With the vigorous development of infrastructure engineering, there are growing demands for high-performance rapid repair mortar, especially those using environmental-friendly and low-carbon cementitious materials. Hereupon, this work explored an innovative approach for rapid repair mortar preparation using solid waste-based calcium sulfoaluminate cement. The calcium sulfoaluminate cement was first prepared via synergetic–complementary use of industrial solid wastes and then adopted to prepare rapid repair mortar by proportionally mixing with standard sand and four additives (i.e., polycarboxylate superplasticizer, lithium carbonate, boric acid, and latex powder). The mechanistic analysis indicated that the four additives comprehensively optimized the mechanical strengths, fluidity, and setting time of rapid repair mortar by adjusting the hydration process of calcium sulfoaluminate cement. The test results showed that the 2-h compressive and flexural strength, and 1-day bonding strength of the prepared rapid repair mortar were 32.5, 9.2, and 2.01 MPa, respectively, indicating excellent early-age mechanical performance. In addition, the 28-day compressive and flexural strengths of the rapid repair mortar reached 71.8 and 17.7 MPa. Finally, a life cycle assessment and economic analysis indicated that this approach achieved environmental-friendly utilization of industrial solid wastes, and cost-effective and energy-saving natures, which supports current trends towards a circular economy and green sustainable development.

This work aims to investigate the effect of additional flue gas desulfurization gypsum (FGDG) on the properties of calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSAC) blended with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS). The hydration rate, setting time, mechanical strength, pore structure and hydration products of the CSAC-GGBFS mixture containing FGDG were investigated systematically. The results show that the addition of FGDG promotes the hydration of the CSAC-GGBFS mixture and improves its mechanical strength; however, the FGDG content should not exceed 6%.

The purpose of this study is to optimize the composition of CSA (calcium sulfoaluminate) cement with sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and gypsum for binder jetting 3D printing. The preliminary test was carried out with an applicator to decide the proper thickness of one layer before using the 3D printer. A liquid binder was then selected to maintain the shape of the particles. Based on the results, the optimal mixture of dry materials and a liquid activator was derived through various parametric studies. For dry materials, the optimum composition of CSA cement, gypsum, and sand was suggested, and the liquid activator made with sodium silicate solution and VMA (viscosity modified agent) were selected. The setting time with gypsum and sodium silicate was controlled within 30 s. In case of the delayed setting time and the rapid setting mixture, the jetting line was printed thicker or thinner and the accuracy of the printout was degraded. In order to adjust the viscosity of the liquid activator, 10% of the VMA was used in 35% of sodium silicate solution and the viscosity of 200–400 cP was suitable to be sprayed from the nozzle. With this optimal mixture, a prototype of atypical decorative wall was printed, and the compressive strength was measured at about 7 MPa.

The acid–alkaline-inducd corrosive environments inside wastewater concrete pipelines cause concrete structural deterioration and substantial economic losses all over the world. High-performance concrete/mortar (HPC) was designed to have better resistance to corrosive environments, with enhanced service life. However, the durability of HPC in wastewater pipeline environments has rarely been studied. A high-performance mortar mixture (M) reinforced by supplemental materials (including fly ash and silica fume) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers, together with a mortar mixture (P) consisting of cement, sand and water with similar mechanical performance, were both designed and exposed to simulated wastewater pipeline environments. The visual appearance, dimensional variation, mass loss, mechanical properties, permeable pore volume, and microstructure of the specimens were measured during the corrosion cycles. More severe deterioration was observed when the alkaline environment was introduced into the corrosion cycles. Test results showed that the M specimens had less permeable pore volume, better dimensional stability, and denser microstructure than the P specimens under acid–alkaline-induced corrosive environments. The mass-loss rates of the M specimens were 66.1–77.2% of the P specimens after 12 corrosion cycles. The compressive strength of the M specimens was 25.5–37.3% higher than the P specimens after 12 cycles under corrosive environments. Hence, the high-performance mortar examined in this study was considered superior to traditional cementitious materials for wastewater pipeline construction and rehabilitation.

In order to reduce the CO2 emission and cost of binders used in cemented paste backfill (CPB) technology, new blended binders with a large amount of fly ash (FA) were fabricated. Different doses of quicklime and calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CṠA) were used as mineral accelerators to improve the early workability of CPB. The effects of CṠA and quicklime on flowability, compressive strength, pore structure, hydration heat, and hydration evolution were investigated experimentally. The results showed that the addition of quicklime and CṠA reduced the spread diameter of the fresh backfill and improved the mechanical performance of the hardened CPB. With increasing quicklime and CṠA, the cumulative hydration heat of the blended binder distinctly increased in the first 6 h. CṠA improved the initial hydration by increasing the reactivity, and quicklime increased the hydration rate by activating FA. The blended binder (15% quicklime + 10% CṠA) with the lowest CO2 emission and cost had potential application in filling technology.

Vegetable fibers are a hierarchical structure material in the macro, micro and nanometric scales that have been used as reinforcement in cementitious materials. In nanoscale, the nanofibrillated cellulose has the advantage of having good mechanical performance and high specific surface, which contributes to improve the adhesion between fiber and matrix. In hybrid reinforcement, with micro and nanofibers, nanofibrillated cellulose forms bonding with the matrix and acts as stress transfer bridges in the nano-cracking with corresponding strengthening of the cementitious composite. Processing has a strong influence on performance of the fiber cement composite. Two fabrication methods were evaluated: (i) slurry dewatering followed by pressing and (ii) extrusion. The extrusion process strongly depends on the rheological characteristics of the fresh cement material but it can better organize the microstructure of the fiber cement due to the partial orientation of the fibers in the extruder direction. Curing process also plays a key role in the performance of the final product. Accelerated carbonation at early age is a promising technology and a strategy to mitigate the durability problems with the composite materials; it decreases porosity, promotes a higher density in the interface guarantying a good fiber–matrix adhesion and a better mechanical behavior. Alternative MgO-SiO2 clinker free binder is also presented as a suitable alternative to cementitious products reinforced with cellulosic pulps. Finally, mechanical behavior of fiber cement under flexural loading is evaluated by modulus of rupture, fracture toughness, the initial crack growth resistance in cement matrix, and fracture energy that is obtained to evaluate the influence of toughening mechanisms promoted by fibers, such as pullout and bridging, on the mechanical performance of the composites. Degradation during the service life is also crucial for the evaluation of the durability of the resulting materials and components in real applications exposed to different environmental conditions as roofing, partitioning or ceiling elements. It can be concluded that more sustainable and high performance components based on engineered natural raw materials for civil construction can bring valuable contributions for the affordable housing in particular to developing region.

High autogenous shrinkage property is one of the disadvantages of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), which may induce early age cracking and threaten the safety of concrete structure. In the present study, different dosages of calcium sulfoaluminate (CSA) cement were added in UHPC as an effective expansive binder. Hydration mechanism, autogenous shrinkage property, and compressive strength of UHPC were carried out to investigate the effect of CSA addition on the mechanical properties of UHPC. Scanning electron microscopy was also employed to characterize the intrinsic microstructural reasons relating to the changes in macroproperties. Based on the XRD diagram, increasing formation of ettringite and Ca(OH)2 can be found with increasing CSA content up to 15%. In the heat flow results of UHPC with 10% CSA addition, the maximum heat release increases to 2.6 mW/g, which is 8.3% higher than the reference UHPC, suggesting a higher degree of hydration with CSA addition. The results in autogenous shrinkage show that CSA expansion agent plays a significantly beneficial role in improving the autogenous shrinkage of UHPC. The corresponding autogenous shrinkage of UHPC is −59.66 μ ε , −131.11 μ ε , and −182.31 μ ε , respectively, at 7 d with 5%, 10%, and 15% addition, which is 108%, 117%, and 123% reduction compared to the reference specimen without CSA. In terms of compressive strength, UHPC with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% CSA addition has 10.5%, 17.4%, 30.2%, and 22.1% higher compressive strength than that for the reference UHPC at 28 d. Microstructural study shows that there is an extremely dense microstructure in both the bulk matrix and interfacial transition zone of UHPC with 10% CSA addition, which can be attributed to the higher autogenous shrinkage property and can therefore result in higher mechanical performance.

In this study, LiAl-layered double hydroxides Lithium aluminum hydrotalcite (LiAl-LDH) with different specific surface area were prepared by the separate nucleation and aging steps (SNAS) method and then were employed to prepare calcium sulfoaluminate cement-based grouting material (CBGM) paste. The influence of LiAl-LDH slurries on fresh and hardened properties of the CBGM paste was investigated in terms of fluidity, stability, setting time, and compressive strength. Additionally, the hydration process and hydration products of the CBGM paste were characterized by hydration heat, X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis–thermogravimetry, and Fourier transform infrared analyses. The acquired results illustrated that LiAl-LDH with larger specific surface area led to a faster hydration rate at early age, a lower fluidity, a shorter setting time, and a higher stability. Furthermore, due to the crystal nucleation effect, the addition of LiAl-LDH slurries did not cause a new phase to form but changed the morphology and increased the amount of hydration products, yielding higher compressive strength.

Calcium sulphoaluminate cement (CSA) has the characteristics of quick hardening, high early strength and high impermeability, however its strength growth persistence in the middle and late stages (after the age of 3 days) is poor. In order to improve this disadvantage, the pilot production of alite (C3S) modified CSA (AMCSA) clinker was carried out by liquid phase manipulation and barium ion doping technology. The effects of different dosages of gypsum on the hydration and hardening properties of AMCSA, such as setting time, hydration rate, compressive strength and hydration products, were studied. The results show that the mineral content of ye’elimite, C2S, C3S and iron phase in the calcined AMCSA clinker are 48.5 wt.%, 32.6 wt.%, 11.7 wt.% and 7.2 wt.% respectively, which are close to the designed mineral composition. The stable coexistence of ye’elimite and C3S in the same clinker system is realized. The initial and final setting time of AMCSA are retarded with the increasing gypsum dosage. When the gypsum dosage is 15 wt.% under the experimental conditions in this study, the AMCSA mortar reaches the highest compressive strength at every age. The strength of AMCSA mortar at 28 days is still significantly improved compared with that at 3 days, which indicates that the shortcoming of the low strength growth persistence of CSA in the middle and late stages is improved.
