Bio-inspirations from soft-bodied animals provide a rich design source for soft robots, yet limited literature explored the potential enhancement from rigid-bodied ones. This paper draws inspiration from the tooth profiles of the rigid claws of the Boston Lobster, aiming at an enhanced soft finger surface for underwater grasping using an iterative design process. The lobsters distinguish themselves from other marine animals with a pair of claws capable of dexterous object manipulation both on land and underwater. We proposed a 3-stage design iteration process that involves raw imitation, design parametric exploration, and bionic parametric exploitation on the original tooth profiles on the claws of the Boston Lobster. Eventually, 7 finger surface designs were generated and fabricated with soft silicone. We validated each design stage through many vision-based robotic grasping attempts against selected objects from the Evolved Grasping Analysis Dataset (EGAD). Over 14,000 grasp attempts were accumulated on land (71.4%) and underwater (28.6%), where we selected the optimal design through an on-land experiment and further tested its capability underwater. As a result, we observed an 18.2% improvement in grasping success rate at most from a resultant bionic finger surface design, compared with those without the surface, and a 10.4% improvement at most compared with the validation design from the previous literature. Results from this paper are relevant and consistent with the bioresearch earlier in 1911, showing the value of bionics. The results indicate the capability and competence of the optimal bionic finger surface design in an amphibious environment, which can contribute to future research in enhanced underwater grasping using soft robots.

AbstractThe design of ITER, a large-scale nuclear fusion reactor, is intertwined with profound research and development efforts. Tough problems call for novel solutions, but the low maturity of those solutions can lead to unexpected problems. If designers keep solving such emergent problems in iterative design cycles, the complexity of the resulting design is bound to increase. Instead, we want to show designers the sources of emergent design problems, so they may be dealt with more effectively. We propose to model the interplay between multiple problems and solutions in a problem network. Each problem and solution is then connected to a dynamically changing engineering model, a graph of physical components. By analysing the problem network and the engineering model, we can (1) derive which problem has emerged from which solution and (2) compute the contribution of each design effort to the complexity of the evolving engineering model. The method is demonstrated for a sequence of problems and solutions that characterized the early design stage of an optical subsystem of ITER.

Abstract The aim of sustainability is to fulfil the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations. It is also a rising area of concern within industry, it is therefore important that graduate designers are equipped with the skills to accommodate sustainability issues as well as demands from industry. Additionally, the product design stage during New Product Development has been identified to have the greatest impact on the sustainability of the entire product, however how educated designers are on the topic of sustainability is unclear. An initial literature review has been conducted to investigate design education on sustainability as well as teaching styles. Following this the study identifies and reviews UK Product Design courses to establish the current status of sustainability integration in higher education. The exploration into university prospectuses has found that around half of UK universities implement sustainability in some way, however there are limited courses which dedicate specific modules to sustainability. Additionally, links with industry and accreditation organizations between UK product design courses have been confirmed, but there is no definite information to suggest that the universities use this to aid in the implementation sustainability education. From this review future research directions have been outlined.

The main purpose of this research was to result Interactive Instructional Media Oriented to Creative Problem Solving Model. The method of this research used research and development method by 4-D of development model those were consisted by Define Stage, Design Stage, Develop Stage and Disseminate Stage. However, this research was limited to Develop. The research subjects on individual limited test were as much 2 students, on field trials were as much 20 students. Instrument those were used to get the data in this research were questionnaire and documentation. Technical that was used to analyse the data was percentage descriptive counting. The result of this research showed that development of Interactive Instructional Media Oriented to Creative Problem Solving Model had gone well that was proved by means of learning result was 81.10 when the simulation of using interactive instructional media

Purpose The recent COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the declining conditions of many of the hospital buildings, especially in developing countries. Past studies have shown inadequate maintenance practices but how far regarding Nigerian public hospital buildings is yet to receive empirical research. This paper aims to investigate the underlying issues leading to inadequate maintenance practices and proffers policy options to improve Nigerian public hospital buildings via an unexplored dimension. Design/methodology/approach The study used a mixed research design method involving both qualitative and quantitative data. First, results from the qualitative phase were analysed and verified at the quantitative phase through a well-structured questionnaire, developed from the qualitative findings across hospital maintenance experts (work/maintenance department, health-care provider, design team and health-care building/service contractor) in Abuja, Lagos and Benin City. Findings Insufficient funds for maintenance works, absence of planned maintenance programmes, inadequately trained personnel, etc., emerged as the maintenance inadequacies in the public hospital buildings across the cities covered. The paper categorised the cause of inadequate maintenance practices of public hospital buildings into six groups: statutory requirements, design stage, construction stage, budget for maintenance task, managing maintenance unit activities and user’s perception regarding maintenance management. Research limitations/implications This paper is limited to maintenance practices of Nigerian public hospital buildings. Future research is needed to evaluate factors that will enhance outsourcing maintenance and the use of the 4th industrial revolution (building information modelling for refurbishment and building automation systems) amongst others in maintenance practices of public hospital buildings. Practical implications As part of the practical implication, the government and hospital administrators should make provision for adequate funding and accountability of annual maintenance budgetary allocation. Also, the government should establish a national maintenance policy for public infrastructure with an emphasis on preventive maintenance and contractor’s reputation, outstanding pedigree, technical and financial soundness during build maintenance contract award, etc., were recommended. Originality/value This paper reveals that the stakeholders, especially hospital administrators, policymakers and political office holders that are concern with maintenance budget, approval and disbursement concerning maintenance practices in public hospital buildings need to reawaken to her responsibility because of the inadequate implementation across the cities covered.

The concept of Green ICT has been in consideration in almost all industrial sectors. The Telecommunication (Telco) sector in one such major area where Green ICT plays a crucial role. Telcos have opportunities and treats due the Green ICT initiatives. This chapter outlines these implications and proposes a Green Telco business model to match with Green ICT initiatives. This chapter then proposes the way and methodology to achieve Green Telco business model through the Business Processes Management based on more practical aspects. The concept of Business Processes Management (BPM) framework is initially discussed in its four stages. This is then followed by the use of this BPM framework to transform and manage business processes for a Green Telco. The business transformation to Green Telco is discussed as part of a BPM framework made up of the Strategy stage, Design stage, Realization stage and the Operational stage. This chapter finally concludes that the Green Telco business model is not a destination but a continuous journey and the BPM framework provides an excellent basis to achieve those Green Telco goals.

As coastal urbanization increases globally, the subsequent effects on marine animals, especially endangered species, inhabiting nearshore waters have become a research priority. The smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata, once abundant in US waters, now only persists in a few parts of its former range, including South Florida. Many areas utilized by smalltooth sawfish are estuarine systems or other shallow coastal habitats, making this species particularly vulnerable to threats associated with coastal development. To date, P. pectinata has been understudied in the waters in and around Biscayne Bay, Florida, a coastal waterway subjected to the urbanization of adjacent Miami-Dade County. Here, we summarize data from reported smalltooth sawfish encounters dating as far back as 1895 (N = 90) and detail opportune recordings (incidental catches, acoustic detections, and baited remote underwater videos) of sub-adults and adults (N = 14 individuals) in Biscayne Bay and the adjacent reef tract. These data demonstrate historical and increased contemporary use of the study area by this imperiled species, suggesting potential local and regional recovery. Most documented sawfish occurrences were near the urban center, indicating a need to understand the effects of coastal urbanization on sawfish and on the species' recovery potential. We suggest priorities for future research on P. pectinata in the study area that will assist in addressing regional management goals and contribute to understanding the ecology of smalltooth sawfish under environmental change.

The research aim of art creation and presentation is to revitalize traditional glass painting in Indonesia by utilizing plexiglas flexibility as a medium in fine artwork. This is due to the use of glass as a medium is very heavy and easily broken when moved or taken for display. The research method used in the creation of art uses experimental method with the order of exploration stage, design stage, and realization stage. Exploration stage is an exploration activity that explores the source of ideas, including exploring plexiglass materials using various types of water-based and oil-based paints, as well as gravur and grinder techniques to erode the surface. Next is collecting data and references, as well as processing and analyzing data which results are used as the basic for making designs. Design Stage visualizes exploration results into various design alternatives which then the best is chosen and used as references in making works. Realization Stage is the process of manifesting the chosen design into the real work. Research showed that the use of plexiglass material as a medium of traditional glass painting has a very good results, and plexiglas can fully replace glass in terms of aplicable to various paint types, even plexiglas has excellence over ordinary glass that is water-based acrylic paint can be applied better in plexiglas and can fused (compound). Exploration of works visualization using plexiglas as medium has a very good result, as applied to ordinary glass. Exploration of works visualization has a very good result, some works still use traditional motifs and symbols combined with modern motifs and symbols with illustrative, expressionist and pop art style.

It is a big challenge for educator especially for elementary level to stimulate young students to learn English joyful. Vocabulary mastery is the basic concern to be enhanced as spoken an also written. But, the phenomenon is most of students have lack of motivation to learn especially English subject. Many factors influence it which comes from students’ side or teachers’ side such as conventional teaching method and media. As teacher and also scientist, we are called to give contribution to education field to develop an appropriate teaching media for millennial era as now. It is Barcorious Android Application (BAA) which provides audio and visual content which facilitated students’ curious and learning by doing method. There were six stages have been passed to develop this BAA such as need analysis stage, design stage, implementation stage, coding stage, testing stage and packaging stage.

This research is motivated by the fact that physics learning content based on mobile learning can be accessed widely and most students have cellphones, but it has not been widely used to increase student enthusiasm in learning physics. Physics Learning Media Based on Mobile Learning is an effort to solve this problem. One of them is by Development of Physics Learning Media-Based Mobile Learning Using Adobe Flash CS6. This study aimed to determine the development of learning media products based on mobile learning using adobe flash CS6 and to examine the the feasibility of learning media based on mobile learning using Adobe Flash CS6 at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. This type of research was a research and development starting from the defining stage (define), the design stage (design), and the development stage (develop). This mobile learning-based physics learning media was tested for validity by 2 experts of media, and tested for its effectiveness by 33 students. The results achieved were the m-learning media products that used the adobe flash CS6 application with validity criteria that were relevant, consistent and have practical usability, as well as effective implementation. These instructional media products can be used by teaching staff and students in higher education. as well as effective implementation. Students have difficulty learning mathematics, so it can be concluded that mathematics is complicated, especially for elementary school students. It has an impact on student learning outcomes that decline. This study aims to produce LKPD on material distribution based on a valid and practical PMRI approach for learning. The development research used is research and development (R&D) using a 4D model developed by Thiagarajan consisting of four stages: define stage, design stage, development stage, and dissemination stage. Data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, and observations. The instrument used to collect data is a questionnaire. The technique used to analyze the data is descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results obtained from the validation test by experts with an average rating of 87.5% are excellent categories. The student responses in the limited trial obtained an average percentage of 84.58% in the efficient category, and the student responses in the field trial with 82.40% in the efficient category. The results of the assessment of the educator's response were 88.75% in the efficient category. Based on these data, the LKPD in the distribution material based on the PMRI approach has met the criteria for validity and practicality so that the LKPD developed is feasible to be used in the learning process.
