environment to be the most influential variable on the perfor-mance of the farm. Entrepreneurial behavour alone has no significant effect on performance. Thus, entre-preneurial behaviour should be viewed as only one causal factor in a complex model of factors that promote performance.

On 102 occasions from September 1984 to April 1985, the time of morning departure and evening arrival of a population of black-billed magpies (Pica pica) was recorded at a winter roost near Edmonton, central Alberta. The goal was to determine whether an effect of cold on daily roosting time could be observed and distinguished from that of other environmental factors. Multiple linear regression analysis on the data revealed that, all other things being equal, magpies left the roost later relative to sunrise, and returned to it earlier relative to sunset on colder days, and also (i) on longer days, (ii) on darker, cloudier days, (iii) in the second half of winter, when compared with the first half, and (iv) when fewer birds were using the roost. These results held true only before the occurrence of overt territorial behaviour in March, which coincided with a notable shift towards earlier departures and later arrivals. The larger amount of time spent in the roost by magpies when it was cold may be related to an increased predisposition to inactivity induced by cold temperatures, or to possible microclimatological advantages offered by the roost. The amplitude of this temperature effect may, however, be dependent on the birds' level of hunger. Indeed, the effect of temperature on roosting times was much weaker in the case of departure, i.e., after a long night of food deprivation, than it was in the case of arrival.

Crime prediction research using AI has been actively conducted to predict potential crimes—generally, crime locations or time series flows. It is possible to predict these potential crimes in detail if crime characteristics, such as detailed techniques, targets, and environmental factors affecting the crime’s occurrence, are considered simultaneously. Therefore, this study aims to categorize theft by performing k-modes clustering using crime-related characteristics as variables and to propose an ANN model that predicts the derived categorizations. As the prediction of theft types allows people to estimate the features of the possibly most frequent thefts in random areas in advance, it enables the efficient deployment of police and the most appropriate tactical measures. Dongjak District was selected as the target area for analysis; thefts in the district showed four types of clusters. Environmental factors, representative elements affecting theft occurrence, were used as input data for a prediction model, while the factors affecting each cluster were derived through multiple linear regression analysis. Based on the results, input variables were selected for the ANN model training per cluster, and the model was implemented to predict theft type based on environmental factors. This study is significant for providing diversity to prediction methods using ANN.
