Background: In a large UK study we investigated the relationship between smartphone addiction and sleep quality in a young adult population.Methods: We undertook a large UK cross-sectional observational study of 1,043 participants aged 18 to 30 between January 21st and February 30th 2019. Participants completed the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version, an adapted Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Score Index and reported smartphone use reduction strategies using both in-person (n = 968) and online (n = 75) questionnaires. A crude and adjusted logistic regression was fitted to assess risk factors for smartphone addiction, and the association between smartphone addiction and poor sleep.Results: One thousand seventy one questionnaires were returned, of which 1,043 participants were included, with median age 21.1 [interquartile range (IQR) 19–22]. Seven hundred and sixty three (73.2%) were female, and 406 reported smartphone addiction (38.9%). A large proportion of participants disclosed poor sleep (61.6%), and in those with smartphone addiction, 68.7% had poor sleep quality, compared to 57.1% of those without. Smartphone addiction was associated with poor sleep (aOR = 1.41, 95%CI: 1.06–1.87, p = 0.018).Conclusions: Using a validated instrument, 39% young adults reported smartphone addiction. Smartphone addiction was associated with poor sleep, independent of duration of usage, indicating that length of time should not be used as a proxy for harmful usage.

Objective: Research shows that poor sleep quality and smartphone addiction are common problems among university students. This study was planned to evaluate the quality of sleep in students at Pamukkale University and to investigate its relationship with smartphone addiction. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the university campus in 2017-2018. Its dependent variable was low sleep quality. Independent variables were smartphone addiction, features related to smartphone addiction, socio-demographic features and other questioned features. The total number of students attending normal education in seven faculties and two colleges for four years was 20862. The minimum sample size of the study was calculated as 1088. Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used. The data were analyzed with the SPSS program. Results: The mean age was of the participants 21.39 ± 2.21. The sleep quality of students with a PSQI total score of more than five was defined as ‘poor’. The frequency of poor sleep quality was 52.4%. The frequency of smartphone addiction was 34.6% according to the SAS-SV scale. It was found that the frequency of poor sleep quality was significantly higher in students with smartphone addiction compared to others. Hypertension affects approximately 26% of the adult population and it is a leading cause of death in up to 13.5% worldwide. Hypertension is a disease with the highest prevalence in Indonesia, so good treatment and prevention are needed. Several studies suggest that there is a correlation between hypertension risk factors and the disturbance of sleep quality. Therefore, it is necessary to develop preventive and promotive efforts to obtain optimum blood pressure in patients with hypertension to avoid complications or even death. This study aims to find out the correlation between sleep quality and the value of blood pressure in the elderly ?60 years old in Batu City. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Batu City in 2020. Stratified random sampling was performed to select the respondents. A validated PSQI questionnaire and sphygmomanometer were used to assess sleep quality and blood pressure, respectively. A Chi-Square test was used to test the hypothesis. There were 391 respondents involved in this study. Most of the respondents have poor sleep quality, 205 respondents (52,43%) of which 41 respondents (20%) have normal blood pressure, and 164 respondents (80%) have high blood pressure. The statistical analysis shows a significant correlation (p=0,000) between sleep quality and blood pressure. In conclusion, hypertension is associated with poor sleep quality in the geriatric population in Batu City.

Background: Smartphone with its various functionalities has become an essential part of our daily activities and its use has been increasing. This has raised concern about its overuse and addiction especially in students. It is known that poor sleep is very common among medical students; there are many studies on sleep quality and its determinants in medical students but very few relating sleep quality and smartphone addiction. The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between smartphone use severity and sleep quality among medical students of KIMS, Hubballi. Methods: A cross‑sectional study on sample of 240 undergraduate medical students KIMS, Hubballi was conducted. Students were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire, Smart phone addiction scale (SAS) and Pittsburgh sleep quality inventory (PSQI). SAS score and PSQI scores were co-related. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to identify the variables independently associated with level of sleep quality. Results: Out of 240 subjects 117 (48.75%) were poor sleepers & 123 (51.25%) were good sleepers according to PSQI global sleep score. According to SAS score 123 (51.2%) were low users and 117 (48.75%) were high users of Smart phone. The mean (SD) PSQI global score was 4.8 (2.49) and mean (SD) SAS score was 102.93 (22.13). There was positive correlation between SAS score & PSQI score (r=0.343, p<0.001). Gender (β=0.141, p=0.021) & SAS score (β=0.292, p<0.001) were the significant predictors of global PSQI score. Conclusions: This study concludes that in medical students smartphone addiction affects sleep quality significantly and males are particularly more at risk of having poor sleep quality due to excessive smartphone use.

Introduction. During the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, social media exposure and the use of electronic devices have increased; still, these behaviors may cause adverse health effects. Objective. This study assessed sleep quality, insomnia, mood, and psychological aspects among physically (n = 46) and non-physically (n = 53) active individuals during self-isolation throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and examined their association with smartphone addiction. Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted among adult Brazilian citizens in self-isolation for at least 60 days; ninety-nine volunteers from different Brazilian regions were enrolled in the online survey. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-Short Form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Insomnia Severity Index, the Brunel Mood Scale, and the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version were used to assess the study outcomes. Results. The results indicate moderate and large correlations of smartphone addiction with mood subscales, insomnia (r = .52), anxiety (r = .49), depression (r = .49), and stress (r = .49) symptoms. AbstractIntroductionFood intake behavior is implicated in many chronic health issues, including obesity. Thus, understanding the underlying factors that affect food intake is important. Several studies have associated sleep restriction to increased dietary intake and poor food choices, which can be driven by hedonic mechanisms, specially food palatability. Given that people eat for different reasons other than stress, including boredom, anxiety, sadness or joy, our aim was to study the potential association between sleep quality and the cognitive-behavioral nature of food intake (eating behaviors, EB), as well as their impact on body mass index in a population of young adults.Materials and MethodsOne thousand twenty eight young adults (78% females; 21.4 ± 4.1years) were included in a cross-sectional study. The following questionnaires were used: Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index to assess sleep quality (scores > 5 indicate poor sleep quality), the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire to assess the three dimensions of EB (emotional, uncontrolled and restraint eating) (Higher scores indicate higher EB). Additionally, height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and the level of physical activity were evaluated. Statistical analysis were performed using SPSS v24, and adjusted for confounding variables.ResultsSixty one percent of the studied population had a poor sleep quality, whereas no significant associations were found between poor sleep quality, gender or age. Poor sleep quality was associated with uncontrolled (p < 0.001) and emotional (p < 0.001) eating, as well as with BMI (p < 0.001). In addition, emotional eating was associated to BMI (p < 0.001). Finally, linear regression model showed that BMI is associated with poor sleep quality (p < 0.01) and emotional eating (p < 0.001).DiscussionOur findings suggest that poor sleep quality is frequent among young adults. Furthermore, poor sleep quality is associated with higher emotional and uncontrolled eating, showing that poor sleep might be associated with a higher tendency to over eat when coping to emotionally negative emotions (sadness, anger, depression, anxiety), and a high tendency to lose control over food intake itself. Finally, the association between poor sleep quality and high emotional eating can have a negative impact over BMI, even in young adults. Hence, interventions designed to improve weight status would benefit from focusing on sleep quality in order to reduce emotional and uncontrolled eating.

Abstract Introduction Some studies have shown associations between sleep quality and dizziness. However, this association has not been investigated in teachers. Objective To verify a possible association between dizziness complaint and sleep quality in teachers. Methods Cross-sectional study developed with 96 school teachers (mean age of 47.8 ± 9.8 years). To assess dizziness, an audiological assessment was performed, which was the same one used in routine audiological care (Miller protocol). The dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) was applied to those individuals who reported dizziness. To evaluated sleep quality, the Pittsburgh sleep quality index was used. Results The prevalence of dizziness was 22.9% (n = 22). Of these, 77.3% (n = 17) were women, 63.6% (n = 14) demonstrated poor sleep quality, and 54.5% (n = 12) were young adults (27–48 years). In the comparison between the dizziness and the control groups, no statistically significant differences were found (p> 0.05). The analysis adjusted for the confounding variables showed a difference for men in the sleep efficiency variable (p = 0.043); young adults showed a statistically significant difference in the total score (p = 0.021) and total sleep time (p = 0.029). There was a moderate correlation between DHI and total time in bed (p = 0.036, r = 0.497) and DHI and sleep efficiency (p = 0.014; r = -0.582). Conclusion Dizziness influences the quality of sleep in teachers, especially that of the youngest and male patients. There was a moderate correlation between total time in bed, sleep efficiency, and DHI, demonstrating that sleep quality should be considered an important factor in the assessment and rehabilitation process of dizziness.

Introduction: An adolescent aggregate is an age group with a high rate of smartphone addiction. Poor sleep quality in adolescents is one of the negative effects resulting from smartphone addiction Objective: To analyse poor sleep quality differences among adolescents with smartphone addiction compared to those without Methods: Analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach was used in this study, involving 165 secondary school students as the participants. Study variables include smartphone addiction and poor sleep quality. The instruments used for data collection are the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and the Smartphone Addiction Scale: Short Version (SAS-SV). The statistical analysis performed was the Mann Whitney test. Results: The statistical test results obtained a p-value < alpha (0,000 < 0,05), which means at a 95% confidence level, there was a difference in the poor sleep quality score between adolescents with smartphone addiction compared to those without. Adolescents with smartphone addiction have higher poor sleep quality scores compared to adolescents without smartphone addiction. Conclusion: Adolescents should be able to limit the use of the smartphone according to their needs and minimise smartphone use before going to bed at night.

Introduction: Smartphone use has been related to health problems. Studies have indicated that the use of smartphones is associated with Sleep disturbances. However, little is known about the association between Smartphone addiction and sleep quality in Saudi Arabia.Objective: To determine the relationship between sleep quality and the use of a smartphone, specifically before sleep.Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted at four primary healthcare centers with a total of 205 patients participated in the study using a convenience sampling technique. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Smartphone Addiction Scale – Short Version (SAS-SV) were used to measure association of Sleep Quality and Smartphone addiction.Results: Two-hundred-fiveparticipants enrolled in the study, of which 99 were female (51%) with a response rate of 84%. Mean age was 36 ±13 years for all participants. Mean PSQI scores were higher among females, single, frequent smartphone users, and unemployed sub- categories; thus, they indicated poorer sleep quality. There was also a significant negative association between age and PSQI scores t(193)= -2.45, p=0.015. Finally, there was a significant positive association between mean SAS-SV score and categorical global PSQI scores t(193)= 3.4, p=0.001.Conclusion: Our study showsahigh prevalence of smartphone addiction and poor sleep quality. Younger age, being single, heavy usage hours of smartphones, and high SAS-SV are significant factors associated with poorer sleep quality.

Abstract Introduction To explore the prevalence of depressive symptoms and the associated risk factors in frontline nurses under COVID-19 pandemic. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from February 20, 2020 to March 20, 2020 and involved 562 frontline nurses. The effective response rate was 87.68%. After propensity score matched, there were 498 participants left. Extensive characteristics, including demographics, dietary habits, life-related factors, work-related factors, and psychological factors were collected based on a self-reported questionnaire. Specific scales measured the levels of sleep quality, physical activity, depressive symptoms, perceived organization support and psychological capital. Adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were determined by binary paired logistic regression. Results Of the nurses enrolled in the study, 50.90% had depressive symptoms. Three independent risk factors were identified: poor sleep quality (OR = 1.608, 95% CI: 1.384–1.896), lower optimism of psychological capital (OR = 0.879, 95% CI: 0.805–0.960) and no visiting friend constantly (OR = 0.513, 95% CI: 0.286–0.920). Conclusions This study revealed a considerable high prevalence of depressive symptoms in frontline nurses during the COVID-19 outbreak, and identified three risk factors, which were poor sleep quality, lower optimism of psychological capital, and no visiting friend constantly. Protecting mental health of nurses is important for COVID-19 pandemic control and their wellbeing. These findings enrich the existing theoretical model of depression and demonstrated a critical need for additional strategies that could address the mental health in frontline nurses for policymakers.
