During the past decade, cosmic-ray neutron sensing technology has enabled researchers to reveal soil moisture spatial patterns and to estimate landscape-average soil moisture for hydrological and agricultural applications. However, reliance on rare materials such as helium-3 increases the cost of cosmic-ray neutron probes (CRNPs) and limits the adoption of this unique technology beyond the realm of academic research. In this study, we evaluated a novel lower cost CRNP based on moderated ultra-thin lithium-6 foil (Li foil system) technology against a commercially-available CRNP based on BF3 (boron trifluoride, BF-3 system). The study was conducted in a cropped field located in the Konza Prairie Biological Station near Manhattan, Kansas, USA (325 m a.s.l.) from 10 April 2020 to 18 June 2020. During this period the mean atmospheric pressure was 977 kPa, the mean air relative humidity was 70%, and the average volumetric soil water content was 0.277 m3 m−3. Raw fast neutron counts were corrected for atmospheric pressure, atmospheric water vapor, and incoming neutron flux. Calibration of the CRNPs was conducted using four intensive field surveys (n > 120), in combination with continuous observations from an existing array of in situ soil moisture sensors. The time series of uncorrected neutron counts of the Li foil system was highly correlated (r2 = 0.91) to that of the BF-3 system. The Li foil system had an average of 2,250 corrected neutron counts per hour with an uncertainty of 2.25%, values that are specific to the instrument size, detector configuration, and atmospheric conditions. The estimated volumetric water content from the Li foil system had a mean absolute difference of 0.022 m3 m−3 compared to the value from the array of in situ sensors. The new Li foil detector offers a promising lower cost alternative to existing cosmic-ray neutron detection devices used for hectometer-scale soil moisture monitoring.

Soil moisture is a critical variable influencing plant water uptake, rainfall-runoff partitioning, and near-surface atmospheric conditions. Soil moisture measurements are typically made using either in-situ sensors or by collecting samples, both methods which have a small spatial footprint or, in recent years, by remote sensing satellites with large spatial footprints. The cosmic ray neutron sensor (CRNS) is a proximal technology which provides estimates of field-averaged soil moisture within a radius of up to 240 m from the sensor, offering a much larger sensing footprint than point measurements and providing field-scale information that satellite soil moisture observations cannot capture. Here we compare volumetric soil moisture estimates derived from a novel, less expensive lithium (Li) foil-based CRNS to those from a more expensive commercially available 3He-based CRNS, to measurements from in-situ sensors, and to four intensive surveys of soil moisture in a field with highly variable soil texture. Our results indicate that the accuracy of the Li foil CRNS is comparable to that of the commercially available sensors (MAD = 0.020 m3 m−3), as are the detection radius and depth. Additionally, both sensors capture the influence of soil textural variability on field-average soil moisture. Because novel Li foil-based CRNSs are comparable in accuracy to and much less expensive than current commercially available CRNSs, there is strong potential for future adoption by land and water managers and increased adoption by researchers interested in obtaining field-scale estimates of soil moisture to improve water conservation and sustainability.

Abstract. The Cosmic-Ray Neutron Sensor (CRNS) can provide soil moisture information at scales relevant to hydrometeorological modelling applications. Site-specific calibration is needed to translate CRNS neutron intensities into sensor footprint average soil moisture contents. We investigated temporal sampling strategies for calibration of three CRNS parameterisations (modified N0, HMF, and COSMIC) by assessing the effects of the number of sampling days and soil wetness conditions on the performance of the calibration results while investigating actual neutron intensity measurements, for three sites with distinct climate and land use: a semi-arid site, a temperate grassland, and a temperate forest. When calibrated with 1 year of data, both COSMIC and the modified N0 method performed better than HMF. The performance of COSMIC was remarkably good at the semi-arid site in the USA, while the N0mod performed best at the two temperate sites in Germany. The successful performance of COSMIC at all three sites can be attributed to the benefits of explicitly resolving individual soil layers (which is not accounted for in the other two parameterisations). To better calibrate these parameterisations, we recommend in situ soil sampled to be collected on more than a single day. However, little improvement is observed for sampling on more than 6 days. At the semi-arid site, the N0mod method was calibrated better under site-specific average wetness conditions, whereas HMF and COSMIC were calibrated better under drier conditions. Average soil wetness condition gave better calibration results at the two humid sites. The calibration results for the HMF method were better when calibrated with combinations of days with similar soil wetness conditions, opposed to N0mod and COSMIC, which profited from using days with distinct wetness conditions. Errors in actual neutron intensities were translated to average errors specifically to each site. At the semi-arid site, these errors were below the typical measurement uncertainties from in situ point-scale sensors and satellite remote sensing products. Nevertheless, at the two humid sites, reduction in uncertainty with increasing sampling days only reached typical errors associated with satellite remote sensing products. The outcomes of this study can be used by researchers as a CRNS calibration strategy guideline.

This paper explores the accuracy in using an artificial neural network (ANN) to estimate root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) at multiple worldwide locations using only in situ surface soil moisture (SSM) as a training dataset. The paper also addresses the transferability of the trained ANN across climatic and soil texture conditions. Data from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) were collected for several networks with variable soil texture and climate classes. Several scaling, feature extraction, and training approaches were tested. An artificial neural network employing rolling averages (ANNRAV) of SSM over 10, 30, and 90 days was developed. The results show that applying a standard scaling (SSCA) to the ANN input features improves the correlation, Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and root mean square error (RMSE) for 52%, 91%, and 87%, respectively, of the tested stations, compared to MinMax scaling (MMSCA). Different training sets are suggested, namely, training on data from all networks, data from one network, or data of all networks excluding one. Based on these trainings, new transferability (TranI) and contribution (ContI) indices are defined. The results show that one network cannot provide the best prediction accuracy if used alone to train the ANN. They also show that the removal of the less contributing networks enhances performance. For example, elimination of the densest network (SCAN) from the training enhances the mean correlation by 20.5% and the mean NSE by 42.5%. This motivates the implementation of a data filtering technique based on the ANN’s performance. A median, max, and min correlation of 0.77, 0.96, and 0.65, respectively, are obtained by the model after data filtering. The performances are also analyzed with respect to the covered climatic regions and soil texture, providing insights into the robustness and limitations of the approach, namely, the need for complementary information in highly evaporative regions. In fact, the ANN using only SSM to predict RZSM has low performance when decoupling between the surface and root zones is observed. The application of ANN to obtain spatialized RZSM will require integrating remote sensing-based surface soil moisture in the future.

An analysis of hydrologic soil properties and the prediction of volumetric soil water content during four summers have been done for a site located in the balsam fir (Abiesbalsamea (L.) Mill.) forest of the Lac Laflamme watershed. The hydrologic properties were used to identify three different soil layers, THIRSTY, a soil moisture model using the Penman evapotranspiration formula, was applied to predict daily volumetric water content of these layers. Predictions of soil moisture with the calibrated model were close to the observed data for the median layer (20–60 cm from the soil surface) and less accurate for the surface layer (0–20 cm) where important transpiration activities take place. The model appeared unreliable for predicting soil water content of the bottom layer (60–100 cm) which was often saturated by groundwater. The calibration of the model required modifications of the observed values of the available water content at field capacity and the relative root density factor and was adjusted with the crop coefficient of the Penman evapotranspiration formula. These modifications of observed physical parameters raise the question of the feasibility of extrapolating the model to other sites without extensive calibration. The high sensitivity to variations of the crop coefficient applied to the evapotranspiration equation indicated that a more physically based transpiration model, supported by field-oriented process studies, would be required to improve the model's performance.

<p>Reliable measurements of soil moisture (SM) are required for many applications worldwide, e.g., for flood and drought forecasting, and for improving the agricultural water use efficiency (e.g., irrigation scheduling). For the retrieval of large-scale SM datasets with a high temporal frequency, remote sensing methods have proven to be a valuable data source. (Sub-)daily SM is derived, for example, from observations of the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) since 2007. These measurements are available on spatial scales of several square kilometers and are in particular useful for applications that do not require fine spatial resolutions but long and continuous time series. Since the launch of the first Sentinel-1 satellite in 2015, the derivation of SM at a spatial scale of 1 km has become possible for every 1.5-4 days over Europe (SSM1km) [1]. Recently, efforts have been made to combine ASCAT and Sentinel-1 to a Soil Water Index (SWI) product, in order to obtain a SM dataset with daily 1 km resolution (SWI1km) [2]. Both datasets are available over Europe from the Copernicus Global Land Service (CGLS, https://land.copernicus.eu/global/). As the quality of such a dataset is typically best over grassland and agricultural areas, and degrades with increasing vegetation density, validation is of high importance for the further development of the dataset and for its subsequent use by stakeholders.</p><p>Traditionally, validation studies have been carried out using in situ SM sensors from ground networks. Those are however often not representative of the area-wide satellite footprints. In this context, cosmic-ray neutron sensors (CRNS) have been found to be valuable, as they provide integrated SM estimates over a much larger area (about 20 hectares), which comes close to the spatial support area of the satellite SM product. In a previous study, we used CRNS measurements to validate ASCAT and S1 SM over an agricultural catchment, the Hydrological Open Air Laboratory (HOAL), in Petzenkirchen, Austria. The datasets were found to agree, but uncertainties regarding the impact of vegetation were identified.</p><p>In this study, we validated the SSM1km, SWI1km and a new S1-ASCAT SM product, which is currently developed at TU Wien, using CRNS. The new S1-ASCAT-combined dataset includes an improved vegetation parameterization, trend correction and snow masking. The validation has been carried out in the HOAL and on a second site in Marchfeld, Austria’s main crop producing area. As microwaves only penetrate the upper few centimeters of the soil, we applied the soil water index concept [3] to obtain soil moisture estimates of the root zone (approximately 0-40 cm) and thus roughly corresponding to the depth of the CRNS measurements. In the HOAL, we also incorporated in-situ SM from a network of point-scale time-domain-transmissivity sensors distributed within the CRNS footprint. The datasets were compared to each other by calculating correlation metrics. Abstract The cosmic-ray method for measuring soil moisture, used in the Cosmic-Ray Soil Moisture Observing System (COSMOS), relies on the exceptional ability of hydrogen to moderate fast neutrons. Sources of hydrogen near the ground, other than soil moisture, affect the neutron measurement and therefore must be quantified. This study investigates the effect of atmospheric water vapor on the cosmic-ray probe signal and evaluates the fast neutron response in realistic atmospheric conditions using the neutron transport code Monte Carlo N-Particle eXtended (MCNPX). The vertical height of influence of the sensor in the atmosphere varies between 412 and 265 m in dry and wet atmospheres, respectively. Model results show that atmospheric water vapor near the surface affects the neutron intensity signal by up to 12%, corresponding to soil moisture differences on the order of 0.10 m3 m−3. A simple correction is defined to identify the true signal associated with integrated soil moisture that rescales the measured neutron intensity to that which would have been observed in the atmospheric conditions prevailing on the day of sensor calibration. Use of this approach is investigated with in situ observations at two sites characterized by strong seasonality in water vapor where standard meteorological measurements are readily available.

Abstract. The need for accurate, real-time, reliable, and multi-scale soil water content (SWC) monitoring is critical for a multitude of scientific disciplines trying to understand and predict the Earth's terrestrial energy, water, and nutrient cycles. One promising technique to help meet this demand is fixed and roving cosmic-ray neutron probes (CRNPs). However, the relationship between observed low-energy neutrons and SWC is affected by local soil and vegetation calibration parameters. This effect may be accounted for by a calibration equation based on local soil type and the amount of vegetation. However, determining the calibration parameters for this equation is labor- and time-intensive, thus limiting the full potential of the roving CRNP in large surveys and long transects, or its use in novel environments. In this work, our objective is to develop and test the accuracy of globally available datasets (clay weight percent, soil bulk density, and soil organic carbon) to support the operability of the roving CRNP. Here, we develop a 1 km product of soil lattice water over the continental United States (CONUS) using a database of in situ calibration samples and globally available soil taxonomy and soil texture data. We then test the accuracy of the global dataset in the CONUS using comparisons from 61 in situ samples of clay percent (RMSE  =  5.45 wt %, R2  =  0.68), soil bulk density (RMSE  =  0.173 g cm−3, R2  =  0.203), and soil organic carbon (RMSE  =  1.47 wt %, R2  =  0.175). Next, we conduct an uncertainty analysis of the global soil calibration parameters using a Monte Carlo error propagation analysis (maximum RMSE  ∼  0.035 cm3 cm−3 at a SWC  =  0.40 cm3 cm−3). In terms of vegetation, fast-growing crops (i.e., maize and soybeans), grasslands, and forests contribute to the CRNP signal primarily through the water within their biomass and this signal must be accounted for accurate estimation of SWC. We estimated the biomass water signal by using a vegetation index derived from MODIS imagery as a proxy for standing wet biomass (RMSE  <  1 kg m−2). Lastly, we make recommendations on the design and validation of future roving CRNP experiments.

Abstract. Cosmic ray neutron sensors (CRS) are a promising technique to measure soil moisture at intermediate scales. To convert neutron counts to average volumetric soil water content a simple calibration function can be used (the N0-calibration of Desilets et al., 2010). This calibration function is based on soil water content derived directly from soil samples taken within the footprint of the sensor. We installed a CRS in a mixed forest in the lowlands of north-eastern Germany and calibrated it 10 times throughout one calendar year. Each calibration with the N0-calibration function resulted in a different CRS soil moisture time series, with deviations of up to 0.12 m3 m-3 for individual values of soil water content. Also, many of the calibration efforts resulted in time series that could not be matched with independent in situ measurements of soil water content. We therefore suggest a new calibration function with a different shape that can vary from one location to another. A two-point calibration proved to be adequate to correctly define the shape of the new calibration function if the calibration points were taken during both dry and wet conditions covering at least 50 % of the total range of soil moisture. The best results were obtained when the soil samples used for calibration were linearly weighted as a function of depth in the soil profile and non-linearly weighted as a function of distance from the CRS, and when the depth-specific amount of soil organic matter and lattice water content was explicitly considered. The annual cycle of tree foliation was found to be a negligible factor for calibration because the variable hydrogen mass in the leaves was small compared to the hydrogen mass changes by soil moisture variations. Finally, we provide a best practice calibration guide for CRS in forested environments.

Abstract Better quantification of the spatiotemporal distribution of soil moisture across different spatial scales contributes significantly to the understanding of land surface processes on the Earth as an integrated system. While observational data for root-zone soil moisture (RZSM) often have sparse spatial coverage, model-simulated soil moisture may provide a useful alternative. TOPMODEL-Based Land Surface–Atmosphere Transfer Scheme (TOPLATS) has been widely studied and actively modified in recent years, while a detailed regional application with evaluation currently is still lacking. Thus, TOPLATS was used to generate high-resolution (30 arc s) RZSM based on coarse-scale (0.125°) forcing data over part of the Arkansas–Red River basin. First, the simulated RZSM was resampled to coarse scale to compare with the results of Mosaic, Noah, and VIC from NLDAS. Second, TOPLATS performance was assessed based on the spatial absolute difference among the models. The comparison shows that TOPLATS performance is similar to VIC, but different from Mosaic and Noah. Last, the simulated RZSM was compared with in situ observations of 16 stations in the study area. The results suggest that the simulated spatial distribution of RZSM is largely consistent with the distribution of topographic index (TI) in most instances, as topography was traditionally considered a major, but not the only, factor in horizontal redistribution of soil moisture. In addition, the finer-resolution RZSM can reflect the in situ soil moisture change at most local sites to a certain degree. The evaluation confirms that TOPLATS is a useful tool to estimate high-resolution soil moisture and has great potential to provide regional soil moisture estimates.

&lt;p&gt;The validation of surface soil moisture products derived from SAR satellites data is challenged by the difficulty of reliably measuring in-situ soil moisture at shallow soil depths of a few centimetres, consistent with the penetration depth of the microwave beam. Our analysis shows that the apparent accuracy of the remote sensing products is underestimated by comparison with inconsistent probe data or measurements at greater soil depths. Our alternative approach uses in-situ meteorological measurements to determine rainfall and potential evapotranspiration, to be used with soil hydrological properties as inputs to a water balance model to estimate surface soil moisture independently of the satellite data. In-situ soil moisture measurements are used to validate and refine the model parameters. The choice of appropriate soil hydrological parameters with which to convert remotely sensed surface soil moisture indices to volumetric moisture content is shown to have a significant impact on the bias and offset in the regression analysis. To illustrate this, Copernicus SSM data is analysed by this method for a number of COSMOS-UK soil moisture monitoring sites, showing a significant improvement in the coefficient of determination, bias and offset over regression analysis using in-situ measurements from soil moisture probes or the cosmic ray soil moisture sensor itself. This will benefit users of such products in agriculture, for example, in determining actual soil moisture deficit.&lt;/p&gt;
