Fe-doped LiTaO3 thin films with a low and high Fe concentration (labeled as LTO:Fe-LC and LTO:Fe-HC, respectively) were deposited by magnetron sputtering from two home-made targets. The dopant directly influenced the crystalline structure of the LiTaO3 thin films, causing the contraction of the unit cell, which was related to the incorporation of Fe3+ ions into the LiTaO3 structure, which occupied Li positions. This substitution was corroborated by Raman spectroscopy, where the bands associated with Li-O bonds broadened in the spectra of the samples. Magnetic hysteresis loops, zero-field cooling curves, and field cooling curves were obtained in a vibrating sample magnetometer. The LTO:Fe-HC sample demonstrates superparamagnetic behavior with a blocking temperature of 100 K, mainly associated with the appearance of Fe clusters in the thin film. On the other hand, a room temperature ferromagnetic behavior was found in the LTO:Fe-LC layer where saturation magnetization (3.80 kAm−1) and magnetic coercivities were not temperature-dependent. Moreover, the crystallinity and morphology of the samples were evaluated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively.

Magnesium substituted nickel cadmium ferrite nanoparticles MgxNi0.6−xCd0.4Fe2O4(fromx= 0 to 0.6 with step 0.1) have been synthesized by the chemical coprecipitation route. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that the obtained powders have a single phase of cubic spinel structure. The crystallite sizes calculated from XRD data have been confirmed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showing that the powders are consisting of nanosized grains with an average size range 5–1.5 nm. Magnetic hysteresis loops were traced at 6.5 K as well as at room temperature using VSM. It was found that, due to the Mg2+-ions substitution, the values of saturation magnetizationMsfor the investigated samples were decreased, whereas the coercive fieldHcincreased. Both zero field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) curves are measured in the temperature range (6.5–350 K) and the values of blocking temperatureTBwere determined. No considerable variation in the values ofTBwas observed with increasing Mg-content, whereas the values of the effective anisotropy constantKeffwere increased.

ABSTRACTNanocomposite Co-C thin films of about 15 nm thick were prepared by pulsed filtered vacuum arc deposition. The films were characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, non-Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, magnetic force microscopy and magnetic measurements. The as-deposited films were amorphous. After annealing at 350°C for one hour in vacuum (< 10−3 Pa), the films were found to consist of nanocrystalline Co grains encapsulated in carbon. The superparamagnetism of the annealed Co36C64 film was demonstrated by the measurement of DC susceptibility and magnetic hysteresis using a SQUID magnetometer. The superparamagnetic relaxation blocking temperature was marked to be about 12K by the peak of the zero-field-cooled magnetization under a field of 100 Oe. The magnetic properties of these annealed granular Co-C films transform from superparamagnetism to ferromagnetism when the Co concentration increases.

ABSTRACTWe have conducted a systematic magnetic characterization of a series of Zn1-xCoxO samples with different cobalt composition. The Zn1-xCoxO thin films were epitaxially grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on quartz and ZnO substrates. The Co composition was adjusted by controlling the bubbler temperature and carrier gas flow. The magnetization measurements were performed using a Quantum Design MPMS system, which utilizes a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Magnetic hysteresis curves were observed at 5K which persisted up to 300K, possibly characteristic of ferromagnetic behavior. Temperature dependent magnetization was recorded under both zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) conditions. Changes of magnetization were observed under ZFC and FC conditions in some samples from 5K up to 300K. Composition-dependent changes in magnetization were also observed among samples with different cobalt doping, indicative of ferromagnetism related directly to cobalt incorporation. Magnetic field dependent magnetization at various temperatures with field up to 5 Tesla suggests the Zn1-xCoxO layers were not paramagnetic.

AbstractThe magnetic properties of magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) strongly depend on their chemical and physical parameters, which can be regulated by a controlled synthesis process. To improve the quality of the obtained nanoparticles, their surface is often modified with organic compounds (from the group of surfactants, sugars, proteins, or organic acid). In this study, we synthesized magnetite nanoparticles with a surface modified with the organic compound DMSA. Then, the nanocrystallites were characterized in terms of structure and morphology. To investigate the role of DMSA and to understand the adsorption mechanism, FTIR measurements were carried out. Using Mössbauer spectroscopy, we investigated temperature-induced changes in the magnetic properties of prepared samples. The spectra were recorded in a wide temperature range (from 4 K to 390 K) for two types of samples: powders and ferrofluids with various concentrations. In the case of powder samples, the superparamagnetic doublet appeared at room temperature. For magnetic suspensions, the spectra were more complicated. They consisted of superposition of asymmetrically broadened sextets and doublets, which was caused by the occurrence of long-range dipole-dipole interactions. These interactions affected the magnetic properties of the material and increased the blocking temperature. Additionally, the magnetic hysteresis and zero field cooling-field cooling (ZFC/FC) curves were measured with the use of a vibrating sample magnetometer.

Co2.73Fe0.27O4 nanoparticles were synthesized using the heat-decomposition method followed by annealing treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that most of the peaks are close to the data for antiferromagnetic Co3O4, while weak peaks of CoFe2O4 are also detected. It indicates that the prepared particles can be reckoned as a composite with a small size of the FM particles embed in a large thickness of the AFM matrix. The magnetic hysteresis loops of Co2.73Fe0.27O4 powders were measured at 10 K by using the zero-field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) procedures and show negative and downward shifts, and the shifts finally disappear when temperature increases to 200 K. We suggest that exchange bias effect in Co2.73Fe0.27O4 is mainly related with the exchange interactions at the interfaces between the FM CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and the frozen spins around them.

Thin films of ZnWO4, a promising photocatalytic and scintillator material, were deposited for the first time using a reactive dual magnetron sputtering procedure. A ZnO target was operated using an RF signal, and a W target was operated using a DC signal. The power on the ZnO target was changed so that it would match the sputtering rate of the W target operated at 25 W. The effects of the process parameters were characterized using optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy, including energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that stoichiometric microcrystalline ZnWO4 thin films could be obtained, by operating the ZnO target during the sputtering procedure at a power of 55 W and by post-annealing the resulting thin films for at least 10 h at 600 °C. As FTO coated glass substrates were used, annealing led as well to the incorporation of Na, resulting in n+ doped ZnWO4 thin films.

ABSTRACTExcimer laser ablation with an in situ heat treatment was used to prepare high quality superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x thin films on (100)-SrTiO3 and (100)-LaAlO3 substrates. A pulsed excimer laser (XeCl; 308 nm) was used to ablate a rotating, bulk YBa2Cu3O7−x target at a laser energy density of 2–3 J/cm2. Based on four-probe dc resistance measurements, the films exhibited superconducting transition temperatures (Tc, midpoint) of 88 and 87K with 2K (90–10%) transition widths for SrTiO3 and LaAlO3, respectively. Transport critical current densities (Jc) measured at 77K were 2 × 106 and 1 × 106 A/cm2 in zero field for SrTiO3 and LaAlO3, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed the films to be highly oriented, with the c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface.

La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte thin films were fabricated on La0.7Sr0.3Cr0.5Mn0.5O2.75 (LSCM) porous anode substrates by Radio Frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering method. The compatibility between LSGM and LSCM was examined. Microstructures of LSGM thin films fabricated were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effect of substrate temperature on LSGM thin films was clarified by X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Deposition rate increases firstly at the range of 50°C~150°C, and then decreases at the range of 150°C ~300°C. After annealing, perovskite structure with the same growth orientation forms at different substrate temperature. Crystallite size decreases at first, to the minimum point at 150°C, then increases as substrate temperature rises.

Transparent conductive Cu-In-O thin films were deposited by reactive DC magnetron sputtering. Two types of targets were used. The first was In target covered with a fan-shaped Cu plate of the same radius and the second was Cu target on which six In grains of 1.5mm was placed with equal distance between each other. The samples were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV/VIS spectrophotometer, four-probe measurement etc. SEM shows that the surfaces of all the samples are very smooth. EDX shows that the samples contain Cu, In as well as O, and different targets result in different atomic ratios of Cu to In. A diffraction peak related to rhombohedra-centered In2O3(012) is observed in the XRD spectra of all the samples. For both the two targets, the transmittance decreases with the increase of O2flow rates. The direct optical band gap of all the samples is also estimated according to the transmittance curve. For both the two targets, different O2flow rates result in different sheet resistances and conductivities. The target of Cu on In shows more controllability in the composition and properties of Cu-In-O films.

Purpose This paper aims to determine the crystallite size and microstrain values of AgSiN thin films using potential approach called approximation method. This method can be used as a replacement for other determination methods such as Williamson-Hall (W-H) plot and Warren-Averbach analysis. Design/methodology/approach The monolayer AgSiN thin films on Ti6Al4V alloy were fabricated using magnetron sputtering technique. To evaluate the crystallite size and microstrain values, the thin films were deposited under different bias voltage (−75, −150 and −200 V). X-ray diffraction (XRD) broadening profile along with approximation method were used to determine the crystallite size and microstrain values. The reliability of the method was proved by comparing it with scanning electron microscopy graph and W-H plot method. The second parameters’ microstrain obtained was used to project the residual stress present in the thin films. Further discussion on the thin films was done by relating the residual stress with the adhesion strength and the thickness of the films. Findings XRD-approximation method results revealed that the crystallite size values obtained from the method were in a good agreement when it is compared with Scherer formula and W-H method. Meanwhile, the calculations for thin films corresponding residual stresses were correlated well with scratch adhesion critical loads with the lowest residual stress was noted for sample with lowest microstrain and has thickest thickness among the three samples. Practical implications The fabricated thin films were intended to be used in antibacterial applications. Originality/value Up to the knowledge from literature review, there are no reports on depositing AgSiN on Ti6Al4V alloy via magnetron sputtering to elucidate the crystallite size and microstrain properties using the approximation method.
