Propellers are a vital component to achieve successful and reliable operation of drones. However, the drone developer faces many challenges while selecting a propeller and a common approach is to perform static thrust measurement. However, the selection of a propeller using a static thrust measurement system is time-consuming. To overcome a need for the static thrust system a virtual model has been developed for measuring both the static and dynamic thrust of a single and coaxial propeller. The virtual model is reliable enough to minimize the need for full-scale tests. The virtual model has been built using two open-source software Qblade and OpenFoam. Qblade is employed to obtain the lift and drag coefficients of the propeller’s airfoil section. OpenFoam is utilized to perform the flow simulations of propellers and for obtaining the thrust and torque data of the propeller. The developed virtual model is validated with experimental data and the experimental data are obtained by developing a multi-force balance system for measuring thrusts and torques of a single and a pair of coaxial contra-rotating propellers. The data obtained from the propeller virtual model are compared with the measurement data. For a single propeller, the virtual model shows that the estimated forces are close to the experiment at lower rotational speeds. For coaxial propellers, there are some deviations at the rear propeller due to the turbulence and flow disturbance caused by the front propeller. However, the computed thrust data are still accurate enough to be used in selecting the propeller. The studies indicate that in the future, these virtual models will minimize a need for experimental testing.

During gliding, dragonfly wings can be interpreted as acting as ultra-light aerofoils which, for static reasons, have a well-defined cross-sectional corrugation. This corrugation forms profile valleys in which rotating vortices develop. The cross-sectional configuration varies greatly along the longitudinal axis of the wing. This produces different local aerodynamic characteristics. Analyses of the C(L)/C(D) characteristics, where C(L) and C(D) are the lift and drag coefficients, respectively (at Reynolds numbers Re of 7880 and 10 000), using a force balance system, have shown that all cross-sectional geometries have very low drag coefficients (C(D, min)<0.06) closely resembling those of flat plates. However, the wing profiles, depending upon their position along the span length, attain much higher lift values than flat plates. The orientation of the leading edge does not play an important role. The detectable lift forces can be compared with those of technical wing profiles for low Re numbers. Pressure measurements (at Re=9300) show that, because of rotating vortices along the chord length, not only is the effective profile form changed, but the pressure relationship on the profile is also changed. Irrespective of the side of the profile, negative pressure is produced in the profile valleys, and net negative pressure on the upper side of the profile is reached only at angles of attack greater than 0 degrees. These results demonstrate the importance of careful geometrical synchronisation as an answer to the static and aerodynamic demands placed upon the ultra-light aerofoils of a dragonfly.

AbstractIn this article, we follow a thorough matrix presentation of material parameter identification using a least-square approach, where the model is given by non-linear finite elements, and the experimental data is provided by both force data as well as full-field strain measurement data based on digital image correlation. First, the rigorous concept of semi-discretization for the direct problem is chosen, where—in the first step—the spatial discretization yields a large system of differential-algebraic equation (DAE-system). This is solved using a time-adaptive, high-order, singly diagonally-implicit Runge–Kutta method. Second, to study the fully analytical versus fully numerical determination of the sensitivities, required in a gradient-based optimization scheme, the force determination using the Lagrange-multiplier method and the strain computation must be provided explicitly. The consideration of the strains is necessary to circumvent the influence of rigid body motions occurring in the experimental data. This is done by applying an external strain determination tool which is based on the nodal displacements of the finite element program. Third, we apply the concept of local identifiability on the entire parameter identification procedure and show its influence on the choice of the parameters of the rate-type constitutive model. As a test example, a finite strain viscoelasticity model and biaxial tensile tests applied to a rubber-like material are chosen.

Abstract In this paper, we propose the new method to identify the Operating Deflection Shapes (ODSs) from the measurement data of time domain. At first, we present the identification scheme of ODSs based on a state-space model. Then the scheme is extended to identify the ODSs adaptively for the time-varying systems by using the URV Decomposition (URVD). Proposed scheme is able to decompose the deformation of a structure under operating condition into the underlying superposition of well excited frequency components. This paper introduces the algorithm and shows the effectiveness of our proposed scheme applyed for both synthesized and experimental data.

During the past few years an extensive amount of experimental data on split flaps has been made available to the aircraft industry, through the publications of aeronautical research laboratories, both in this country and abroad. In general, each publication deals with one particular aspect of the problem, and when the effect of wing flaps on the performance of an aircraft is being estimated a certain amount of difficulty may be experienced in deciding which of the many reports available gives results most readily applicable to the case being considered ; and what allowances, if any, should be made for wing taper, flap cut-out, fuselage, etc.In this report the available data has been analysed with a view to answering these questions, and presented in such a form that it may be readily applied to determine the most probable change in the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing that may be expected from the use of this type of flap.From the appendix an estimate of the accuracy of the method can be obtained, as a comparison with full-scale data is given for lift and drag, and for the other flap characteristics the original curves have been reproduced.

Abstract This paper presents a novel mechatronic device to support a gait reeducation process. The conceptual works were done by the interdisciplinary design team. This collaboration allowed to perform a device that would connect the current findings in the fields of biomechanics and mechatronics. In the first part of the article shown a construction of the device which is based on the structure of an overhead travelling crane. The rest of the article contains the issues related to machine control system. In the prototype, the control of drive system is conducted by means of two RT-DAC4/PCI real time cards connected with a signal conditioning interface. Authors present the developed control algorithms and optimization process of the controller settings values. The summary contains a comparison of some numerical simulation results and experimental data from the sensors mounted on the device. The measurement data were obtained during the gait of a healthy person.

Interest in vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) is experiencing a renaissance after most major research projects came to a standstill in the mid 90’s, in favour of conventional horizontal-axis turbines (HAWTs). Nowadays, the inherent advantages of the VAWT concept, especially in the Darrieus configuration, may outweigh their disadvantages in specific applications, like the urban context or floating platforms. To enable these concepts further, efficient, accurate, and robust aerodynamic prediction tools and design guidelines are needed for VAWTs, for which low-order simulation methods have not reached yet a maturity comparable to that of the Blade Element Momentum Theory for HAWTs’ applications. The two computationally efficient methods that are presently capable of capturing the unsteady aerodynamics of Darrieus turbines are the Double Multiple Streamtubes (DMS) Theory, based on momentum balances, and the Lifting Line Theory (LLT) coupled to a free vortex wake model. Both methods make use of tabulated lift and drag coefficients to compute the blade forces. Since the incidence angles range experienced by a VAWT blade is much wider than that of a HAWT blade, the accuracy of polars in describing the stall region and the transition towards the “thin plate like” behaviour has a large effect on simulation results. This paper will demonstrate the importance of stall and post-stall data handling in the performance estimation of Darrieus VAWTs. Using validated CFD simulations as a baseline, comparisons are provided for a blade in VAWT-like motion based on a DMS and a LLT code employing three sets of post-stall data obtained from a wind tunnel campaign, XFoil predictions extrapolated with the Viterna-Corrigan model and a combination of them. The polar extrapolation influence on quasi-steady operating conditions is shown and azimuthal variations of thrust and torque are compared for exemplary tip-speed ratios (TSRs). In addition, the major relevance of a proper dynamic stall model into both simulation methods is highlighted and discussed.

Recent advances in power and efficiency of computerized modeling methods has made it easier to develop accurate tire models. These newer models are now created with such accuracy that it has become easy to predict the experimental tire’s behavior and characteristics. These models are helpful with determining tire, tire-road, and tire-soil interaction properties. By creating virtual models, the overall capital for research and development can be reduced as well as replacing unavailable experimental tires for research. This research paper mainly focuses on the validation of computer generated FEA tire models which are then used for the prediction of the experimental tire’s rolling resistance, static and dynamic characteristics. Experimental data, such as rolling resistance and vertical acceleration are used in validation simulations in order to tune the virtual model to match the experimental tire’s behavior. The tire that was used for this research is a six-groove 445/50R22.5 FEA truck tire, which was constructed and validated over the course of this research.

The paper presents the basis of the analytical model for calcu-lating the loss of strength in ce-ment compositions exposed to elevated temperatures. This model is to replace the classical method of calculating the fire resistance of the loss of load-bearing capacity. The experimental data were taken as initial indicators. Based on the implemented calculations it would become possible to predict the occurrence of ultimate state by loss strength and the reliability of practical indicators obtained by means of full-scale tests

Virtual Model Basin (VMB) developed based on RANS CFD Approach along with VOF model to simulate free-surface has been used to perform benchmark studies and the results are presented in this paper. The VMB based on general purpose CFD solver ANSYS FLUENT has been used to simulate resistance and diffraction problems for a Navy surface combatant hull and the results are validated against experimental data. The resistance simulations are done to assess two turbulence models and best among the two is used to solve the diffraction problem. The validation results suggest that the VMB approach reproduces the flow features, forces and moments accurately.
