The aim of the present study was to describe gastric granuloma caused by Anisakis pegreffii in Sphyraena viridensis caught in the central Mediterranean Sea. Sixty-eight S. viridensis specimens were collected from different fish markets on the east coast of Sicily. Coelomic organs were observed both macroscopically and with the aid of stereomicroscope. Parasite specimens and lesioned tissues were collected for identification, histological and molecular analyses. Twelve specimens (p = 17.6%) were positive for the presence of nematode larvae, morphologically identified as larvae of Anisakis sp., with values of mean abundance and mean intensity of 0.9 and 4.8, respectively. One large female specimen showed massive parasite infection associated with nodular lesions of the gastric wall. By histology, several nematode larvae encysted through the gastric wall were found. The parasite bodies were surrounded by a granulomatous reaction made up of macrophages, epithelioid cells, some lymphocytes and an external connective sheet. Molecular analysis of 18S rRNA and cox2 genes from Anisakis sp. collected larvae, identified them as A. pegreffii. The lesions here described, though macroscopically superimposable on human eosinophilic granuloma, microscopically showed significant differences in the inflammatory cells involved and in the type of immune reaction.

SUMMARYThe syndrome “visceral larva migrans” produced by migration of nematode larvae (commonly Toxocara species) in the extraintestinal tissues in unusual hosts, including man (particularly children of dirt eating age), with the production of reactive granulomatous lesions, was first described in 1952. About 200 cases have been reported since. Well documented cases are rare due to the difficulty in histological verification. Three cases have been reported in Canada but these were not verified. We believe the present report is the first verified case of visceral larva migrans in Canada and the fifth case of human cerebral involvement by Toxocara in the English literature. It is hoped that this report will emphasize the need for further research into the role of host versus parasite and will underline the potential danger, albeit remote, of household pets to children. Indeed, prevention is the only line of attack, as there is no effective drug against the migrating larvae of Toxocara.

In this work a total of 949 fish samples were analysed for the identification of nematode larvae belonging to the Anisakidae family. Biomolecular application for the identification of Anisakidae larvae can be an optimal instrument for the traceability of fish products, described on the Reg. EC 178/2002. Results confirm a correlation between geographical distribution of fishes and presence of specific Anisakid larvae. FAO 37 zone (Mediterranean sea) showed a prevailing distribution of <em>Anisakis pegreffii</em> and a minimal presence of A. simplex s.s. in hybrid form with <em>Anisakis pegreffii</em>. FAO 27 zone showed a prevailing distribution of <em>A. simplex s.s</em>. in fish like Brosme (<em>Brosme brosme</em>) and infestation prevalence of Pseudoterranova krabbei and <em>P. decipiens s.s</em>. in <em>Gadus morhua</em>. Obtained results validate the hypothesis that molecular biology methods for identifying Anisakidae larvae are effective traceability markers of fish products.

Purpose. This study investigates the association between focal nodular mass with low signal in Hoffa’s fat pad adjacent to anterior femoral cartilage of the knee (FNMHF) and focal cartilage abnormality in this region.Method. The magnetic resonance fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition sequence (MR FIESTA) sagittal and axial images of the B1 and C1 region (described later) of 148 patients were independently evaluated by two reviewers and categorized into four categories: normal, FNMHF with underlying focal cartilage abnormality, FNMHF with normal cartilage, and cartilage abnormality with no FNMHF.Results. There was a significant association (p=0.00) between FNMHF and immediate adjacent focal cartilage abnormality with high interobserver agreement. The absence of focal nodular lesions next to the anterior femoral cartilage has a very high negative predictive value for chondral injury (97.8%). Synovial biopsy of focal nodular lesion done during arthroscopy revealed some fibrocollagenous tissue and no inflammatory cells.Conclusion. We postulate that the FNMHF adjacent to the cartilage defects is a form of normal healing response to the cartilage damage. One patient with FHMHF and underlying cartilage abnormality was rescanned six months later. In this patient, the FNMHF disappeared and normal cartilage was observed in the adjacent region which may support this theory.

Periapical granuloma is a histological term that refers to the formation of a mass of granulomatous tissue around the apex of a tooth resulting from inflammation and necrosis of the pulp tissue. It consists of an infiltrate of inflammatory cells such as macrophages, plasmocytes and lymphocytes, as well as fibroblasts, collagen fibers and capillaries. Periapical surgery is an alternative for preserving the tooth in the oral cavity in cases where periapical inflammation is persistent even after treatment of root canals. The objective of this study was to report a clinical case in which the surgical technique was used to remove granulomatous lesions from a patient, female, with a history of recurrent periapical abscess without painful symptomatology in the region of the anterior 11,12 and 13 teeth. The histopathological exam demonstrated the presence of a granulomatous tissue with intense inflammatory infiltrate mixed, permeated with lymphocytes and high number of plasmocytes, confirming the diagnosis of periapical granuloma. The treatment was considered successful since the patient remained asymptomatic and there was incorporation of the inorganic bovine bone graft and initiation of bone neoformation in the periapical region.

This work was done to investigate Nocardiosis in cattle in order to evaluate the incidence of nocardiali mastitis in Al- dejiala station, bacteriological examination was conducted on 90 milk samples obtaited from mastitic cows Nocardia asteroides was found in 25 out of 90 (27. 77% mastitic cows. This M.O was recorered in pure culture in 5. cases and as mixed with other microorganisms in 20 cases . The gross examination of the affected udders showed multiple nodular lesions in firm fibrotic udders, some of them formed draining sinus which exuded pus to the exterior multifocal nodules of varying size were seen in the lungs Microscopic examination of the affected  udders revealed pyogranulomatous lesions in different areas of the glandular parenchyma multiple classical granulomatous lesions were also noticed in the lung tissues.

Background: Swine tuberculosis (TB) is a highly progressive granulomatous infectious disease. The cases usually go undiagnosed and become a potent source of infection to other animals and humans. In Ayodhya and Sultanpur districts, no such study has been conducted so far. Keeping in view the zoonotic importance of this disease, the present study was, therefore, designed to study the prevalence of generalized swine tuberculosis in middle gangetic plain zone of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Methods: Forty-two (42) pigs were presented for postmortem at Department of Veterinary Pathology, C.V. Sc. and A.H., ANDUAT, Ayodhya from nearby villages of Ayodhya and Sultanpur districts from April 2017 to February 2020. Pigs were screened for typical lesions of tubercles throughout the body during postmortem examination.Result: The prevalence was 7.14% out of 42 pigs presented for postmortem examination. Eight pigs (19.04%) had nodules in either lungs or liver but these were diagnosed negative for TB on ZN (Ziehl-Neelsen) staining. Typical tubercles were evident in liver, spleen and lungs and were characterized by the presence of circumscribed yellowish white raised lesions of various sizes and numbers. Microscopically, granulomatous lesions revealed necrotic areas surrounded by mixed inflammatory cells including macrophages, lymphocytes and plasma cells. The ZN stain reveals presence of acid fast bacilli in impression smear made from lung, spleen and liver.

Mycobacteriosis was diagnosed for the first time outside a national park in free-ranging wild animals on a game ranch in Zambia. A Kafue lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis) was found dead with tuberculous lesions on a ranch near Lusaka. Acid-fast bacilli were found in the affected organs. Mycobacteria were isolated from these tissues. A bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus) was found dead on the same ranch with multiple superficial abscesses in the neck region, extensive granulomatous lesions in the lung, the bronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes and several nodular lesions in the spleen. Few acid-fast bacilli were found in the exudate from the abscesses and lesions in the affected organs. Histologically the lesions resembled those of tuberculosis, but mycobacteria could not be isolated. In addition, 1 Kafue lechwe among 37 wild ungulates of 13 species shot on the ranch showed typical tuberculous lesions in the lungs, but the diagnosis was not confirmed by bacterial isolation. The role of the Kafue lechwe as maintenance host for tuberculosis as well as in the possible spread of this disease to other wildlife are discussed.

Rosai–Dorfman disease is a rare benign histiocytic proliferative disease of unknown cause that, in exceptional cases, presents with lesions confined to the skin. Clinically variable types of lesions such as papules, nodules and plaques have been reported. We present a case of a 27-year-old woman with a 1-year history of erythematous papular and nodular lesions on the malar and right axillary regions, previously misdiagnosed as acne. She reported no fever, malaise or weight loss, while physical examination and laboratory workup were normal. Bacteriological and mycobacteriological cultures were negative. Histopathological findings showed dense infiltration of inflammatory cells involving the entire dermis, consisting of large macrophages with emperipolesis, S100 and CD68 positive, neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells. The patient was treated with oral prednisolone without improvement. Dapsone was subsequently initiated with favourable clinical response. The present article aimed to emphasise the clinical and histological differential diagnosis and share the treatment experience.

Dhaka Zoo with 2000 animals of 184 species and five million visitors a year is important from a public health point of view. This study was conducted to investigate coccidioidomycosis in captive animals at Dhaka Zoo. One hundred and two tissue samples were collected and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin at necropsy of 36 animals of 25 species. Twenty five animals were suffering from granulomatous diseases, of which ten were identified as coccidioidomycosis. Clinical history, nodular lesions at necropsy, granulomatous lesions on histopathology and characteristic spores on special staining confirmed coccidioidomycosis in six rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), one horse (Equus caballus), one common langur (Presbytis entellus), one beisa oryx (Oryx beisa beisa) and one reticulated python (Python molurus).
