This article presents an indicator weighting method for constructing composite indices to assess sustainable development at the subnational level. The study uses an analytic hierarchy process (AHP), which is considered relevant, since it establishes links between the indicators that make up the different sustainable development goals (SDG). For this purpose, 28 indicators defined by experts constitute the base to evaluate the progress towards sustainable development of the Aburrá Valley region, located in Antioquia, Colombia. The results show that health, employment, and education indicators obtained higher weights, while environmental indicators received the most reduced weights. Likewise, the model proves to be consistent using a consistency ratio, which generates the possibility of replicating this model at different subnational levels.

Environmentally sustainable development is a multidimensional concept that emphasizes the integration of economy, society and environment within a region and the realization of dynamic balance. How to objectively environmentally sustainable development has been a major concern for scholars and policy makers. To address this problem effectively, we first obtain the indicators of environmentally sustainable development based on the pressure-state-response (PSR) framework. Then, we introduce variable weight factors in the traditional analytic hierarchy process (AHP), so that the weights assigned by experts to sustainable development indicators can change with time or space. In this way, we propose a new and improved weight distribution method called variable weigh analytic hierarchy process. Finally, we employ indicators of environmentally sustainable development based on PSR and variable weigh analytic hierarchy process to evaluate the sustainable development of cities in a case country. Our study found that: (1) indicators of environmentally sustainable development should consist of three parts: pressure indicators of environmentally sustainable development, state indicators of environmentally sustainable development, and response indicators of sustainable development; (2) with the variable weigh analytic hierarchy process, our ranking hierarchy process can handle dynamic changes among indicators better than the traditional AHP method and better reflect the true states of indicators.

During the last few decades, sustainable development (SD) has increasingly received attention globally. Therefore, international organizations and researchers sought to assess progress towards SD at different territorial levels. However, most of the studies were conducted at the city level and a very small number of studies has conducted at the urban periphery territory. This study aims to fill the current research gap through assessing the progress towards SD in the urban periphery of Greater Cairo (GC) in Egypt between 1996-2017. Eight composite indicators have been employed to assess the progress towards SD in this territory. These composite indicators were constructed based on the 14 individual indicators associated with sustainable development goals. The results showed meaningful progress achieved in the peripheral municipalities of GC, particularly in infrastructure and education indicators, while the economic and environmental indicators have deteriorated, particularly after the civic revolution of 2011. In addition, the study found a development gap between the urban periphery and the main urban agglomeration in GC, particularly in the infrastructure aspect. These results highlight the deficiencies that exist in the urban periphery of GC which help decision-makers to prepare appropriate policies to improve SD in such territory.

The article emphasizes the fact that traditional socio-economic indicators do not reflect the challenges of sustainable development adequately, and this is particularly true for the widely-used GDP indicator. In this connection the elaboration of sustainable development indicators is needed, taking into account economic, social and environmental factors. For Russia, adaptation and use of concepts and basic principles of calculation methods for adjusted net savings index (World Bank) and human development index (UNDP) as integral indicators can be promising. The authors have developed the sustainable development index for Russia, which aggregates and allows taking into account balanced economic, social and environmental indicators.

Grassland resources are an important part of land resources. Moreover, it has the functions of regulating the climate, windproof and sand fixation, conserving water sources, maintaining water and soil, raising livestock, providing food, purifying the air, and beautifying the environment in terrestrial ecosystems. Grassland resource evaluation is of great significance to the sustainable development of grassland resources. Therefore, this paper improves the BP neural network, uses the comprehensive index method to calculate the weights in the analytic hierarchy process, and constructs a water resources carrying capacity research and analysis system based on the entropy weight extension decision theory. Meanwhile, this paper analyzes different levels of resource and environmental carrying capacity to achieve the purpose of comprehensive evaluation of resource and environmental carrying capacity. In addition, based on the theory of sustainable development, under the guidance of the principle of index system construction, this paper studies the actual situation of grassland resources and the availability and operability of data, and combines with the opinions given by experts to form an evaluation index system of grassland resources and environmental carrying capacity. Finally, through the actual case study analysis, it is concluded that the model constructed in this paper has a certain effect.

(1) Background: this paper analyzes the relationship between entrepreneurship and sustainability following the worldwide reference of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework set by the United Nations. Nowadays, these SDGs are the inspiration for many types of entrepreneurship that combine value creation with conservation and social protection. (2) Methods: using the indicators provided by Eurostat in its section called “Sustainable development indicators”, we have developed a dataset of 21 variables applied to the European Union (EU27) for the period 2013–2017. (3) Results: the results hold that these SDGs have favored a climate of change in the European economies towards more responsible behavior on the part of society, institutions, and their business fabric, creating new sustainable entrepreneurship. (4) Conclusions: the promotion of the SDGs has contributed to increasing the rate of entrepreneurial activity in the period 2013–2017.

Prefabricated building is an efficient building mode. Compared with the traditional building mode, the prefabricated building has advantages of less pollution, high construction efficiency, being more labor-saving, and economy, which is in line with China’s sustainable development strategy. This paper proposes a supplier selection evaluation model based on the mechanism equation model (SEM) and intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (IFAHP). Based on a detailed literature review, 300 structured questionnaires were distributed to the relevant enterprises, and an evaluation index system of prefabricated building element suppliers was built. With the fitting and modification process using a structural equation model, and assist of a path factor, an evaluation index system for evaluating the prefabricated building element suppliers was finally obtained. Finally, the intuitionistic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process was used to establish a selection model of prefabricated element suppliers, and the prefabricated element suppliers of Shuangyashan prefabricated construction projects were analyzed as a case study. The results show that the following factors have the most significant impact on supplier selection (from high to low): quality, economy, long-term cooperation, after-sales, and transportation. This study had a comprehensive consideration of the influencing factors existing in the whole selection process and should provide a valuable reference for the sustainable development of prefabricated construction engineering.

In this paper, the indexes that are used to assess the influence of road construction on Inner Mongolia grassland have been proposed based on the environment protection perspective. The Analytic hierarchy process was employed to evaluate the importance of different indexes regarding to influence. These indexes would be used to provide information for decision making about road construction in order to achieve the sustainable development of grassland.

AbstractThe United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are heterogeneous and interdependent, comprising 169 targets and 231 indicators of sustainable development in such diverse areas as health, the environment, and human rights. Existing efforts to map relationships among SDGs are either theoretical investigations of sustainability concepts, or empirical analyses of development indicators and policy simulations. We present an alternative approach, which describes and quantifies the complex network of SDG interdependencies by applying computational methods to policy and scientific documents. Methods of Natural Language Processing are used to measure overlaps in international policy discourse around SDGs, as represented by the corpus of all existing UN progress reports about each goal (N = 85 reports). We then examine if SDG interdependencies emerging from UN discourse are reflected in patterns of integration and collaboration in SDG-related science, by analyzing data on all scientific articles addressing relevant SDGs in the past two decades (N = 779,901 articles). Results identify a strong discursive divide between environmental goals and all other SDGs, and unexpected interdependencies between SDGs in different areas. While UN discourse partially aligns with integration patterns in SDG-related science, important differences are also observed between priorities emerging in UN and global scientific discourse. We discuss implications and insights for scientific research and policy on sustainable development after COVID-19.

This work proposes a material selection decision-making method for multi-material lightweight body driven by performance to achieve that the right materials are used for the correct positions of the automotive body. The internal relationship between performance and mass, cross-sectional shape, wall thickness parameters, and material properties of a thin-walled structure is studied. The lightweight material indices driven by performance are then established. The lightweight material indices and material price are taken as the decision-making criteria for the material selection of automotive body components. A hybrid weighting method integrated with the analytic hierarchy process, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, and quality function deployment is proposed. The difficulty of quantitatively evaluating the performance requirements of different components of the body is solved using the proposed weighting method combined with the numerical analytical results of the component performance under multiple operating conditions of the automotive body. Then, the weight of the decision-making criteria for material selection is calculated. Grey relational analysis is used to make multicriteria decision-making on a variety of candidate materials to select the best material for body components. After the lightweight material selection of the front longitudinal beam of the automotive body, the frontal collision safety performance of the body is effectively improved, and the mass of the front longitudinal beam is reduced by 45%. Material selection result of the front longitudinal beam indicates that the proposed material selection decision-making method can effectively achieve the fast material selection of components in different positions of the body.

Nepal, as a member of the United Nations, is committed to achieve the global initiatives of Sustainable Development Agenda by 2030. Toward translating the commitment into action, Nepal has produced preliminary SDGs Report in 2015, even before the formal adoption of the 2030. Moreover, Voluntary National Review Report, Sustainable Development Goals, Status and Roadmap: 2016-2030, and Sustainable Development Goals 2016-2030 National (Preliminary) Report were developed. Further, Nepal has initiated mainstreaming the 2030 Agenda into national policies and plans. The 14th periodic plan, the national budget, and other sectoral plans have been closely aligned with the SDGs and the approach paper for 15th five-year plan is intended to achieve the SDG. The upcoming 15th periodic plan will basically aim to support the government in achieving all the SDGs by 2030 and help Nepal emerge as a middle-income country by 2030. The indicators comprise of renewable energy for electricity and vehicles, injuries due to disaster (number), greenhouse gases, adaptation plans, trained man power, climate change educations, and climate smart villages and farming are identified as indicators under climate and energy goals. Similarly, under forest goals proportion of forest land, forest under community-based management (% of total dense forest areas), protected area (including forest, in % of total land area), handover of forests to leasehold forest groups (000 hectare), wild tigers (number), rhino (number) etc are included. Likewise, conservation of lakes, wetlands, and ponds (number) and potentially dangerous lakes (%) are included under fresh water goals. However, there was no scientific basis how the indicators were derived for the environmental goals. In this backdrop, a study in identifying site specific, measurable, time bound, relevant and attainable indicators was paramount. Based on the secondary literature review, stakeholder consultation at sub national and local level, the indicators were verified and suggested strategies that help localizing the environmental indicators at sub-national and local level in Nepal. The study was therefore centered on reviewing the environmental indicators and suggest appropriate strategies so that it helps expediting localization of SDG in Nepal.
